For those who have played RBY, what are things that you're glad have been changed since? For example, the lack of running shoes may be quite annoying for those of us who have played newer games. Or say the lack of organisation with your items - no separate pockets for healing items, etc.

Even though I haven't played 1st Gen, I'm glad the type chart greatly improved, and more Pokémon of other types were included. Psychic and Normal were OP, and now we have a patch for that. Also Dragon and Ghost really needed development.

I'm really glad that they fixed the type diversity and gym leader/Elite 4 rosters in the more recent gens. Poison and Water were two of the most common types in R/B/Y, and yet they limited Misty and Koga to using one or two family lines of the types they specialize? And don't get me started on making Agatha a Ghost specialist and Lance a Dragon specialist despite there only being one Ghost line and one Dragon line in R/B/Y, resorting them to using Pokémon not associated with their type specialty.

Can't fault them too much, as they did pave the way to a great series. We all gotta start somewhere, right? But let's see...

- type chart
- running shoes
- item registration

Those are the biggest things that come to my mind, mechanic wise. However! I want to point out one feature that Gen I has that it has downgraded on in every generation after it:

When you receive a gift Pokemon in Gen I games and your party is full, it goes straight to your PC. In later generations, you have to have a free slot to get the Pokemon. Why was this removed?! That's so much more convenient!

Having carrying items not a set limit anymore. Organizing them into categories was a nice touch and then later get rid of the limit all together so you don't have to keep running back to your PC.

Probably can use more responses for the article - rant away!

Absolutely agree with this one. This is so useful! I don't know why it is no longer possible...

Yeah, this is one of the most frustrating aspects for myself having played more of Blue of late. Couple that with a fair few useless TMs (Teleport???)...

Lack of certain typed moves also sucked. Poor Gengar with no Shadow Ball and no Sludge Bomb. Bug types really suffered as well! Pin Missile, Leech Life, Twineedle and String Shot were it. =|

^ But you can teach Teleport to so many random Pokemon like ARCANINE and I'm just sitting here like "well I may have terrible moves as TMs, but at least my dog can transport me to a Pokemon Center."

Like Pinkie said, Gym Leader and Elite Four rosters being fixed in more recent games, and we only had few other cases where they resorted to a certain evolution line due to type scarcity (Phoebe and Glacia in Hoenn, Lance in Johto etc).

Also, the type chart and the critical hit mechanic changes were welcome because they were very screwed back in 1st Gen.

No one ever mentions this. Scrolling through your team. You weren't able to scroll through your party using the d-pad back then! Absolute madness.

As much as I love Generation I, there are a few things that I'm glad were addressed in later games. Among them are:
  • The single-pocketed Item Bag was expanded to have multiple pockets, and now, storage limits have been all but abolished in Generation VI..
  • Later generations no longer require you to save just to switch boxes.
  • The type chart, which in this generation notoriously has Psychic immune to Ghosts (which wouldn't have mattered if that weren't the case since the only Ghost-type line from back then was also part-Poison).
  • Accuracy of all moves being limited in Gen. I to a maximum of 255/256, even those advertised as 100% (except for Swift, which in later generations don't like that it can no longer hit opponents in the middle of a semi-invulnerable move such as Dig or Fly).

I can't seem to find out an official reason for this, since you'd think they would have easily been able to keep this feature for all future generations. My only guess is that it was either too sophisticated or (more likely) bug-ridden to keep for Generation II and later.

Can we just sit down and remember how hard it was to train late game?
I've always challenged the Elite four with lv45-50, it's not a pain, but I'm happy we have more trainers to fight now, also Wrap and such, these were hateful as hell, We can also point the bag thing, it was kinda frustrating.
