Do you prefer powerhouse Ash or rookie Ash, why?

That largely depends on the extent. If he was a powerhouse the entire time, there would be no character dev at all during the show. I hated how he acted in Johto and I was glad they brought him down some in Hoenn and Sinnoh.

Rookie Ash, I hated how he acted in Kanto. He was over confident and just pure cocky. Thinking he could do everything, not even thinking he couldn't or taking in to consideration about everyone else. Honestly, Unova did a lot better job. A hell of a lot better job that the original season did.

Largely, I don't mind if he is a Rookie or not. But he can't be totally something and none of the other. There has to be a mixture. If he is a Rookie again in Alola, and I don't think he is, if they do a better job with character development, I would not mind at all.

Ash can't win everything and not lose anything. That isn't how telling a story works, and if it was a book, I would stop reading before I get done with half the book.

It made sense considering he's a young kid. When he lost he either accused the other trainer of cheating or got really upset, which makes sense for a pre-teen boy who doesn't yet know how to truly handle adversity. They did a good job of progressing him from this in Orange Islands and Johto.

I don't want Ash to be a total powerhouse (that's Gary Stu territory), but I don't want him to be downgraded to rookie status. Ash is already a veteran trainer, but he also likes to challenge himself by starting from scratch whenever he visits a new region. The only reason people look down on him is because of his Pikachu constantly getting nerf every new saga due to some deus-ex machina, giving the illusion that Ash went back to rookie status.

Ash/Satoshi should be an experienced trainer at least. (He's a Rookie because of the new region: Not knowing the pokemon and what they are capable of.)

I love it when they showed just how knowledgeable he is in the start XY.

You don't see him say "Whats that?" (Except for the Eng Dub... curse the dub. Satoshi sounds like an Idiot in the dub I swear.) He knows the moves/Pokemon(he's seen). Citron info dumps the moves for the audience / Serena and Eureka.

It makes sense for him to ask what's that? about Pokemon that are new to the show, but I always got annoyed when he asked that when he's already seen the Pokemon. That definitely made him look dumb.

He only does that in the dub... Ash (eng dub) is unbelievably dumb, he's a character that forgets moves he's already used.

That's my biggest gripe with the show, Ash's experience and Pikachu's level just get reset now at the beginning of each series generation. It wasn't an issue up until Hoenn/Sinnoh.
