A fake picture that has been spread around the Internet showing so-called "remakes"
The only Pokémon to not have their stock art updated to
Ken Sugimori's new style are Generation II Pokémon, making them look out of place when next to their evolutions and pre-evolutions of other generations. Theorists speculate that a released remake would result in new stock art for these Pokémon.
It is also becoming physically impossible to play Game Boy Color Pokémon games for any length of time. The internal batteries used in Game Boy cartridges normally last for many years, but the ones in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal have begun dying quickly because the constantly running real-time clock drains the battery more quickly than expected. When the batteries become unusable, players are unable to retain game saves. Nintendo could address this problem by creating new games that run off of the
Nintendo DS's internal clock, like
Gen IV games do.
With the addition of the legendary birds and
legendary golems in Platinum, it seems that the games are moving away from dependence on Generation III to complete the Pokédex; this means that the other Pokémon still missing from Platinum could potentially appear in future remakes. There is also no legitimate way of getting Celebi in Europe or America without hard-to-find bonus disks; being a Johto Pokémon, it may be given an event if the remakes are released, much like
Mew was after FireRed and LeafGreen.
The remake theory is considered by some to be strengthened by the release of the third model of the Nintendo DS, the
Nintendo DSi. The system does not have a slot for GBA games, which effectively cuts DSi users off from the Generation III games and Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum's
dual-slot mode. DSi players will only be able to attain such Pokémon by trading either over Wi-Fi or with players who own older DS models. However, when this was pointed out by a reader of
Nintendo Power, the editors stated that this would likely cause sales of the older DS models to stay strong.
