Suggestion: Banned User Second Chance Program

Perhaps the user could submit a well thought out message to a staff member as to what they've learned and how they will avoid their misbehavior in the future.

Honestly, it is pretty darn hard to get banned here. Even if one didn't read any of the rules, it is hard to get banned. The sorts of things that might be accidental from misinterpreting, or not reading the rules won't get you banned. You have willingly, and knowingly do something that is completely unacceptable.

Maybe there are some exceptions, but it really isn't difficult to frequent these forums without so much as getting an infraction, of any sort. I know that is pretty harsh, but really, common sense, and a desire not to break rules and stir chaos is all that is needed...

If they broke the rules hard enough to get banned then I don't see how any well-thought out message can make up for that. Besides, a message is only words. A member who wants to come back would probably just lie.

There was a case like that, but when most people that get perma-banned just make a bunch of alts that are obviously ban evading, it makes us not take the serious email they send...well, seriously. And that's only if they send it. I mean, I can see this being beneficial. I know of a guy that this happened for, but not everyone is like him. And then there are some people that get banned for something that harmed other people here, and when there are cases like that, I personally wouldn't wanna see said banned member get to come back.

But if banned members took a more mature approach about it and sent an acceptable email, after they've been banned a good number of time however, then I can see this working. I say after a good number of time mainly because well, obviously no one's going to learn their lesson after an hour or so of being banned. And some people will send emails after a short amount of time like that, so yeah.

Although it is an admirable idea, I don't see it working. Maybe I'm just cynical, but they were clearly banned for a reason. If they were able to be put on a strict one-strike-and-you're-out system I'd be willing to let such banned members come back, but they were banned for something serious and it's not likely they would have changed. What if they hacked someones account, for starters? I remember a chat in IRC when they were discussing someone who wanted to come back who had done that and that person was completely shot down. Also, if they posted pornography, they shouldn't ever be allowed to come back.

It's quite hard to get banned here, but some people can benefit from it. I know of a user that was here until it was discovered that he was ban evading, but he had changed- but he got banned again anyway. It could work for some people, but not all.

This is something I kind of dislike, but at the same time, had they taken the time to contact staff and not just went straight to ban-evading, it wouldn't have to happen like that. But I generally dislike when someone gets banned, makes a new account later, is clearly a better person than they used to be, but gets banned again. But like I said in my last post, if they did something really bad, such as making other members uncomfortable, then no, they shouldn't really be coming back, even if they changed. That's just too big of an offense in my book.

They get banned for a reason... no point in unbanning. Besides you get warning/infractions on here so they are similar to chances.

From what I have seen these supposed "perma banned" members had several "chances" to reform their actions up until their eventual ban. So this just seems like a plea once past the point of no return to come back when they probably had ample verbal warnings, a number of yellow cards which are similiar to the aforementioned verbal warnings, and probably enough red cards infractions to result in them being banned. So I don't know how many actual "chances" a user needs to reform their said actions. Too me if they couldn't adjust after the first several warnings and infractions then when will they ever?

I know it's nice for the member to pour their heart out about wanting back in. But they should have learned from whatever they continued to do in the first place or they wouldn't be in that position.

I'm sure their is very very few instances, that this may be applicable but otherwise I don't see this working out.

From what I hear, the h-staff will review your case if a permabanned member sends them a message but because most of them ban-evade and such that makes them pretty ineligible for unbanning, since they chose to break rules even after they got permabanned for breaking rules.

Mmhmm, if a banned member has a way of getting hold of us somehow then we can discuss them, and why they were banned in the first place, etc. It's really, really rare to let a perma-banned user come back, though. That's why it 'permanent'. :/ We don't think its right to go back on it, not that it hasn't happened - because we understand that people change.

They had their chances. If you've done enough to get a permanent ban, you've already exhausted your second chance, third chance, fourth chance etc.

We already have a review process for this, though. It's just not out in the open. If they feel it was unjust or if they determine that they'd want yet another chance, they have the ability to email Higher Staff to discuss it.

Right off the top of my head... I don't think we've un-banned someone who was perm-banned under the infraction system (and if we have then it's only been one or two cases). So if you've been banned in the last few years, or plan on getting banned anytime soon then don't waste your time.

After the first infraction/warning if they don't want to take the time to read the rules then that's their prob if they end up banned. Let alone after their first temp-ban. And if that don't work then maybe their second and maybe 3rd temp-ban will fix them. Quite frankly if someone broke enough rules to earn a perm ban they don't belong on PC.

They were perma-banned for a reason, and likely a good one at that. Most of the folks who are perma-banned from are ones that cause harm to members, staff, and other people. Some also just post pornographic content on the forum to get their-selves banned.

Well, I was throwing the suggestion out there. I wasn't aware that there was a ban appeals procedure, since I've never been even temporarily banned.
