Are friend codes officially dead?

Does anyone even use friend codes anymore? In your opinion, when did friend codes officially become obsolete to even use? My thoughts are they peaked in gen 6 kalos/hoenn, but I think alola killed the need to ask for friend codes. The only reason was just to find friends easily on festival plaza.

I don't know about other games, but I don't use friend codes for trades on Switch Pokemon titles. It just seems pointless. Trade codes did away with them for the better in my opinion.

Oh hi Alex. I think they may do away with friend codes altogether on the generation console. I'm also trying to get other people's opinions on this. Friend codes, I think we're primarily used to find specific people through gens 4-7 or earlier gens with family members and close friends. People would fondly remember gen 6 specifically for friend safaris and secret bases. I'm don't remember if festival plaza added anything that only friends can do. Legends 2 is coming out, do you also think it'll be link codes or will this unceremoniously bring back the pss? I would love if it returned to the pss format, due to the gen 6 nostalgia, but I highly doubt they'll return to something that was on a touch screen.

I don't usually like to speculate on what may or may not be on the next gen consoles, but I don't see Nintendo doing away with friend codes anytime soon. As for whether there's going to be a return of the PSS in the new Pokemon game? I very highly doubt it sadly, but it's not impossible I suppose. It depends on how important whatever dev team making it wants player-to-player interactions to be I'd say.

Good point. As for their approach on player to player interactions UIs go, they'll most likely stay at the bear minimum and take legends Arceus approach of link codes. It is an easy way to find someone specifically to trade with, but aren't remembering link codes the same as remembering friend codes, but 4 digits shorter? My best guess the only major reasons Nintendo even keeps friend codes are mainly for other online game series such as Mario maker, kart, and party? Uncertain about maker and party. Splatoon, animal crossing, smash bros., and perhaps other battle royales, and first person battle shooter games. But back to on topic, if it it went a little off topic. If majority of people who play Pokemon on switch don't use friend codes, why keep that functionality in the games? There is nothing defending that they should be taken away, no one would actually care. The only thing that would convince me and possibly others to keep using friend codes, is if they return friend safari in legends 2. (Highly unlikely, though.)

wait are you talking about the ones for the Switch?

Yeah I wish there was a simpler way, but I agree that they are somewhat pointless when you can find your friends via other means such as using social media connections, mobile games, and mutual gaming (met during a match, etc). But I understand it as a unique identifier.

Also to another point, the miis have taken a step aside as well as of the switch titles. A mii is not really required for friend codes on switch though. What could make things worse is if they do away with choosing your profile pic with popular Nintendo characters, but replacing them with the new "switch sports" friendos or whatever they call them on the next Nintendo console.

Yes, friend codes are dead currently where Pokémon games on the Switch are concerned. It's all about those link codes you must set each and every time. Friend codes were used up until Pokémon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and explicitly have not been used in a Pokémon game on the Switch.

I'm going to assume it's all about keeping everyone, particularly children, safe.

They are still used in a majority of other Nintendo games on the Switch though!
