Are We Never Safe From Technology?

    I've been watching MatPat's Game Theories on Watch_Dogs and how the games provide a horrible image of our own reality, telling us that everything runs on the same computer system and any hacker and easily change it to his or her command. This had me felt scared and made me wonder why no one from the technological side of things has ever considered these scenarios actually happening, which brings me to the main question: Are we never safe from technology because of how vulnerable they are to hackers nowadays? Here's MatPat's third Watch_Dogs video on the subject:

     
    Technology is a subjective discussion.

    On one end of the spectrum, we kind of need it to survive nowadays and would probably lose our minds if technology ceased to function ever again.

    On the other end, where there is a will to corrupt, there generally is a way. Technology isn't the only thing we should be concerned about, it is just one of the most active concerns (besides that ISIS crap).

    Maybe "smart technology" is a better term then. As in stuff with computers built in.

    Because that's the kind of change that's gotten people worried. People now have cars and refrigerators and pacemakers with computers and wifi. No one wants to have the thing that keeps their heart beating to be shut down by someone remotely.

    I do think that this technology is outpacing safety concerns, but that's nothing new. Radium was used as a paint for everyday items. Fossil fuel burning cars caused railroads to be torn up and replaced with highways. There are thousands of examples one can point to. Adding computers to everything is the thing we're doing now whether the thing really needs a computer. Mostly we're doing it for convenience, at least with the items that normal people are likely to have. Your fridge texting you a reminder to buy milk might be nice, useful even, but if you pay attention to what's in your fridge you'll already know that. It's just a symptom of people being too busy to have "normal" lives so we're outsourcing all these little tasks to smart technology.

    In reality, technology is only as dangerous as the amount of information we give it. If we mask ourselves online through anonymization tools, then you're not giving away your location. If you use alternate names on social media (Or just don't use it at all), then you're keeping your private life private. If you are smart in how you use technology, it can be safe. However, for the most part, if you're not doing anything in which you'll have people after you, the technology is a relatively safe thing to have as long as it's used properly and responsibly.

    Besides, technology has brought about many advances in all sorts of things, including medicine and safety, so as long as it's used with good intention, there's really no problem to having technology.

    Even if you didn't give out a lot of your private information online, you're still vulnerable to hackers because of the technology they have to hack into your appliances and automobiles and cause trouble under their own command, which was what was shown in Watch_Dogs.
     
    In terms of unplugging? No. Not even close. The amount of tech that we have on the planet and in the air ensures that you can be found if you're being looked for. Satellites, cell towers, global transport, computers, drones, tracking systems. identification codes, credit cards, passwords, social security numbers... technology will be present for the rest of your life and the only way to escape it completely is to wind up shipwrecked on some godforsaken, unnamed island.
