Because they would rather spend the holidays with someone they want there. It sucks when someone can't make it, especially in the time of the year when families are supposed to be together.

I guess it depends on peoples relationships with their families.

As much as I rant about mine, I still love my family and since everyone is carefree on Christmas, my family just likes to enjoy the only day they get to spend together.

It could be because people lose family members in between Christmas', and because it's such a family-centered holiday it can bring up bad memories. I know my Christmas is going to be odd without my grandfather.
 
I must be lucky, I never considered Christmas anything else than a break like Spring or Summer break, but with presents and new year ^^;
