What do you play?

I did plan on naming this "why do you play", but even though that would've been less vague I do feel like this fits the bill more.

Lately, I've been doing a lot of thinking. I, personally, want to become a video game developer, but I've been looking at various demographics and particularly the numbers on the games that get the most consistent play. Let me tell you, these numbers aren't exactly inspiring, especially when I talk to the people who play these games most and their tastes are mostly…Well, they're clearly more leaning towards easily digestible experiences, the ones that don't take too much investment into generally multiplayer.

I knew this at a time, and I'm actually quite surprised that this shocks me if only because I've apparently become so jaded by the more niche markets becoming more popular, largely thanks to things like game journalism and Let's Players in their appeal to that same general market.

So, with that whole preface out of way, I'm interested in where you stand. What type of games do you play? What type of gamer what do you think you are, in whatever sense you would like to describe it.

I thought this was a genre I started liking because so many survival games have been cropping up on Steam in the past few years, but looking back, I've been enjoying these games for over a decade - Lost in Blue was one of my favorite games at the time of its release, and probably the first survival/crafting/sandbox-y type games I've ever played. I'm not sure if it's a particularly niche market anymore considering how well survival games do and how often they pop up on the market these days as people try to create the next Don't Starve - it's definitely becoming more and more popular.

But more broadly speaking, I think the main theme of what I like most is "building" - anything that allows me to start with nothing and build up to something huge, whether it's my personal fortress/sanctuary in survival/simulation games (ie. Minecraft, Stardew, Don't Starve), or an empire/city/world in city-builders like Tropico, Cities: Skylines, Banished, etc.

I'm a little bit strange when it comes to gaming. I'm not what you'd consider to be a very deeply focused gamer. Grinding and being stalled by difficult content is kind of my kryptonite; and it's one of the very first reasons I consider when deciding whether or not to finish a game or if it's become too tedious. So at heart; I very much am a casual gamer.

That being said; there are numerous other factors that matter to me; which contribute to how long I'll play a game and what I'll put up with. Genres I like are usually RPG styled, because they are the longest lasting with the most variable content. However action-y games can be fun if the game isn't too ridiculously fast paced to be fun for me.

I too tend to go for the RPGs as those tend to have content that will last me for a while. Sometimes there's the old school grind, but I don't mind too much and usually I would multitask whenever I'm doing some grinding. I think because of my writing background, RPGs tend to have decent stories that I would enjoy.

I play a bit of everything tbh. I always prefer story driven games. In terms of genres, I think I learn towards action/adventure/platform games more, however. But I'll very much enjoy puzzle games, FPS's, sports games, (occasionally) racing games, RPGs, etc. Naughty Dog games are some of my favorite games ever. Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us are good examples of the kinds of games I tend to like.

I play games that make me feel satisfied when I complete them. I want to finish a game and sit back and go "Wow. That was a journey." Typically this feeling comes from story driven games, so I'm more attracted to games that I know have a good story. Like a good movie or book, a good video game story can be so magical.

I can easily settle down this thread by simply stating out the most basic of stuff such as the genres: First Person Shooters, 3rd Person Hack and Slash, 3rd Person shooters, Action RPGs, Real Time Strategy (RTS), Jap or Eastern RPG (JRPGs), Ace Combat (i forgot their genre), Adventure, platforming, and possibly Extreme sports games the likes of Tony Hawk..

But if I wanted to be a little more descriptive of the essence of this thread, here's my thing:

I love playing video games that pretty much feature as much mindlessly fun and frantic action. I've mentioned it possibly a billion of times that I grew up in a time where we simply played video games for the fun, fizzes, and unapologetic f**cks given. Many old school First Person shooters fit the mold nicely, as well as other titles that I have mentioned in the previous paragraph.

My tastes in video games simply come from the grand and good ole days were all we cared about was us just having mindlessly great amounts of fun and approaching such of these things with an open mind. In our time, we were less political and far more politically incorrect. We played video games without sticking a "Triggerplug" in our own dungholes because we cared so much about the gameplay and how it entertained us. We enjoyed video games in such a way that our kid selves did, and I still do, and will forever do so, and will pioneer to do so. Some people may judge me for being such a "kid" or being such a "shallow c*nt" who loves Doom and its ilk and would ask me "hey xin, what if you could at least talk to the demons!?" "Omg that's all we do? That's so childish gaming needs to grow up!". Well sunny jim, people who do not understand gaming are the ones who need to grow up, that includes their own set of genitals that they have failed to plant within their bodies (and yes I totally did borrow that from Totalbiscuit!). I'm not the kind if person who watches movies were people kiss in the rain and sh*t, then talk about the now more opinionated and politically driven world. I'm still the kind of person who would rather blow sh*t up, be a GODDAMN HERO, have loads of fun, laughs, and even manly smiles, appreciate the in-game mechanics of the video games that i play, and approach things with a very open mind.

Maybe, given a few years time, maybe around in my 30s.. I would probably be working with a studio or even be developing my own video game for everyone to enjoy. I would gladly and humbly stick to my principles and tastes (Mindless fun, franticness, blood and guts are just the loving icing and toppings), and I would gladly help maintain the role of video games as mediums of entertaining outlets for people to enjoy, not giving a damn about politics and trivial non-sense.

i like playing rpg's, jrpg's, and first person shooters.

Now I play PES 2017 and looks really coool!

Mostly J-RPGs like every other nerd here, but also open-world games like Assassin's Creed. The only first-person shooter I consistently played was Halo, now Battlefield.

I enjoy JRPGs, WRPGs, Platformers (2D and 3D), Metroidvanias and the occasional point-and-click adventure game.

Whatever interests me. I couldn't really find a consistent pattern in the kind of games I enjoy if I tried. I love games that encourage exploration and a variety of options on how to approach different tasks, but then I also find a lot of games that let me do this and... don't enjoy them. I love Western RPGs, but couldn't get into Skryim, Morrowind, or Fallout 3. (Even though I love New Vegas.) I love JRPGs, but I can't get into so many games in the genre that I legitimately can't think of an example off the top of my head. I find a lot of games that I should, for all intents and purposes, like but end up dropping like a rock.

So yeah I don't know what the heck kind of gamer I am. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most of all I like to play RPG and Strategy. I'm also a big Dota fan and time from time I watch World Cyber Games Dota tournaments. The last two months I played Pokemon Go, and until I go to University I play on-line poker on en.casinoz.me and Best Fieds on my smartphone.
Games change :)

All I play is Pokemon, probably because I want to literally catch them all.

Hm. I like a whole mass of genres, but it's easiest to say what I don't play to narrow it down further. I don't really play sports games, simulators i.e. a real job. Survival simulations are more stimulating than a Forklift simulator for example and Farming Simulators leave me scratching my head. I also don't do dance or sing games anymore.

I do like driving simulators Gran Turismo > Forza

RPGs, 3RD person shooters, Strategy games, Metroid-Vainia games. Side scrollers are kind of a favorite though.
