Australia to Censor the Internet

Blocking out things and censoring internet is just something I hate, specially if there is no choice...

They do it to promote communism, since if people doesn't have internet, they'd not get much knowledge about the outside world. And if that happens, you are easily made to believe that communism is good. This is stuff realted to economics, and it's true.

For once, Rudd fails. I just hope the govt. reconsiders, half the internet will be censored just like on DET computers.

In the article it said there will be
a list of sites that people can opt-out on,
that are unsutaible for children, which is most likely porn

But there'll also be a filter that's mandatory that all ISPs will put on and you can't have turned off, which will in turn slow down Australia's already poor and slow internet. That, and the filters will require so many resources that the servers will be slowed down and upgrades will be costly. Then what will happen is a rise in prices for internet access, possibly.

China has it slowed. For those who live in Britain and opt-in, they'll notice a slowdown, if slight.

Software-based filtering is efficient. ISP-level filtering is not.

Computers in schools are really horrid, aren't they? :(

Filters fail. So many false positives arise from it. It's not funny.

I know. What's wrong with using the filters they already provide on Netalert?

What's Netalert? An Australian filtering system? (Internet in schools anywhere is crap, so it's not just Australia I was referring to.)

Perhaps the government thinks that ISP-level filtering is more efficient (it's not)?

This is seriously a load of ********. People are still gonna find a way around the filters(I hope) and it's just gonna slow us down. Like the Department of Education DET PORTAL. Unless a school wants a site unblocked it stays un-accesable. Just terrible.

well still getting to use P2P stuff is good but still being slow is the only down fall

You might be out of luck there too, the govt. could block bittorent and DDL sites, but Gnutella (LimeWire) could still be go (here's hoping!)

You've got that right. When I try to research something at school, about 70% of the websites I try to access are blocked. I just don't see the point any more.

Yep its official, Australia has gone totally crazy... I mean i understand about the "illegal" part such as Emulation/ROMs but come on... thats just bull. *Sigh* I don't know what this world is coming to.

I'm sure there will be thousands of aussies(including me) to stand up against this terrible filter...
...I mean..what exactly are they going to block?
If you read the article, anything the government deems "illegal"

No that I agree with the filter, but what ground do you have exactly if you do intend to protest?
If they're deemed crimes then it'd be like turning yourself in as a criminal.
