Let's see...
The folks at Smogon take themselves waaay too seriously. Egos are entirely too inflated. You're not all that for making decisions for some rules nobody has to follow in a Pokémon game lol
Serebii? I spent a little time there but didn't connect well with it. I hear the memberbase is about as bad as BMGf's staff, speaking of which...
I originally joined Bulbagarden in 2009. I spent time there talking mainly in the AdvanceShipping thread and the May Club, and when threaded clubs were moved to social groups I started VMing more. The staff there are a bunch of jackoffs and as a collective more than anything the AdvanceShippers there dealt with rising tensions before we all decided to leave for our own group's sake. I got banned for a day which started a cascade of a few other bans because seriously I kid you not the shipping moderator on staff lost it because I corrected her on some shipping folk trivia piece, like whether Ash and May had some sort of idek. But I was manually banned by an admin, without an infraction to trigger it or anything like that lol, and I came back and that was when a lot of the de facto leaders - artists, AMV makers, etc - started coming together to move off. Literally every staff on BMGf's roll were either non-shippers or PokéShippers, so it made sense what happened
Aside from that fiasco which the offending party apparently learned nothing from (promotions followed thereafter), the fact that Bulbagarden sold out to corporate and then tried to hide it put me off. If you don't want to end up like Marriland then don't sell out lol. There's blogs of the figurehead admin on there about him imaginarily going back and forth with Wikia about selling Bulbapedia and I was so tempted to say he already sold it lol, but I didn't. This thing is something Steve has implicitly confirmed at times too, it ain't no funk as much as BMGf's folks want to fake it. I think bulbagardenconfessional.tumblr has a lot of posts by ex-staff members if you scroll back far enough, and the first blog is a screenshot of TTEchidna with a vandalized Main Page, spoiling it. Shame, all of it really. Those two things are why I won't go back, besides being toyed with as a little boy by the staff.
Speaking of selling out it's why I won't go to Marriland, either. Along with Luck Hax (yes, our George <3) went all the coolness apparently so I dunno lol
But Alex. Surely you're not as active as you are by some default, no?
Well, you have me there. The PokéCommunity has imprinted on me with adolescent memories, and on top of that I'm hellbent on a mission I prefer not to unravel. The people here are nice and lax, the staff are very centralized and incredibly involved with their forum... I've spent $375 making little supporters here and there, it's just kind of what I've always been doing I guess lol. I don't dislike PC near enough to leave at any point, and often enough I'm just in love with it - hearts in my eyes and all. :P
