Chit-Chat: Back to the Grind(stone)

Okay, so after beating the game and going a bit into NG+, here's my verdict of Dark Souls 3:

Awesome PvE, poor PvP

PvP is poor because:
- Poise doesn't do shit
- Some covenants are completely dead, especially Watchdogs of Farron because see above or become completely dead after a certain point due to easily obtainable rewards (Aldrich Faithful in NG+ is sad)
- Lack of backstep iFrames
- No infinite use Blue Eye Orb for Blades and Sentinels
- Matchmaking prioritizes players who've already had someone summoned into their world, encouraging ganking.
- No arenas for dedicated PvP in-game (the community pretty much had to make their own in the form of the large courtyard past Pontiff Sulyvahn)
- Extremely limited chances to respec your build.
- Don't EVEN get me started on the SoftBan system

And if you're going to give me a story of how you don't play PvP, please do me a favor and keep it to yourself. Good for you. Because even PvE has some good ideas from Dark Souls 2 that got removed. Dark Souls 2 NG+ >>>> Dark Souls 3 NG+. No bonfire ascetics either and Company of Champions got removed. Plus, less weapon/armor quantity means less Fashion Souls/cosplay fun.

Overall, between this and Bloodborne, I'm now convinced that the A Team knows how to make a good PvE game, but are lacking in making a good PvP game. The B Team (who made Dark Souls 2) is the opposite.

So final verdict on Dark Souls overall:

Dark Souls 1: Best PvE, good PvP
Dark Souls 2: Subpar PvE, good PvP
Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the First Sin: Best PvP, good PvE
Dark Souls 3: Awesome PvE, poor PvP
Bloodborne: Awesome PvE, non-existent PvP

Overall, gameplay-wise I'd say DkS2 SoTFS is the best game in the series when it comes to PvP (DkS1 still has best PvE). The game had some pretty good gameplay that was only kept from perfection due to two REALLY stupid design choices (despawning enemies and Soul Memory matchmaking). Dark Souls 3 is, however, superior in terms of atmosphere, story, sense of world scale, awesome boss designs, and PvE difficulty (at least until NG+).

That being said, there's still opportunity for Dark Souls 3's PvP to be redeemed. Patches can still be on the horizon. Namco Bandai could finally do something about the hackers. FROM could finally notice that turning off Poise was a big mistake. There's two DLC planned that could make things right. Keep in mind, Dark Souls 2 used to have slightly worse PvP than Dark Souls 1, but then got way better thanks to a combination of a remake (Scholar of The First Sin) and patches. There's still hope for this being the ultimate SoulsBorne game in due time.

Since Today is OVERWATCH DAY, which i am very late at declaring, but those at the other side of teh globe will still experience...

here's some nice Overwatch related news and stories:

Kid designs overwatch character, Blizzard finishes the job = Heartwarming

Overwatch Prawn scene (VERY NSFW) but its for sharing the news, not the prawn = Avoid the NSFW pictures and just read the LULZ!

But I ain't changing my sig and avatar to match D: No no no no no. Even though I am a Soldier 76 / Reaper main. The Doomguy is too manly to be replaced by anything

Also, i finally found the proper terms for the two sides of gaming nowadays:

Story and character driven experience = referring to Single player and character driven stories
Competitive Multiplayer = basically what it is.

I should be headstomping people in League right now but I'll do it after my really close friend calls me.

So, let's say - and I'm not saying this at all, I'm just asking for the sake of curiosity - one was to consider buying a multiplayer shooter...would it be better to get Overwatch or Battleborn? Because it seems like the latter has been completely forgotten in the wake of the former...and, as petty as the AAA industry is, that doesn't typically happen. I have to admit I'm extremely curious.

Not curious enough to shell out a stupid amount of money for PS+ and a copy of the game, but still curious. I'll get Doom for my FPS this year somewhen (soon) but...eh, these things drop in price quickly, so who knows?

When it came for me choosing between getting Battleborn or Overwatch, the decision was easy for me. I chose Battleborn for certain reasons. One of the things being that it was made by Gearbox, who are known for the Borderlands series. Another reason why I chose Battleborn is because it has a Campaign mode, which Overwatch does not have. Plus I find the characters in Battleborn to be a lot more interesting than the characters in Overwatch.

It makes sense, considering Overwatch's announcement was this Pixar-level animation and Blizzard had numerous Beta tests and advertisements since, Overwatch's hype is enough to dwarf any game, especially in the wake of the many, many Hero Shooters we've gotten and will continue to get over the course of the next year.

Now, personally, I would say get Battleborn. Not because it's better, but because, currently, it's cheaper and it will probably be alive for a much shorter time. Despite it being a Gearbox game (with a hilarious, albeit brief campaign), it's merely managed to lump itself in with the Hero Shooters that are currently out or coming out. And, considering the company, I imagine content and support will be a lot less heavy than their icy competitor's title, especially since they put so much more money in by contrast. Plus, you like Borderlands, and Battleborn retains the same style of humor and feels like it somewhat. It being a Hero Shooter mixed with a MOBA helps there, as there are mooks and, again, a campaign that feels very Gearbox. And short- it's definitely something of a tutorial (but it does have it's own difficulty, just know that multiplayer's the game's main appeal).

But if that's not particularly attractive to you then I say go Overwatch. And if it is, I say give Overwatch a look anyway, just don't feel you need to rush to buy it. Having said all of this, they're pretty apples to oranges, largely due to Battleborn being a MOBA that also happens to an FPS. I mean, I could say that, of the two titles, Overwatch is more polished, which I suppose it is, but Battleborn's use progression systems (basically skill trees) in matches to make the game adaptive is certainly something all its own. At the same time, Overwatch is a lot faster paced and relies on a smaller set of skills rather than a large pool of them (which benefits it a fair bit). To which I say, whether you want an FPS or a MOBA really will tell a lot about whether you should get Overwatch or Battleborn respectively, because they both are very much games of their genres. In Battleborn enemies'll die slower and maps are more progression-based (in the literal sense, as in you'll generally be trying to move forward) whereas Overwatch is more Arena-based and lends itself to quicker skills, mobility, and thus faster-paced gameplay...oi.

Pretty rare that I'll do this, but you might wanna give this a look-see if you're still unsure.

Spoiler:

I should allow myself to be articulate on this kind of matter.

Though in reality, the thing is that one shouldn't really bother investing in a multiplayer game if they aren't going to really be "in" to it. When i mean becoming "in" to it, you have to go to this phase were you care more for playing against the competition of players instead of the typical immersive experience like in a story-driven single player experience. I would find it very difficult to explain but I'll do my best to tell how it is. To be "in" with competitive multiplayer is to forge a new mindset of having fun. I don't want to immediately call it a straight up "play 2 win persona" but its a sort of transformative state. You have to become willing to learn through getting your arse kicked so that in the future, after practice and such, you suddenly become this ultra beast murder warrior carrylord champion whose owning scrubs, boosted kids, and other good players all at the same time. But if you feel that from the start of it all, you already feel like your the UBMWCC player that you think you are, that's fine. Just be prepared to face much tougher competition the more you play, which is great anyway since its part of the whole fun. Everyone wants a challenge.

I actually prefer Battleborn myself since unlike Overwatch, Battleborn has more to offer outside of the competitive multiplayer. But in reality, i think Battleborn is still best spent on the competitive multiplayer experience so its still a question of whether you desire that whole "transformative process" from simply having fun playing the game to having fun competing with and winning against other people and becoming an ultra beast murder warrior carrylord champion . I would want to write a whole post on how i got that Multiplayer soul and fire within me that was built up from my childhood, teenager years, and up to now but that would mean a crapload of letters. Heck I'm willing to write a blog about it just for anyone to read who's curious on how i got my MP competitive side in gaming.

it doesn't help that BB or Overwatch are both pay-2-online authenticate-then play. its like you have to be really invested with either title you are getting and be willing to love competitive multiplayer from heart to soul.

Which is why I'd still prefer TF2 for those who just want some delicious F2P First person action. At least Team Fortress 2 has a couple of things to do like getting those different weapons and gear in order to enhance or completely change the way a certain class is played. And because its F2P, anyone can easily come back to it without much regrets, especially if one isn't the kind who buys microtransactions and just wants to play the game as is.

AHHHHH IM SO TRIGGERED! HELP!!!!!

And yes, DOOM is pretty much the game i highly recommend if one would just want to stick to some good ole Single Player experience (and be manly as heck. Suck it overwatch and that other game!) The fact that DOOM's single player campaign is immensely great compared to its multiplayer, one isn't really losing anything if they decide to just stick around DOOM's single player campaign and not bother with the MP portion of it. Also, its been mentioned a hundred times as well that DOOM will also feature user created content through SNAPMAPS as a way to expand from just the Single player campaign. Basically its some custom levels and possibly even custom campaigns (basically a set of levels) created by other users. Also, we've already talked about this in the DOOM thread that the user created content are cross-platform, meaning that those who create SNAPMAPS in PC can still share those maps for the console players, so XBONES and PS4 players aren't missing out. heck Necrum's already been making some maps but i thiink he's busy doing more Five Nights at Freddy stuff because of his avatar change. (YOU TRAITOR! J/k)

Holy sh1p I said a mouthful.

Thanks for the detailed responses :3

I think of the two, Battleborn would be the more appealing, mostly for the sheer variety involved. Not only does it encourage experimentation, but having so many options means that there is no "one way to play" which a lot of games with limited skill systems seem to fall into the trap of doing...it's extremely boring when everyone is doing the same thing; another reason I've never been a huge PvP fan. I'm not a massive fan of fast-paced gameplay either; it's very hit or miss, and I'm a more technical player, probably due to the types of games I used to play as a kid. Add to that I play a lot of tactical turn-based games now, and I generally find it more enjoyable to plan a strategy than I do just dive right in and hope for the best.

...and it feels so weird to have the least to say on a subject. But as someone who isn't hugely into PvP and has very limited experience with FPS titles of this generation - about the closest I've gotten is Dishonored and Borderlands - it's a fairly new thing for me. As I said...boundaries. Trying to push them out a little. There is a possibility I may eventually end up with both, since they do seem like they'd offer unique experiences, but...eh, AAA titles. They depreciate in value ridiculously quickly, and chances are I'd be able to pick up both for the price of one of them now by Christmas.

Since Dark Souls 3 PVP is crap at the moment, I'm finding ways to get more co-op and PvP in Dark Souls 1 on PC and I seem to have found it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/4ilq2x/dscm_dark_souls_connectivity_mod/

Turns out the co-op and PvP in previous titles is very much alive, but you need to get past certain boundaries that Steam has in place. Me and Yukari will be using this for a playthrough (his first). If one other person wants to join, let us know.

I have many builds in plan for Dark Souls 1: https://www.mugenmonkey.com/lists

BLIZZARD! I DEMAND A SOLIDER 76 SPIN OFF GAME, FOR MY MURDERC**K!

Would it be a prequel? A side story? Or heck even a sequel? HOW ABOUT 76: THE PRESEQUEL! Oh yeah! Pre sequels baby! PRESEQUELS RIGHT OUT OF THE ASHE HOLE!

Heck Soldier 76 is already an affectionate parody of modern FPS games from the way he plays and his whole personality and stuff. They can easily make a single player based campaign that affectionately parodies and alludes to both 90s style FPS and modern style FPS, with DOOM and Call of Duty being the perfect games to make allusions and parodies out of since both games are cultural icons of their own right AND with very distinct single player campaign gameplay styles. And then slap on some duck and cover system in the game with the ability to shoot blindfire like in Rainbow Six Vegas, and now Soldier 76 is parodying 3 SHOOTERS ALL AT ONCE! LIKE AN AMAZINGLY HOT TRIPLE BANANA SPLIT SUNDAE OF RIFLE AND BULLETS straight up in Soldier 76's 7.6 inch ice cream scope! that's how its done! *I dunno what the f**k i'm talking about*

I can only dream, but one day.. One day..

Magic 2012 came to XBOX One BC today. Better believe I downloaded it. Probably my favorite version of the game.

I have to admit, whilst I would never buy an Xbone due to the sheer lack of upcoming exclusive titles on it that appeal to me, there are a fair few classic titles on it that I'd love to experience. Well, maybe if I win the lottery or something, haha.

Because screw logic when it comes to silly things!

As far as i know, I remember Gears and Halo being those titles that almost wanted me to convert into an XBoxer or be an XBONER.. XBONER! And no, That's totally not being dirty. I could have been a Gears junkie, if I had an XBOX. But there's Gears 1 for PC anyway, so its all well and good.

Yes, it'd be nice if we had more than just the Steam version of FFVII on the PS4...I mean, I can play the games on my Vita and PS3 (and my PSP if I care to dredge it up) but...come on, Sony. You want to make 20 million more unit sales in the next fiscal year? Broadening your options by putting PS1 games onto the PS4 storefront - and some more PS2 classics - couldn't hurt.

Hey, Xiao, you like my new sig?

Also, if Sony wanted to make 20 million more unit sales in the next fiscal year, they'd tell SquareEnix to stop fucking around and actually give us a Final Fantasy VII remake instead of....whatever the hell THAT is. I think we were all wrong to suggest to SquareEnix we wanted a Final Fantasy VII Remake....we wanted a REMASTER. Final Fantasy VII with TURN-BASED COMBAT, modern graphics, translations that don't suck, clearer soundtrack, and overall fixing the problem of "block people."

So to anyone wanting a Resident Evil 2 "remake," stop saying remake and instead say "remaster." I want what was done with the Gamecube version of Resident Evil 1 done with the second game. To this day I still think the remastered Gamecube version of Resident Evil 1 was the best "remake" anyone's ever done with a game.

If you want some great remakes, just take a look at some of the ones that came out on the PSP. Megaman: Maverick Hunter X, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, Ultimate Ghost and Goblins, the remakes of Final Fantasy 1 and 2 (Squenix should look at those for examples on how to do remakes right). All of these were games that, to me at least, managed to update the graphics and soundtracks of the original games, add new features, and still keep most of the charm of the originals.

On the topics of remakes, did anyone ever play Megaman: Powered Up (also on the PSP)? It is probably one of my favourite games of all time, not only because it is a solid remake of the first Megaman game, but also because it has a level creator mode that makes it a lot like a Megaman equivalent of Super Mario Maker.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles was amazing, it's a shame we'll probably never seen another good Castlevania title because Konami is Konami...like we'll probably never see another good Final Fantasy because Square Enix is Square Enix. Sometimes developers really shoot themselves in the foot with remakes; it highlights either how little their titles in a series have progressed (in Nintendo's case) or how their priorities have shifted for the worse in their modern-day titles.

I know I've commented - at length - on the whole remake/remaster thing before, but I will say that fans need to learn what the difference is between the two and developers need to be more transparent about exactly what they're doing to things to change them up...assuming they're doing anything at all. The two terms are used interchangably by everyone and that is not okay.

Also, Steins;Gate 0 is coming West this year and I could not possibly be more pleased.

Hey, Xiao, you like my new sig?

Best sig in the world. Its amazing. So good. and yes I'm perfectly honest in saying that.

*****************

Its funny, RE1 Remaster for the Gamecube was that dang good. All it needed was basically other than a graphical change (obviously) and improved gameplay, providing gameplay that's a huge improvement over the original game and tech. I wish i had a gamecube to have a full assessment of how great that RE1 game is, good thing one of my close friends has one, and the game itself.

You all wanna know what's another great way to remaster a game? ITS CALLED BRUTA..... *Cackslapped! THAT IS A GAMEPLAY + GORE MOD THAT MODERNIZES AN OLD GAME YOU F****KING IDIOT!* xD

I just bought in Postal 2 because it was on a super sale. I felt that I needed something like it considering what kinda happened to me (IRL) yesterday..

The only problem with the Resimaster on the Gamecube was that the controls were absolutely atrocious; it made playing the thing far more terrifying than it would have been if they'd have mapped things out properly.

Not sure how it handles on the PS3 because I've not gotten to it yet. I just finished Resi 4 last night - and fuck Regenerators, seriously - and I may start Resi 5 next, just to get it out of the way...or take a break and play something else. My nerves can't handle it right now. xD

First off, no, that sounds horribly uncomfortable.

Second...I'd recommend playing something else if you wish to maintain even a small portion of your sanity. Going from 4 -> 5 -> 6 is a downhill spiral that'll drive you mad.
