    The (Winter) Scenario Design Contest

Welcome to the Scenario Design Contest! Allow me to set the set the scenario for you:

The next generation Pokémon game is being developed and the developers really want to include a wintry area. But for some reason they just cannot think of what to do! So, they have decided to turn to the fans for help. They want their fans to submit ideas for small events that could fit into this new wintry area. It could be anything, as long as you provide the Who, What, Where and Why of the event.

    The Criteria

What: This is where you describe just what is going to happen. Provide a general sequence of events.
Where: This is where you describe the location(s) of the event. Does it take place in a frozen forest? A cave? Santa's workshop?
Who: This is where you describe some key characters. Are there other people involved in the event. Maybe the local Gym Leader? Santa himself?
Why: This is where you justify and/or explain your event. Try and explain how it could either a) fit into a larger story or b) be a suitable sidequest. Explain why the player would bother getting involved.

    Submission and Judging

If you're interested in participating, you don't need to sign up for the event. Just drop your submission here before the end of the 25 Days. Although letting me know you'll be submitting something never hurts. ;)

A submission does not need to be overly complex or in-depth! Bigger does not necessarily mean better. The only things you need to submit are written descriptions of the four criteria above. However, supplementing your entry with art and further creative writing is highly encouraged. Basically, do as much (or as little) as you want!

Entries will be judged based on 1) creativity 2) their viability for the game 3) how well they stick to the theme of "winter" and 4) how well they detail the criteria. All the judging will be done by myself, although I may try to recruit another judge depending on the number of submissions.

    Example Submission

    Spoiler:

    Prizes

Everyone that submits an entry will get a nifty participation emblem. The winner will get their own unique emblem in addition to the participation emblem. If there are enough entries I will hand out second and third place emblems as well.

  • What:
In a peaceful little place in the mountains known as Nevaria Town, the people have a tradition known as the Nevaria festival. Each year, the townspeople work hard decorating the big evergreen tree in the middle of the town square, adorning it with lights, ornaments, and other nifty little trinkets in preparation for the festival. But the most important part of the festival is the presents. Througout the season they all leave presents under the tree for one another and, on the day of the festival, they all gather around the tree and open their presents. The festival has been part of Nevaria Town's tradition for centuries, but the past few years, the townspeople have noticed presents here and there missing from under the tree. It's been a problem for a while, but this year was the worst yet: the people of Nevaria Town woke up on the day of the festival only to find that all of the presents and decorations are missing! It turns out to have been the work of Hoopa all along, who's been opening up portals and stashing all the presents in a secret hiding place only he knows the location of. The player arrives in town on the day of the festival, and volunteers to help find the culprit after the mayor tells him/her the situation.

    Where:

The primary setting is Nevaria Town, a village nestled in the mountains, reachable only by a ferry. It's a small, tight-knit little community of people who all treat each other like family. The Nevaria festival is the most beloved time of the year for them and it's a source of strength for their community. The other major location is Hoopa's Hideout, a hidden grotto deep in the mountains which the player must trek to in order to retrieve the presents. It is here where the player will encounter Hoopa and will have the opportunity to capture it.

    Who:
The only people involved in the scenario are the player, the townspeople, the town mayor, who explains the situation
once the player arrives in town, and of course Hoopa.

    Why:
This could be a Christmas event that's distributed during the holiday season. The mystery gift is a ticket that takes the player to the town. This will primarily serve as a way to capture Hoopa. Once the player finishes the scenario and captures Hoopa, Nevaria Town can't be revisited, except by obtaining another ticket through another distribution event.

  • What: Lapras Racing!

Vatnier has become a sanctuary to Lapras, where under the resident's protection they have swelled in numbers and have developed strong relationships with each other. What originally started as friendly competition whilst transporting people across the lakes developed into a sport, which today is famous region-wide!

Lapras Racing is similar to Rhyhorn Racing but carried out over water and ice and featuring tricks. Vatnier has numerous vast lakes, which depending on location and/or time of year are completely or partly frozen over. Due to it's uniqueness the sport soon became a tourist attraction and as it's popularity grew began spreading across the region, made possible by Lapras using Freeze to freeze over the lakes when needed.

Freeze replaces the move Freeze-Dry and has become an HM. When used outside of battle it freezes water or other objects and will be needed throughout the game. It can be obtained by winning a local Lapras Racing Meet and used once the player has defeated the local gym.

Early in the game the player will arrive here. Upon learning of Lapras Racing and displaying an affinity with Lapras the player will be gifted a Shiny Lapras which knows the move so they can compete in the upcoming Meet.

Much later in the game, and only after defeating the Elite Four and Champion, if the player has won enough Lapras Races elsewhere the player will be invited to return to the area to compete in a Champion of Champions race and celebrations. Once here the player will learn of a mysterious new Pokémon and have the option to set out on a quest (that utilises Freeze) to find and catch Volcanion!

Where: Vatnier (from Vatna, Icelandic for water and glacier) is a city with a glacial feel to it, surrounded by snow capped mountains. There are various settlements separated by numerous and vast lakes. It is rumoured that some distance away, under the ice cap, lies a volcano of legend.

Who: Ivan, the local Gym Leader who specialises in Ice-types and is also the current Regional Lapras Racing Leauge Champion, locals, Lapras, Volcanion.

Why: Introduces players to the new Field Move, Freeze. Sets up the Lapras Racing Championship (similar and in addition to Contests etc.). The player can obtain a Shiny Lapras who knows Freeze. The player can learn about and catch Volcanion.

What: (all of the directions given are just arbitrary to avoid confusion)
During your journey, walking eastwards you come across what seems to be a barren wasteland; outside weather seems to be in a constant state of blizzards, and the only place of relevance seems to be a small lodge, known as Shiverbud Lodge. An inconspicuous cluster of small, icy-blue rocks to the north, with frozen-still windmills visible in the distant background. However there is another path further eastwards, also blocked by icy-blue rocks. Upon entering the lodge, you come across an old couple; an old lady who offers to heal your Pokemon when prompted, and an old man who reminisces of the times when the power plant to the south was functioning. It had always been cold but one day, the blizzards never stopped. He claims that he wishes a strong trainer like [insert Champion name] had free time to investigate and solve their problem, and asks you if you could help him when you become as strong as the Champion. The old man then bestows upon you HM06 Rock Smash as help on your journey. Smashing the rocks to the north takes you to the gate of the Power Plant, which is surrounded by frosted, immobile windmills, with some snow-covered grass visible within the gates clearing a path towards the entrance. However the gate is locked and so the player is currently unable to enter and must continue upon their journey eastwards.

Upon defeating the Champion and returning to the Shiverbud Lodge, the old man will ask again for your help as he gives you a Power Plant Key. The grassy outskirts of the Power Plant contain relatively strong, high-leveled Pokemon such as Piloswine, Cryogonal, and (rarely) Abomasnow. As soon as you enter, you will hear the cry of a certain Pokemon. The Power Plant appears to be similar to the one from RBY and RSE; a high-tech maze-like structure, however it seems like snow and frost have surrounded the building. Travelling through the Power Plant you may encounter various powerful Pokemon such as Electrode disguised as a Pokeball, Klinklang, Vanilluxe and on rare occasions, Rotom. Near the entrance of the plant you will be able to find a refrigerator and various other appliances which can be utilised to change Rotom's form, and hidden within the maze will be the TM for Frost Breath. Far north at the wall of the plant, there will be a wide door with a chilled breeze flowing through. Upon entering it you find yourself outside, and infront of you on a large rock, sits Articuno! This is your chance to battle Articuno and you can battle it whenever you're ready. After defeating or capturing Articuno, it will calm down and the strong blizzards will weaken, allowing the windmills to break free from the ice holding them in place. If Articuno is defeated, it will return to the same place in a week to be rechallenged, however the windmills will still function as it has been calmed down. When you decide to return to the old man, he will thank you wholeheartedly and reward you with an Abomasite.
Where: It takes place at a Power Plant near Shiverbud Lodge, within an area full of chilling blizzards. The lodge is the only building within the snowy wonderland, as it is very difficult for humans to stay there, but there is a large abandoned Power Plant to the north which you may get up and running!
Who: The characters involved are the player character, an old married couple living in the lodge, powerful wild Pokemon, and the legendary Articuno.
Why: It would be a suitable sidequest as it can be the primary method of obtaining Articuno as part of completing the Pokedex, as well as being a way to obtain Abomasite and a TM. Think of it like the Zapdos Power Plant in gen I, but for Articuno instead!

    What:
Climbing the northern mountains of the region, the player finds themselves trapped in a snow storm. The higher they get, the worse it becomes. Right when the storm gets unbearable, a mansion appears and even better: there seems to be someone living there, as light is clearly shining through the windows. As the player knocks on the front door, he's greeted by the mansion's owner who allows them to enter.

After that, the player is directed towards the living room where they find a big tree in the middle of the room and under it a lot of presents. Furthermore there are a couple other people who all seem to be guests as well. After talking to them all, the lights go out, suddenly. As if the sudden loss of electricity wasn't enough: there appears to be weird noises coming out from the kitchen.

Investigating the cause of all of this, the player finds themselves in the kitchen, looking for clues. As they look around, some of the machines start shaking randomly and as the player apporaches them, they turn out to be Pokemon. Though, they instantly flee when approached. After some chasing from machine to machine, the player manages to corner it and engages in a battle, showing that it was a Rotom the whole time.

After the battle, the electricity returns, but as the player returns to the living room, all the presents are gone. Turns out, some of the guests where members of the evil organization of the region and they are now trying to make a statement by stealing all the presents. However, since the storm is still strong, they are trapped somewhere in the mansion, so the player now has to start looking for them.
Whenever one of them has been found, they start a battle and after their defeat, they return some of the stolen presents and give a little hint towards where the others might be hiding. Defeating all of them gets all the presents back and as they're returned to the owner of the mansion, the player is allowed to choose one of three presents for themselves:
    - one is a Shiny Stone
    - the second one a Dusk Stone and
    - the last one a Dawn Stone

After that the storm stops, allowing the player to continue their journey.

    Where:
In the northern mountains of the region; in order to get to the seventh gym, the player has to cross the mountains first which he needs Rock Climb for, a move he is allowed to use after obtaining the sixth badge.
The mansion itself lies pretty much in the middle of the way, though the second part is easier as it's just full of slopes that can be jumped down. Unfortunately when the storm is still around, the path is blocked by all the snow and the strong winds.

    Who:
Besides the player, there's also the owner of the mansion, who allows entrance, as well as asks the player to check out, what's producing the noises in the kitchen. He's also the one who tells them that the presents got stolen.
The guests, with some of them being Grunts who steal the presents when everybody is distracted; after successfully stealing the presents, they hide in random places in the mansion, hoping to stay hidden until the storm stops.

    Why:
This event is all about mystery, which fits with both Pokemon and Christmas/Winter season pretty well. It also serves as a distraction as it lies directly between the sixth and seventh gym town, giving the player a little bit of something, before they get back to continuing the badge quest. At the same time, it allows the evil organization another opportunity to show what they're all about.
It's pretty much a combination of The Grinch and those old crime movies where a detective is trapped inside a mansion alongside other people and who tries to uncover the murderer that's trying to kill all the guests.

Furthermore it gives the player access to Rotom and an opportunity to get one of the rarer Evolutionary stones.

Alright! I've finished judging! Sorry for the delay.

I'll just share some of my thoughts for each entry. They're all so well written that it was hard to pick a winner.
    Spoiler:

And now for the winner. I thought really hard about this one, and in the end it came down to which one I could most easily see being put in the imaginary game. So...

    Congratulations Sukyandaru!

Sukyandaru's event was simple enough (and not in a bad way) that I could easily see a team of developers being willing to implement it. The fact that the player has multiple reasons to visit the location (first Rock Smash and then later Articuno) means the location would be relevant throughout the game without being intrusive.

Thanks to all the participants for taking part, and I'll be sure to get the emblems sent out as soon as possible! :)

That evil team part bothered me as well, but I couldn't really come up with something until the event had already ended. Oh well, was a fun contest and I hope it returns someday.

    Gratz Sukyandaru! :)
