    When do you think pokémon will "end"?

    How can you even define the "end of pokémon"? I suppose it would be if no more games came out. In any form; even if they stopped releasing main series games (like X/Y) they might continue to give out stuff like Battle Revolution and Mystery Dungeon. The anime will likely not stop until the main game series stops, but I think they are linked so if no more games come, no more anime will probably come. At least not with Ash as the hero! In general, I think we have many more years left before pokémon stops being a thriving franchise. New kids discover pokémon every day, for sure, and with new handheld technology, there are still many new aspects to add to the games in the future. Probably another decennium, at least :3 So what do you think?
     
    I think Pokemon is so flexible that it could keep on going indefinitely, like Mario and such. Video games in general are so relatively young that there aren't any real examples to go off of, but I would imagine the end of Pokemon won't be because they wanted to stop making Pokemon games, but because Nintendo stopped making handhelds.

    Not that I think that will happen anytime soon, mind. I just think the two are linked.
     
    Pokémon's still got plenty of years ahead of itself; I agree. It might go through minor to drastic changes every now and then (always does), but it would still live on. If games wind up losing their popularity, I think they would still continue developing them hoping they'd gain them back someday? Though, they'd definitely limit themselves on how often they release Pokémon games. :b
     
    I think at this point, Pokemon will be around in some form for as long as Game Freak, Nintendo, or whoever ends up owning it in the future wants it to be. Millions of people still play the games, and tens of thousands more watch the anime, play the TCG, read the manga, collect toys, etc., so it's not like the market is going away any time soon.

    I think the biggest challenge will be Nintendo's post-3DS endeavour. With smartphones and tablets being increasingly popular for mobile gaming, I'm not sure how successful a new handheld console would be a few years down the road (which is where I'd expect any main series Pokemon games to be). Maybe that means will have to see a re-invention of the series, but it won't stop people from playing. Even in the worst case scenario where that flops and games stop being made, I still expect Pokemon to live on through series like Super Smash Bros., since it's been so big for so long that I just can't see it disappearing for many, many years.
     
    End is not likely so far. The franchise has started getting mixed results. Some say the 3D graphics and better mechanics are a boon, others don't like that they've started straying far away from the original games, and have introduced too many new Pokémon to cope with. I should stay a steady trickle in the rise of fandom in the franchise is inevitable as long as they constantly put in newer games, steady the anime show and the fandom itself contribute to its fame, by spreading the games.

    But, a major 'change' in Pokémon is not too far-fetched, in my opinion. They've fiddled with many things over the years, perhaps a lot of changes at once that revamps the whole franchise, say a more serious outlook (more violence and intensity) or the transfer into many other platforms (with the gaming platform shifting to tablets and the cleverphones) or something of that sort. Might have severe critics, but a good gain in the end. But no end, not yet. They still have lots of fresh ideas to fiddle with.
     
    Depends on how Game Freak carries on with the games/anime. At the moment, with X/Y around and the 3D technology of the 3DS being utilised, the Pokemon series is at quite a strong point, so I doubt it'll end some time soon. While the series is bound for change, they'll be tidbits of improvements. Developers don't make giant leaps in games that have had a style of gameplay that's stuck for the last 10 or so years, and shown massive amounts of praise. No sign of disappointment over being a "rehash". If, however, Game Freak were to release a flop of a game, or a game that struggles to be adapted to, the fandom would literally crash, sales would plummet, the Pokemon series would then come to an end, as nobody on the outside is supporting it. This is one of the reasons as to why change is a fear to devs, as the loyal playerbase could die off due to a revamp in gameplay.

    Like I said, the Pokemon series couldn't be at a higher point than it is right now, with X and Y and Pokebank around. These 2 new things created by Game Freak, particularly Pokebank, is revolutionary. You see, it's because Game Freak has tapped into a previously unused technology for the Pokemon main series. The 3D features of the Nintendo 3DS. The truth is, as Nintendo devices evolve, so will Pokemon games. Which brings me to the next thing. What if Game Freak used the WiiU for a Stadium-esque game? Like PBR and the rest, you can transport your X/Y in game team onto the WiiU, and then battle it out. The WiiU is a next generation console, and, being a next gen console, is fairly strong. Just...imagine the gameplay. The graphics. Hopefully they fix Crobat's teeth. If Game Freak use this device like they have the 3DS, I'm sure the Pokemon series would grow even more.

    The fandom for the Pokemon series is, no exaggeration involved, huge. I'm sure that if Game Freak continue to please fans like they have with X/Y (c'mon...#1 of best selling 3DS games), then the Pokemon series will continue how it is, and maybe even grow some more.
     
    Well It may end someday but we will always remember the good times with pokemon (excluding Whitney's miltank) we will always remember trying to become the very best that no one ever was
     
    We all love Pokemon, for many different reasons.
    That won't keep it alive, at least not just that.
    HOWEVER
    There are people behind it who love it too, you know why? Because Pokemon is a HUGE Cash Cow.
    This Cash How is literally bringing people to buy consoles, and no one is silly enough to just give it away. Pokemon will live for a REALLY long time. And hopefully, really means A REAAAAALY long time.

    It definitely won't end anytime soon. Pokemon is a series with a lot of natural longevity, and a resurgence of nostalgia-based interest in the franchise by its original audience whom have now grown up has already begun to accumulate. It'll easily keep going for another decade at the very least.

    I don't know, I feel this is more the people you associate with and not the game as a whole - as we get older we associate with people that are more capable of taking a nuanced view of the game and that sees the bad in it, while kids just discovering it are like we were just discovering it, just with another game.

    For perspective, X&Y were the fourth highest selling games of 2013, at 7.64 million copies. All the ones that came above it are cross-platform console games. 3 of the top-selling games of all time for the DS are Pokemon games, and X&Y are currently the top selling games of all time on the 3DS. The show is ranked #1 in its time slot for its target audience, which, let's be clear, is boys under the age of 14. Most people posting on this forum aren't in the target audience, so us hearing mixed results from games doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

    All of this is very true. It's important to remember that as members of a dedicated online community we are already at the fringe of the total audience Pokemon reaches. The word of any one of us, or even from a professional critic, isn't terribly relevant as long as the franchise continues to rake in the cash, especially with regards to the demographic for which it was intended.
     
    I don't know. I honestly think they could keep making Pokemon games and it could never end, only because no matter what people are going to buy them. I'm going to quote Oryx - XY sold 7.64 million copies in 2013. What I think is really interesting about this number is that nobody even knew anything really about the game itself since it was released throughout the world on (mostly) the same day (ex. everyone outside of Japan didn't already know all the Pokemon/storyline). People are going to keep buying mainstream (not spinoff) Pokemon games just because it's Pokemon. I don't see that going down any time soon.
     
    Yea Pokemon doesn't have any forseeable end unless somehow Peta or something gets some kind of crap charge to stick to them and they turn bankrupt and can't afford to make new games. Or if they literally run out of ideas to the point that they start taking Pokemon from other generations and start changing little things to them and saying it's a new pokemon...oh wait, that's already happening.
     
    Pokemon may come to an end, but it will not be caused by PETA. Not unless they stop joking around and actually try to get what they want. Pokemon Black and Blue was not a good fighting material, and only crushed people, making them hate PETA that much more.

    It won't be PETA. My guess is they'll make it on a console no one buys, and that will be the ending point.
