I'm a guy with a terrible childhood (I haven't ever had a single Pokémon chartridge), so I'm catching up now that I'm 24. Nice to meet you, men... sirs.

However, I do have to feel sorry for you having gone through a childhood without playing Pokemon. The games are so awesome and that would have been so sad to have not had the experience most of the other members here have likely had as a kid, but at least you're planning to finally catch up and here you will learn so much.

Even worse, my Pokémon childhood was more precisely made of spectating the younger kids in my condo playing their GBs haha. Never too late to start anyway :)

Sure, no bother at all! I'm starting out with Yellow. I'm particularly attached to the first 151 Pokémons, and Yellow is unique, for the out-of-Pokéball Pikachu thing. I want to catch each Pokémon at the lowest level possible among all games, but I'll make them converge in Yellow, to keep the mood-revealing Pikachu following me everywhere I go. It's so great to see his sprite behind me while walking around out of battle!

Never too late. ;3 Yellow is a great game too and I admit I'm pretty addicted to it as well as Crystal, R/S/E, and FR/LG.. haha. Pokemon's too awesome. Welcome, Mr. Dude! Looking forward to your contributions across the forum and hope you'll have a swell time. Because you seem pretty swell yourself. 8]

It sucks that you never got to play the games as a child but it's great you're catching up now! You're never too old for Pokemon haha
Yellow was indeed an awesome game. I still recommend you to move your way upwards to the newer games, too! Even if you're more attached to the first generation, I think it's definitely worth it to give the others a chance as well :> (by the way, in HeartGold/SoulSilver your Pokemon follow you around, too!)
