What genders do you guys think the starters look like? I recall my friend saying she does not know by there is more male than female starters because most of the starters look feminine. But I disagree! I think plenty of them look male. Anyhow, here's my list (this is just the firs stage for the starters by the way, don't take their evolutions into consideration.)
    Charmander: Male
Bulbasaur: Either. I originally saw bulbasaur as male, but then May has a Bulbasaur and it just seemed so feminine to me.
    Squirtle: Male
    Cyndaquil: Female
    Chikorita: Female
    Totodile: Male
    Torchic: Female
    Treeko: Male
    Mudkip: Male
Chimchar: Either. I can see make and female in chimchar so I don't know which to say.
    Turtwig: Male
    Piplup: Male
Tepig: Female (it's ears remind me of a girl with a ponytail.)
    Snivy: Female
    Oshawott: Male

    Treeko: Male

All starters have a 87.5% of being male, and a 12.5% of being female.

EVEN Chikorita. Which I expected to be the opposite.

  • All the starter Pokemon, minus Chikorita and Snivy, look male to me. The other two look female, despite the fact there are more male starters than female starters in the video games.

  • Never really understood why the chances of having a male starter is higher than having a female one????
    Shouldn't they be 50-50%...
Also, only Chikorita seems like a female to me.

It makes it harder to breed starter pokemon.

  • Charmander: Male.
Bulbasaur: Male. I could never see a Bulbasaur as female, due to the Bulbasaur owned by Ash. May's Bulbasaur made me see the species in new light, but a regular Bulba artwork or in the game never seems female to me.
Squirtle: Male. Again the anime kind of imposed this on me, but from the first time i saw the 1st gen starters I thought they all looked male.
    Cyndaquil: Male.
Chikorita: Female. Every time I see Chikorita, it almost seems like it is supposed to be female in the artwork. Weather this is true or not (based on the female from the Anime) I don't know, but it seems to be the most feminine of the starters.
    Totodile: Male.
Torchic: Both. I used to think May's Torchic was female, finding out it's actually male made me see this Pokemon more as male. It could be either way, but I'd personally prefer a male in-game, so it fits more with the final evolution.
Treeko: Both. The female Treeko in an episode of the anime made a female Treeko seem not so weird to me, thinking it was a masculine Pokemon at the time. The sprites are the same for both genders, but sprite-wise, a male would probably fit
Chimchar: Both. I think more of it as Male, however males a nice female too.
    Turtwig: Male.
    Piplup: Male.
    Tepig: Both. Prefer male.
    Snivy: Male.
    Oshawott: Male.
I plan to have only male starters in my games besides Chikorita, but that's my personal prefrence. :p

I always reset until I get female, it's just a habit I started when I started playing FireRed I think.

Totodile and Mudkip are the only Pokemon that I see as more masculine, so I usually keep them as males when I use them. Of course, you could argue that more the Torchic line, but eh. I think it's kinda cool to use a female starter because of how infrequent they appear, and most of the time, my teams always used to be homogeneously male.

  • Bulbasaur- male
    Charmander- male
    Squirtle- male
    Chikorita- female
    Cyndaquil- cute
    Tododile- male
    Treeko- male
    Torchic- female
    Mudkip- male
    Turtwig- male
    Chimchar- male
    Piplup- 2% male, 98% adorable
    Snivy- either
    Tepig- male
Oshawott- somewhat masculine, hard to tell because it's so darn cute.

So that's my take on the subject. This is just if I had to pick something. They could really all be either.

Cyndaquil: Both. It seems like a tomboy.
    Totodile: Male

    Torchic: Female
Mudkip: Both. It's hard to tell >.<
    Turtwig: Male
    Chimchar: Male
    Piplup: Female
Snivy: Both. I can see Snivy in two different ways. One is the gentleman with the top hat, the other is the fancy, fashionable female one.
Tepig: Female, because of the Pokemon Black and White manga.
Oshawott: Both yet again. So cute with its big nose and freckles! :knockedou

  • Hmm, aside from Piplup and Chikorita all the starters seem masculine, appearance wise. Chikorita always appeared to be female, I couldn't imagine a male one for some reason along with Piplup.

  • Personally, I can see all of them as either gender. So I'll just do my best to decide which gender the design seems more fitted to.
