  • IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN
    a positively electrifying pokémon journey

    xoA8n87.gif

HOENN IS A REGION IN CHAOS

After the raging storm caused by the vicious struggle between the Sea Basin pokémon, Kyogre, and the Continent pokémon, Groudon ended, quelled by Rayquaza, the Sky High pokémon, Hoenn was left in ruins: Littleroot was levelled, Oldale was obliterated, Petalburg was in pieces, and so much more. With the gyms smashed (they had been targeted by the team Aqua and Magma grunts, in order to prevent the Leaders and their trainers from meddling with their plans), the Pokémon League could no longer function in the Hoenn region. Indeed, even the starter pokémon were withheld for beginning trainers.

Indeed, for more than ten years, the Hoenn region ceased to be a viable place for pokémon training - almost no new trainers came in, and almost all of the existing ones went elsewhere (those who weren't helping with the rebuilding of the region, anyway). indeed, the wild places of the region, once kept in order by roaming trainers, became wild and untamed.

Even after the rebuilding - even after new gyms were built, and stocked with leaders and trainers, even after the towns were revitalised, the Hoenn region had trouble attracting the attentions of trainers again: it had been a long time since anybody had been there for any kind of pokémon battling purposes. Not many people returned, even after the reinstatement of the Pokémon League.

So, with the entire region suffering with the lack of trainers (the pokémon battling scene, after all, had been one of its biggest money-gathering ventures), a new model for the league was proposed, by one Arcturius Wynter, a wealthy businessman, who just so happened to be the eighth Gym Leader of Hoenn.

His business model was... Different, that was sure - Instead of just any trainers showing up to challenge the league, a batch of trainers was found, and they'd be accompanied in a televised journey, to collect all of the badges of Hoenn.

Of course, the battles were somewhat spiced up for the audience - Shock collars and special rules certainly made sure of that.

THE CENTER OF A WORLDWIDE PLOT

Now, where does this leave you? Well, you are a trainer, perhaps hailing from Hoenn, or perhaps someplace else - You entered a lottery drawing, or won some kind of competition, or you volunteered, and received a letter informing you of your acceptance into the new Hoenn League. Said letter contained very few details, but did give you a date and a time - It provided no information on what that entailed: simply a stock congratulations, a date, and a time.

And when that time rolled around? They took you from wherever you were, and got you properly acquainted with both the other trainers, your own personal set of shock collars and bracers, and the vague, but terrifying punishments that await, should you lose in this competition.

The risks of the game are great, that much is certain, but the rewards? Well, rumours have it that if you win all eight Hoenn League badges, you're granted audience with a mythical pokémon...

AND THE BACKDROP FOR A WONDERFUL ADVENTURE

So, this is one of those journey roleplay things - the basic plot is that you'll travel through Hoenn, and try to defeat all eight gym leaders. Of course, this isn't just any run-of-the-mill journey RP - in this one, your characters have all been kidnapped, collared, and forced to participate in a reality TV show documenting their journey - and if they lose a battle, a grisly death awaits.

But let's not get bogged down in all the doom and gloom! The good news is that if you can survive all the way to the end, you'll be awarded a wonderful prize! Some people even say that you'll get to see, and even try to catch, a mythical pokémon!

The way who lives and who dies is quite simple: it's done via a point system - at the start of each Gym, you get rolled up a base digit (kept secret, of course), and everyone can vote (publicly) to add 1 point from another player, and subtract 1 point from another player, although you cannot vote for yourself. Additional points are awarded for pokémon defeated in battle, and such other things. The character with the lowest point total after the Gym Leader is defeated is dragged off to be executed.

At the end of the thread, the executions will be posted up for everybody to see.

After the Gym is defeated, everybody who survived will be sent off to the next area, to prepare for the next Gym. You can't backtrack to areas that you've already been to after defeating that area's gym. In addition, when there is a choice of where to go, everybody must agree on doing one thing: the camera crew can't film in two places at once, after all (and we're too cheap to hire more camera crews).

There are no real restrictions on characters, but you should try to appreciate what you're getting them into.

In addition, you should note that IC Actions = IC Consequences, including death outside of gym challenges. I won't stop your characters from trying to escape their situation, or challenge the system, but I'm not going to take it easy on them, either.

    A FEW FORMALITIES

    • All PC rules and guidelines apply
    • Your characters are likely to die in this roleplay - seven out of eight of them will, in fact. If and when this occurs, you may either bow out gracefully, or take on a minor character (a trainer, shop-owner, etc) - I'd like to know what you want to do, though, so shoot me a message if you want to continue after your character is out of the runnings.
    • If it isn't in your inventory, you don't have it.
    • You can have up to three pokémon to start - you may have any (not fully evolved) pokémon you like, except legendaries.
    • Pokemon have access to any move they can learn (except by TM/HM). However, you can only use four moves per Gym. You may change one move after each Gym.
    • Pokemon have access to all abilities, hidden or otherwise, that their species has access to. You may activate one ability per battle.
    • Pokémon are not defeated when they faint - Pokémon are defeated when they die.
    • This roleplay is rated M (Violence, Gore, etc)

  • Places, gentlemen! That is to say, I'm definitely interested, I say as if I've never seen this before.

I'll likely use a character from Orre, should that be okay.

  • Name: Alexandria Dragic
Appearance: Alex gives off some eerie vibes. Her height of 5'7" isn't too intimidating, but she has inky black hair that covers one of her eyes contrasted by her pale skin (which she expects to gain quite a bit of color over the course of the journey), and contact lenses that make her previously-brown eyes red. Her clothing consists of a black tank top (she's not used to the warmth of the Hoenn region after living in the cold for all her life), dark gray cargo pants, and a dark red hoodie tied around her waist.

Personality: Alexandria's personality, when coupled with her appearance, can be described as anything ranging from "creepy" to "really ****ing creepy." She almost always appears cool, collected, and calculating, as if she were treating life like a game of chess. She usually speaks in an icy-cold voice, but it quickly gets sharper as her voice is raised.

In battle, she can be particularly vicious, not appearing to give a damn what happens to the opposing trainer or Pokémon at her hand. She gets enthusiastic, too, loving the prospect of beating the crap out of another Pokémon to an almost scary degree.

However, she can't stand to be in a crowded or noisy place, and will try her best to get out of any situation involving one.

Of course, this is all a played-up version of her personality for television; off-camera, her regular personality is like this but a lot more subtle and more normal. This is just for fun, as she wants to see how exaggerated she can make herself and have people believe her.

History: Born and raised in Snowpoint City in the Sinnoh region, Alexandria is the only child of an upper-middle-class family. Her father spent his time at a research station at the northern cape of the region, and as Alex grew older, her mother found more "important" things to do than take care of her (i.e. trying to salvage her social life from before she had a child and generally convince herself that she was younger). Thus, as a teenager, she had a lot of time to herself, and she used that time to simply shut herself in. Shortly afterwards, the internet became her main source of social interaction and she became extremely introverted in person. She did try Pokémon training at one point recently - and her trainer ID hasn't yet expired - but she stayed local, never leaving her hometown.

  • Name: Elias Akurus
    Gender: M
Appearance: Elias is a rather short and unintimidating type - only barely topping five feet tall, whilst his spiked black hair and wide brown eyes only aid his stature in creating a boyish look. He is usually wearing the traditional Orre style - simple, but practical rags that offer protection from the region's desert heat and sand.
Personality: Elias comes forth as a very charming and polite kid, even a friendly person to be around, if a bit beyond his years - but it all hides his scheming and conniving real self. Elias has been taught from an early age, that if he sees something he would like, he has to reach out and seize it by any necessary means and that is exactly what he will do. He never showed any regard for what little law Orre tried to lay down, nor did he concern for who he hurt to get at what he wanted.
History: Elias was not treated to the most blessed starts of life: A father who abandoned his mother before he was born and said mother dying from a complication in childbirth, Elias was without parents from the very start of his life - dangerous enough anywhere but doubly so in Orre, although as fortune would have it, he was taken in by another couple willing to take him. Unlike many in this kind of situation, Elias came to love and respect his new foster parents, doting over them as much as they did him. However, he did not know the truth about them until he was twelve.

His foster parents tried to protect him from how they earned their living, but it was impossible to keep Elias from the truth forever - they were professional Snaggers. Using blueprints stolen from Team Snagem before the organisation crumbled, they produced their own Snag Machines and were stealing pokémon to order - many will pay top pokédollar for a perfect specimen of a mon rather than the grot that can be collected from the wild.

Against his parents expectations, Elias did not reject this career of theirs, instead embracing it with both arms. He almost demanded that they produce him his own Snag Machine - as he had his own pokémon, his Poochyena and his Kirlia, he could join them straight away, taking to it like a Golduck to water. Happily snagging for the last two years, Elias built himself a reputation as a reliable Snagger who could capture anything to order - for the right price, but something had his attention, a quarry that he wouldn't often find a chance to challenge.

There were lotteries around for entrance to the reimagined and... different Hoenn League. Normally, he'd dismiss such a challenge as pointless chest-thumping for idiots with egos larger than their brains, but there were rumors floating around that anyone who could be the survivor of their group would meet a mystical pokémon in the flesh. Elias entered and on return within a couple days came an invitation. He turned up at the allocated meeting point; Pyrite Town square, unfazed by the challenge before him - this was where the thugs that came to kidnap him grabbed him, in broad daylight in the middle of town, but that's Pyrite for you. He struggled hard against his kidnappers, although he eventually lost and during the scuffle his Snag Machine was damaged - broken beyond any hope of repair without parts from Orre.

  • Name: Damian Walker

    Gender: Male

Appearance: Damian has a typical teenage stature, albeit a bit on the skinnier side. His height is around five feet, five inches. His arms and legs, however, are relatively long compared to his upper body. He's a bit on the skinny side, but he's not in poor shape. Damian's straight hair is dark brown that shines very brightly in the light. He doesn't keep it in any distinct hairstyle; some would describe it as disheveled. His eyes are solid green, but always appear to be relaxed. The rest of his facial features are relatively normal.

Damian usually wears relaxed clothes: casual jeans/dark-colored pants and a blank white T-shirt with an unbuttoned button-down shirt over it.

Personality: Damian's close friends would describe Damian as a fairly open person who is easy to talk to. That being said, he doesn't have many close friends, and is generally described by other people as introverted.

In reality, Damian is a very astute observer of everything. He takes note of how people dress, talk, walk, and act. However, he doesn't understand "other people" as well as he understands his friends. He uses his observations to analyze people and formulate ideas of who they are. However, he's not always right about these observations. Often times when his analyses of other people are wrong, he ends up being confused and criticizes himself. Given this, he dislikes ambiguity wherever he may find it. Damian is just as aware of his surroundings. He pays close attention to scientific observations and discoveries, which, to him, are objective and factual descriptions of that which surrounds him.

History: Damian's parents are native to Hoenn; however, they moved to the Sinnoh region before Damian's mother became pregnant with him. Damian was born and grew up in Sunyshore City. As a young child, Damian was deeply fascinated with Pokemon, and studied them whenever he could. He kept a small journal of his juvenile observations, but he misplaced it years ago. When he was eight years old, Damian's father bought him a Poke Ball to catch his first Pokemon. With his father close behind, he ventured out into the wild surrounding Sunyshore City. He laid eyes on a friendly-looking Shinx, a Pokemon that he had observed a few times. Not seeing the Shinx belonging to a nearby pride, he carefully approached it and offered it to enter the Poke Ball. The Poke Ball failed to catch the Shinx, but it followed him home, where it became a sort of "personal pet" for Damian. (He would later formally catch it.) He named the Shinx "Volta."

Damian became interested in a lottery to enter the new and "improved" Hoenn League. Interested in exploring his roots, Damian entered the lottery and prepared by catching two more Pokemon with Volta: a Trapinch named "Myrm" and a Bronzor named "Mugen."

After winning the lottery, Damian did some digging around his house for stuff that he could bring with him, and found his old journal. He thought to himself that he probably wouldn't need it, but decided to take it anyway to remind him of home.

  • Now here's an interesting concept. Morbid and creepifying, but interesting!

    Name: Percival "Percy" Princeton
    Gender: Male

Appearance: In his mid-twenties, Percy keeps himself fit. At 5' 3", he may be a little short, but he's nimble and wiry. He keeps his red hair cut short, to keep it from getting too crazy, as it is naturally spiky. His eyes are dark sapphire blue, with slight wrinkles at the corners. His square jaw is kept clean shaven, save for a small soul patch, and he usually has a smile on his face. His clothes are practical and somewhat plain: black slacks, black sandals, and a brown coat. He does have some color, wearing blue shirts, a blue ball cap, and a red scarf tied around his waist.

Personality: Percy is constantly on the move, never able to stay still for very long. He's not overly hyper, but has near constant energy. He is friendly and talkative, yet rarely shares much about himself. He's learned to just go with the flow, and not get caught up in the details. He loves to travel and try new things, but has trouble settling down and connecting with people. He thinks that he's cool and charming, and tries to get others to lighten up and enjoy themselves. And though he starts things mainly on whim, he is very stubborn and dedicated, refusing to quit once he sets his mind on something.

History: Originally from Eterna City, Percy's father was a simple shopkeeper, managing the local herb shop. His mother was a D-list Contest star from Hearthome, and often took her family back there to watch her compete. As such, he got to learn a lot about Pokemon, and developed a flair for the dramatic. He one day found a Great Ball lying around in the road, and decided he should catch a Pokemon of his own. He waited until he was back home, wanting a Pokemon that was comfortable in his home area. Using food as bait, he attracted the attention of a Ponyta, a rare and elusive Fire-type. He got lucky with his Great Ball, and was soon the only boy in town with a pony. The other kids mocked him mercilessly, but he learned to ignore the haters.

Since he was in his early teens and had a Pokemon of his own, he decided to go out and tour the country, but held off on actually challenging the Gyms. He tried dividing his training between Contests and Battles, but he was only mediocre at both. After stowing away on a ship headed to Johto, he discovered the Pokethlon, and became moderately well known as an athlete. He eventually returned home, dividing his time between mundane life, and training Ponyta in all three fields of battle, contests, and athleticism.

He had never really thought about Hoenn all that much, until he found a strange egg that hatched into a Seviper. He did a little research on its home country, and entered the Hoenn League lottery as a joke, surprised when he actually won. Since Seviper had no interest in contests or sports, he figured at least the Gym challenge would help it relieve some aggression.

    Inventory:
    ~Poke Ball x 3
    ~Energy Powder x 5
    ~Cooking Pot
    ~1500 Poke Dollars

    Pokémon:
Morgan - Ponyta - Female - Hasty - Flame Wheel, Stomp, Double Kick, Flame Charge
Dagger - Seviper - Male - Serious - Bite, Poison Tail, Screech, Venoshock

  • @Cabbage - Okay, well everything you have so far seems fine - I look forward to seeing the rest! :) Just noticed that you have four Pokémon - the maximum you can start out with is three. Also, Vibrava cannot learn Dragon Claw, and Dig and Fly are TM/HM moves. Marshtomp's Dig is also a TM/HM move.

    @Raiu638 -

@Paskalso - Nothing wrong with what you have so far, it'll be good to see the rest of it when it's up.

    @Godzil -
    mBUuqmt.png

Ponyta's Sunny Day and Solar Beam are TM/HM taught moves, as is Seviper's Dig. Also, Seviper cannot learn Ice Fang.

  • Sorry about that. In my defense, you never said no TM's. I have no excuse for Ice Fang other than spotty memory. My bad.

Can I just say those "Accepted/Pending" stamps look awesome?

  • @Paskalso - There's technically no limit on ages here. That said, if you want a rule of thumb, anything above ten is good.

@Godzil - actually, yes I did. Fifth rule down.

And thank you - I tend to have this issue where people are like 'did you accept me?', so I made these. Fixes the problem rather well.

Anyway, since you've fixed the moves of your pokémon, there's nothing wrong with your character,

Were we supposed to list our age at any point? I guess that would fall under appearance, but that's sort of a stretch... let's just say that Damian Walker is 17.

  • It's not really necessary to list ages and things like that - If you really want to, you can, but unless their age is particularly important to the character, it's usually something you can go without listing. Their general appearance and demeanour tends to hint at age, anyhow.
