Best story gen 1-7?

BW+B2W2 together would be my pick. Not sure what would be 2nd place for me, though including all the gens I think I'd go with SV.

Definitely Gen 5's. Team Plasma were perfect villains actually questioning the reason for using pokemon and they were successful. Plus there's N being an great antagonist. Love that Black and White continued the story in 2. After gen 5 I'd say gen 7 because of Lusamine being both the perfect villain and antagonist. My only complaint being that Ultra Sun and Moon toned down her character.

5 easily, particularly BW. I just really liked the N story and found it super interesting. Then it's probably gen 7, Sun and Moon, mostly for Lusamine!
Yes! I hated Lusamine as a kid in the base games. Which means they did a good job writing her as a villain. N is an awesome character too, took awhile to grow on me as I couldn't grasp the story well as a 10 year old. But each time I replay gen 5 I love the story more!

Some of the things they went into with the sequels are awesome!

I agree with lusamine, hated her as a kid. Great villain, absolute narcissist but it works. Still do hate her when I replay base sun/moon tbh even if I know what happens.
Team plasma using a legit question to manipulate everyone was a great story I agree 100%! Took awhile for gen 5 story to grow on me as I couldn't grasp it all as a 10 year old but I love it more every time I replay it. What do you think of ghetsis? I've heard conflicting opinions on him over the years.

Gen 5 is pretty much the point when they put in the most amount of effort in regards to storytelling. Although, I do still enjoy the lack of story that gens 1 and 2 provide. Those games, I feel like, seem to be better in regards to "environmental storytelling".
Interesting, I've never heard anyone say gen 1/2 had the best story. I agree that sometimes it's good to play something without a huge story. Im curious, what do you mean by "environmental storytelling"?

Hmm.... the only ones that were somewhat decent story-wise were gen 5 and gen 7 from those gens.
If we're talking mainline games anyway. Recently played PMD Rescue team DX, which is a remake/remaster, and that had a better plot than the average mainline game lol

Haven't heard gen 4 be mentioned yet. Underrated story imo. What makes gen 4 your favorite?
I actually get that it's not everyone's cup of tea because Cyrus really seems to be the usual villain we find in Pokémon games, but overall imo he was better written than most of the other villains. Especially, it seems like his ideals despite very selfish make more sense than Archie's and Max's. I love gen4 in general, but I also like the story because if you read between the lines, maybe you could find more interesting details. For example, the whole Cyrus and Mars/Jupiter/Saturn kind of relationship, the inner desires of Cyrus, but especially I like how the story and the lore go hand in hand together, and gen4 lore is pretty rich. You get to see the Universe getting distorted and rewritten, you see Cyrus being attacked by Giratina, you get to explore the distortion world. I find all of this to be pretty cool tbh. And then some dialogues could be deeper than expected like Cyrus vs Cynthia in the Distortion world.
