Basically, the title. My first game was Sapphire, and while I did own a Yellow cartridge, it kept freezing. I've bought Yellow on the e-Shop and have been really enjoying it so far, even though I have no nostalgia attached to the games.

So, is anyone else playing these 20-year-old games for the first time in 2016?

Yes! I got a Gameboy color and a copy of Blue for my 17th birthday but never ended up playing through it fully, or even past the second gym. This year was my first time playing through Blue and beating the elite four and I honestly loved it. You can really tell how much harder it was back then compared to now.

Wow, you have never touched them until now? I'd love to hear more thoughts as you go haha. For me, gen 1 and 2 define the nostalgia feeling in life, pretty much. Is it harder because of a lot of helpful mechanics missing, or is the story or map harder to understand, or are the levels simply higher?

Well, I actually have played Blue a few times before this year but I never fully played it through. The first person you quoted is Altairis confusing, I know, sorry!

Honestly I think it's harder because of the missing helpful mechanics that we don't get until later gens. It's also partly due to the story, because nowadays the plot kind of holds your hand and takes you with it, but back in RBY you had to seek out the next place to go/who to talk to/etc and it could leave you pretty stumped, haha

Ah I did mean to quote you too, but the "never touched them before" was mostly meant at her I guess haha. You do have incredibly similar names too though ahah.

And yea, I'm playing X now for the first time and I've basically only properly played gen 1-2-3 before. It's suuuuch a difference; realizing that you had to go here and there and the fact that you could take on Fuchsia before Saffron or the other way around in Kanto was just weird. Not sure they meant for that though haha.

I had Pokemon Blue when it came out, but this is my first time playing the yellow version. I'm enjoying seeing the little differences between versions that I didn't experience back then.

It's definitely weirder going backwards, especially this far after having played the most recent games, Pokemon ORAS/XY. But it's also very cool because I know Yellow is one of the first games people played, and the game that convinced many people to stick around. Very cool, very interesting. But... Kanto isn't really my favorite. But I also love Pikachu! Also, late reply is late.

Funny thing, I play through them as if it was my first time playing. I got my Red Version 18 years ago and never stopped playing. Replayed Red a couple weeks ago, and picked the same starter I did the very first time I played; Bulbasaur. I really wanted to use Electabuzz and Arcanine and I'm a die-hard fan of the Gameboy Gens, it had to be Original Red.

I got Red on my DS but it's really hard to play the older games and being use to what we have now. Then going back and not having 80% of what we do today and just expect for things to be the same.

You are not the only one! I've had R/B, Yellow, and G/S for a while and found Crystal not long ago. I started each of them only this year, as something to do until S/M comes out this month. I like retro games in general, but I do think they still hold up pretty well as GB games.

I find Red quite fun, seeing what things were like back in the day, as I started during Gen4. It is a wonderful yet different experience.

I'd played both Red and Yellow before, but the first time I played Blue was after downloading it from the eShop a little while back. Even though I've put my run on hiatus with Sun/Moon out, I'm still having a lot of nostalgia moments, as well as coming across things I'd completely forgot about.

What I'm curious to know is this: Having been used to the newer games and features, how frustrating was it for you guys to have play through a whole game (or three) that lacked so many things?

I know I bought Yellow and when I played it again, only for a couple of hours even, I was annoyed at the walking speed and some of the other things Gen 1 games lacked. Not sure how I ever played them for so many hours before.

I kinda want to get them, but at the same time I don't. I had FR, and never ended up beating it. It was so boring, even compared to HG/SS which didn't have too many more features.

I got all three of the games when they first came out, but I am really glad to see that people are able to experience these games for the first time so many years later!

Me! I started with Blue a month or two ago, then went on to Yellow (and then to Silver and Crystal and I'm now playing through LeafGreen and Sapphire), and it was my first time picking up any Pokemon game.

I'm in kind of a weird position because Pokemon was actually a huge part of my childhood, I collected the cards and watched the show and could probably tell you every piece of trivia there was about the original 151 Pokemon, and my best friend and I liked to roleplay as Ash and Misty. I just never played the games, because I had zero interest in video games as a kid. So when I picked up Gen 1 Pokemon games this year, it was a huge nostalgia rush, but at the same time the gameplay was completely new.

Me. I bought Red for Speedrunning and the legendaries. And so I could get a damn Charizard without trading away one of my Tapus or Solgaleos. Seems that's all people ask for.

I'll probably do a normal run of it eventually. Kanto was the first region I played in (FireRed. Played it on an SP, amazed that they could put lights inside the screen like that), so I have quite a bit of nostalgia for it.

And messing around with the glitches is fun.
