Hello, there! Welcome to the exciting world of Pokémon! My name is Cedar, a Pokémon Professor here in the vast and breathtaking Sinnoh Region. I can tell from the look in your eyes that you're all quite eager to skip over all this premilinary talk and skip right down to the nitty gritty, so let's get right down to business. Congratulations! You're now an official Pokémon trainer! Kudos and backpats all around!

I know it must have been an actual chore, waiting for the time to come of age. I can't blame you, honestly. That law that upped the required age to 15 years old to obtain a trainer's liscence came at the worst possible time. But after that whole Galactic mess that arose five years ago, allowing ten year olds and criminals who more or less act like crazed cultists to run around with creatures that contain the power to melt cities and cause earthquakes seemed a bit irresponsible. Regardless, you managed to buckle down to your studies and passed your final exams here at the Sandgem Town Pokémon Academy with flying colors. Now, all that's left to do is claim your starting Pokémon and finally begin your journey across the wide and fruited plains.

But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves just yet. A lot here has changed in Sinnoh over the course of just five years. I'm sure you're all familiar with Cyrus and Team Galactic, the group led by that crazed sociopath who dreamed of creating his own world by harnessing the powers of legendary Pokémon such as Dialga and Palkia? Well, thankfully his plans were thwarted through the combined efforts of three young trainers and the former champion of the Sinnoh region, Cynthia. The strange thing is the man seemed to vanish without a trace, leaving his would-be followers behind. Many of them were arrested, with several even being commited for being quite insane. It was after that whole incident that many of the changes began to happen around Sinnoh. Professor Rowan saw the timing right to finally step into retirement. After holding the title for many years, Champion Cynthia was finally bested in battle by a couragous and heroic blue-haired girl. More importantly though, a technicological revolution began to take place here in the Sinnoh region.

The famed PokéTech company of yore was purchased by an exciting new company now as the Hexcorp, and they began to help our beloved region finally step into the modern era along the likes of Unova and Kalos. While many were supicious of the comapny to begin with, they have truly went above and beyond expectations to truly make the lives of those in Sinnoh better. They even took it upon themselves to help rehabilitate those who were involved in Team Galactic by offering them jobs and training them to readjust back to a normal life. The company is even responsible for crafting those new, state of the art Pokédexes your carrying. Many of those who live in Sinnoh have begun to turn their backs upon the old legends and myths, instead openly embracing the infinite possibilities of the new and exciting futures that await before them. All in all, it seemes an exciting time is ahead of us all.

And that brings me to you lot. Now that you're brought up to speed, it's time to figure out what you will do with your budding career as an official Pokémon trainer! Perhaps you'll embark on the time honored tradition of the Sinnoh League, eventually challenging Champion Dawn for her title! Maybe you'd like to undertake the possibility of taking to the stage to become a world famous Pokémon Contestant, acquiring various ribbons as you travel the region. Do you want to catch them all? Maybe you don't have the slightest clue what you actually plan to do with your future, and that's just fine too. If there's anything we've learned in the world of Pokémon, it's that any dream can be obtained as long as you believe in the power of yourself and your companions!

Rules​

1. Show respect to your fellow players. Don't use their character or anything of the sort without permission.

2. While learning moves and catching a Pokémon is free game, evolution needs to be checked by the GM. Just shoot me a DM here on PC, or hit me up on Discord. If your Pokémon requires an item to evolve, such as a Fire Stone, and your character already has it in their possession, then feel free to evolve it whenever.

3. This RP is rated T. As a result, this means things such as violence, romance, and stronger language are allowed, but please keep it to a respectable level to match this rating. No amount of outright gore, like someone getting a head ripped off or on-screen sexual acts. Stronger langauge like a "damn" or "hell" are acceptable as well.

4. Obey all the regular rules of the RP section, as well as all general rules of The Pokécommunity forum as a whole.

5. No duplicate starters will be allowed, so if you want a specific pokémon to be your starter mention it in the OOC thread before making your SU to avoid people getting their hopes up. Do be aware that nothing is stopping someone from competing against you for that pokémon regardless. There are no reservations either.

Chapter 1: Route 202

​

It's a bright and sunny morning on Route 202. A short, but winding path, this route has become quite renown in the Sinnoh region for being the road that many budding trainers begin their journey on to pursuit their dreams. The route is filled with hearty pine trees and lush, green grass, both of which are just brimming with all sorts of Pokémon to study, battle, or perhaps even catch and add to one's team. As if the prospect of these magnificent creatures wasn't enough, the route is also known to contain many trainers who might be eager to wet their whistles with an intense Pokémon battle. Of course, most of these trainers rarely have anything stronger than a basic Starly or Bidoof... However, it's not the power of the Pokémon's strength that matters, but rather the strength of their heart and the bond they share with their trainers! Despite all of this, Route 202 is quite the peaceful spot. It's the perfect place to begin one's journey!​

Missions:​

There are six missions to be completed on this route. They may be completed either on one's own or through a JP, whichever you prefer! Remember, that if you find yourself in a JP that's just not progressing, there always is that other option as well. Completing a mission will always yield a reward for your trainer to make use of at some point throughout the journey. These rewards could be medicine, a special item, or perhaps a unique Poké Ball. Of course, you're not forced to take any of the missions presented in this section. If you would rather make one of your own to complete or just do a basic post of travel, then by all means feel free. You may still receive a reward for doing a custom mission. My only request is that you check with me before receiving the reward to make sure it's a reasonable one. When claiming a mission, please use the OOC topic to make your claim.​

Mission 1:​

The local Pokémart was expecting their new shipment of Poké Balls to come in at 9:00 AM. Well… 9:00 AM was two hours ago, and still no Poké Balls. Did something happen to the delivery man? What if he's lost, or hurt somewhere? Or… maybe he's just slacking off. Still, someone should probably go look for him.

Reward: 300 Pokédollars + 1 Great Ball​

Mission 2:​

A horde of Patrat have started digging up Miss Martha's flower beds. Think you can chase them off while Martha replants her prized flowers?

Mission 3:​

Gabby and Ty, fresh from Hoenn, are just dying to get a look at this new region's champs-in-the-making, and want to give one or two lucky graduates their on screen debut.

A flock of Starly are looking more than a little distressed. It seems a baby has fallen from her nest during a recent rainstorm, and is trapped under a fallen tree. While she seems mostly unharmed, the Starly are not strong enough to lift the tree up long enough for the baby to get out.

Mission 5:​

Bug Catcher Arnie is hot on the trail to set himself above all the other bug catchers in the area! His plan? To track down an elusive Butterfree that he's seen fluttering about the route. Of course, he knows that he might need a little help to successfully catch it. Arnie has managed to scrouge up enough money to get whoever lends him some aid a nice reward. Plus, there's always bragging rights that you helped to take down a fully evolved Pokémon.

Mission 6:​

Some wild Rattata have been causing grief for the local bakery, Rachel's Bake Shoppe. Each night, they manage to slip in and help themselves to a nice meal of freshly baked, fluffy bread. Maybe someone should offer their services to chase off these annoying pests?

A cool breeze teased Silvana's exposed legs as she looked out over the forrested route, curious yet anxious as to what might await her in the tall grass. More importantly though, she'd been made aware of something rather important going on. A missing shipment of pokeballs? That sounded rather serious... What if they'd encountered a wild pokemon and gotten stuck somewhere? Wild pokemon had no need for pokeballs though, which meant the shipment was probably still safe if it was out there. Maybe she could just go find it and earn herself a pretty penny! She'd need it, if she were going to afford to take care of herself. She had some serious concerns about that small detail now that she was out on her own. As much as she'd love to dedicate all of her time to chasing dreams of magic, she doubted she'd find anything out on this lonely route. Better to think of her stomach and her wallet, as she never knew when she was going to have to pay to continue on her journey or afford some artifact. "What do you think, Warle..? Should we go out and have a look around to see if we can't find anything?" Silvana asked somewhat hesitantly, glancing down at the pokemon by her side. Her popplio looked up at her almost expectantly, as if it already knew where she was going with this. Without further ado, Silvana rushed off to explore a bit!

Chapter 1: Route 202 (Part 1)

Togepiiii~!

This was it. This right here is what Betty fantasized all those hours in school while doodling over her cluttered notes. Book by book the young woman had absorbed like a sponge - not that she would recall when the need arises of course.

"Hey little cutie!" The togepi flailed their tiny stub-for-arms in reply, mouth releasing an adorable raspberry. Aria was the name given to this irresistibly charming Pokémon out of a list of eccentric choices. Betty worried that the fairy type would have grown antsy after the drawn-out thinking session, but fortunately that was not the case.

Betty sported a pitch black sleeveless shirt tucked under matching beige shorts. The pokédex was worn on her wrist as well as black sneakers. Originally a periwinkle hoodie was to be worn as well, but it was folded and tucked away inside the depths of her pikachu backpack. Good call too, for the weather was too gorgeous! Feeling the breeze gently tickle her exposed skin reminded Betty of the freedom she was suddenly given. No more parents deciding her next step.

The salty scent of Sandgem Beach added to the beauty of the scenery she was taking in. Aria gazed at the landscape beyond, the embrace to her trainer's chest aiding her in this view. "Behold! Our first journey! Together no less. And excitiiiiiing!"

A sketchbook and art supplies had been bought for this journey, now sitting within her bag. The intention is to sketch every Pokémon she stumbles upon alongside notes and chicken scratch. Like a personal diary Betty would keep track of her progress, albeit without the sappy pages consisting of poured emotions.

"Yeeessssss!" Betty sang in glee, unable to withhold her excitement. So much that she didn't move an inch. Yet. Instead she mentally rewinded time to the moment her starter was given.

The Togepi was received with much gratitude. Not only was she a darling, but if memory serves right the species is riddled of myths telling of good luck and fortune. It elated Betty, who welcomed her new friend with open arms. A quick check of her newly acquired pokédex unearthed the egg's moveset and ability for future reference.

Memory lane ended with a slight gasp upon the realization that Togepi hadn't been sketched yet. Preposterous! "Oh I almost forgot to draw you." Aria glanced up at her trainer with beady eyes. "Silly me. I hope you don't mind touching the grass for a bit?" She set down the togepi on a clear patch of grass before unloading her tools. No time was wasted as she flipped open her sketchbook and found a comfortable spot beneath her. "Ready?"

The starter gave a puzzled look in return, eyes shifting from Betty to the book. "It will only be for a second... don't worry, I'll try to do this quick." Carefully drawn lines danced along the white canvas, coming to life with the help of her soft hands. But it didn't last long. Aria had dashed over to Betty, arms attempting to hold on to her trainer's moving arm. This surprised Betty, who couldn't help but awe upon witnessing Aria's concerned expression.

"Okay okay, this can waaaait," she sweetly replied, giving in to the charm. Togepi let out a small leap in joy. "You're just sooo cute! Yes you aaaaare! Yes you are!" she cooed, rubbing noses against an ecstatic, giggling togepi.

It lasted only a minute before she returned Aria to her chest. "Oh man I swear you're going to kill me with that freaking cuteness. I swear."

At last they march forward into the route, unaware of the journey that lies ahead.​

Josef walked through the winding path with the warmth of the rising sun against his skin. He'd gone along this route a number of times before with his parents, usually before they headed off to work. There was a bakery along the way which a friend of the family's ran along with her daughter and husband. Josef's parents would often come home in the afternoon with a number of reduced sweets and breads from the bakery, and every morning they'd all stop in together for a quick and fresh meal.

However, in the past couple of weeks they'd stopped frequenting the business for reasons that Josef didn't yet understand. The boy figured that it was due at least in part to the fact that his schooling was almost over, but he felt that there had to be something else behind it otherwise they'd still be getting the reduced goods later in the day.

Josef walked down the path, watching as other trainers got into battles with wild Pokemon and then each other. He could tell straight away that some of the trainers were better than others, but what he couldn't figure out is if it was just due to them hanging around this location too long or if it was actually their natural skill. The boy stopped in the middle of the path several times, watching and staring at the tall, flowing grass which held a number of unknown Pokemon. It only just began to sink in that his journey had finally started. This was the beginning of his life-changing journey through the Sinnoh region. This is what his parents had uprooted their entire lives for.

Josef continued to walk along the path, wondering if all the supplies that he'd packed would be enough for the journey or not. He pulled his backpack around and hung it from his chest, going through its contents as he moved along. After taking inventory and insuring that all was well, the boy pulled out an old-fashioned map from his bag and unfolded it, taking in well over twenty different marks that his parents had put on it in black marker and over a dozen which he'd made with a blue ink. Each of the black marks represented a different culinary location that he should stop in on, while the blue indicated various clothes outlets. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to afford to buy as many clothes as he once could on his current budget, but he'd be damned if he didn't at least make an effort to check all of the trendiest places out.

It had been nearly half an hour since Josef began to travel along Route 202 before he realized just how slow he was actually moving. As he'd been going through his bag and reading his map, his pace had slowed to a halt. He'd barely made any progress at all, but was lucky that he'd not gone too far ahead as the bakery he'd intended to visit was already a short ways behind him. The boy put everything back in its place and then swung his bag back onto his back before jogging over to Rachel's Bake Shoppe.

As Josef approached the entrance to Rachel's shop, he noticed a sign hanging above the door. In bold, red lettering the sign read, 'Closed' and below it, scribbled hastily with a pen it read, 'Out Of Stock'. The boy's eyebrow raised in confusion, but he tried the door nonetheless. As expected, it was locked tight. Josef walked around to the back of the building, knowing that during business hours Rachel would keep the back door unlocked for her husband to come in whenever he transferred over from his first job. As he thought, there was a piece of cardboard shoved into the back door where the lock was located, ensuring that it didn't latch until Rachel wanted it to.

"Rachel?" Josef called out as he walked through the back of the bakery. The boy looked at the boxes all around, seeing massive tears in a number of them and neat little piles of all the various ingredients spread across the floor. The place had never looked so dirty and yet so clean at the same time.

"Josef, is that you? What are you doing in here, didn't you read the sign on the front door?"

"Well yeah, but... if the back door was unlocked then I knew you'd be in here. It's been a couple of weeks since I've been in so I just wanted to check in and see if you had anything new before I headed out on my journey."

A sigh came from a short ways into the restaurant. Josef continued walking through the maze-like stacks of boxes, bags and refrigerators. As the boy came out into the entry area, he found Rachel sitting on the floor with her back against the booth where the register sat. The woman looked sad, all covered in flour and cocoa and with a defeated look upon her face as her glazed-over eyes lazily rose to meet Josef's chest.

"No. No... there's nothing left here... I'm just waiting..."

"Waiting? For what? Shouldn't you be baking?"

"What's the use anymore? Those monsters just keep coming back. I can't make anything in advance without them stealing it away from me. Even if I could, they just tear up the ingredients. A few days I just opened up in the afternoon, baking what I could and hoping for the best. But... even if I could keep that up, I'd never meet ends meet... and there's those damned monsters! They're like a plague... they just won't stop coming back... my life is ruined. I don't know what I'm going to tell my husband."

"Monsters? What are you talking about? I don't really understand what's going on, but if there's something I can do to help then just let me know."

"No... no, I don't think there is. Those beasts, they're... I called the police, but they said that they couldn't really do anything unless I was here when it happened. Of course, when I tried to come in and catch them in the act they just ran away before I could call anyone."

"So what, they're a bunch of kids trying to sabotage you? But why?"

"No, not kids. Pokemon. A whole pack of Rattata. It wouldn't normally be a problem, but there's some kind of outside force that has rallied them all together. They're more organized than ever before. I used to have issues with one or two of them at a time, but now there's just... dozens of them... I don't know what to do."

"What if I took care of them? I just graduated from the trainer academy, it'd be the perfect way to test my abilities out."

"I couldn't possibly ask you to do such a thing."

"Hey, it's no problem. You've done so much for my family in the past, it's only right that I repay the debt now. Then you'll be able to get everything back up and running and my parents can come in for your sweets again."

Rachel smiled and then slowly rose to her feet. "Well, I'd really appreciate it if you don't mind. Once you're done, I'll treat you and that Pokemon at your waist to a nice little meal."

"It's a deal then." Josef smiled and then looked around the store for a few seconds. "So then... what should we do until tonight?"

Rachel shook her head. "I've got things under control here. And actually, I have a pretty decent idea about where this pack of rats might be right now. The outsider in their group has changed up their sleeping schedule for these night raids, so you should be able to slip in undetected and wreak some havoc before they ever know what's really going on. And really, I don't think you'll need to take out all of them, just scare them into scattering and then take out their leader. You've got Pokeballs, right? Even if you don't really want the thing, I'd appreciate it if you could capture him and then just release him somewhere else at least."

"Well, I'll see what I can do."

Rei smiled brightly as a gentle breeze blew through her hair. After three long and seemingly endless years, the Alolan girl had finally managed to acquire her trainer's license. It was hard to believe that this moment was finally here, but there she was. One small step was all that stood between her and Route 202, where her journey to take on the Sinnoh League and prove the true strength and tenacity of water type Pokémon would finally begin. Just the very thought of all the dynamic battles and exciting challenges that awaited ahead was enough to give her chicken skin. She had learned all sorts of things at the Sandgem Pokémon Academy. Now, it was truly time to put her skills to the test.

"Of course, it wouldn't even possible to do this if I didn't have you by my side," Rei said, glancing down at the single Poké Ball she held in her left hand.

The ball-like capsule held her first Pokémon. It was sort of a gift that was given to her by Professor Cedar... well, her and all the other graduates of the academy this year. Each student was given a choice of a Pokémon to accompany them on their journey across the region, to help them obtain whatever goals they might have had in mind to pursuit during their journey across the Sinnoh region. For Rei, this was a very difficult challenge to make in some regards. While the girl knew that there was only one obvious choice to pick from in regards to typing, that didn't mean that choosing just what kind of water Pokémon would be assisting her throughout her adventure would be. After all, there were so many good choices to make! In the end, Rei had managed to spend so long mulling over her choice that she ended up being the last one to actually leave and set out for Route 202.

"I think I made the best choice though... I can just feel it!" Rei exclaimed. She could feel her excitement beginning to build up once more, her grip tightening on the Poké Ball in her hand. "Oh... I can't wait anymore! I have to meet you right now!"

Without further delay, the girl tossed the Poké Ball high into the air. The capsule-like device snapped open, emitting a bright beam of light as a small, blue creature resembling a penguin took shape in front of her. The Pokémon slowly opened his eyes, taking a look around him curiously as Rei watched intensely. Slowly, the Piplup glanced up and took notice of the trainer who was so exciting at this point that she could most likely pop.

"Hey there, little guy! Nice to meet ya!" Rei greeted, quickly dropping down to the Piplup's level. The penguin Pokémon was a little startled, but he easily managed to regain his composure. The girl extended her hand forward, as if offering the Pokémon a handshake. "My name's Rei and starting today, we're gonna be partners!"

The Piplup stared up at Rei intently, his eyes narrowing as if he was examining the girl intently to gauge a proper opinion of her. He remained completely silent, only for a moment or two, before a bright and cheery chirp slipped from his beak. Without further hesitation, he extended his petite flipper into the girl's hand. Rei visibly sighed in relief, delighted that she seemed to pass the inspection that her new Pokémon partner was giving her. She shook the Piplup's flipper, therefore cementing their partnership in her mind.

"This is gonna be so cool! I can tell we're gonna work great together, ya know!" Rei exclaimed. She quickly stood up, bringing a hand to her chin as she looked down at the Pokémon. "Of course, you need a name. I mean, calling you Piplup just won't do... And I think I got just the name! How about... Tuna?!"

The newly dubbed Tuna stared up at his trainer, a somewhat... less than enthusiastic look graced his features. It was something that seemed to go completely unnoticed by the trainer however, as she wasted no time in scooping the penguin Pokémon up into her arms and eagerly took those first steps onto Route 202. In her mind, all of this was adding up to the beginning of a great adventure. And she was positively pumped to see what would be in store for them next!

The Bats and the Frees

​

René stepped onto the roadway making up route 202 and finished off the last bit of his coffee, grimacing at the taste. It was bad enough that Sinnoh seemed to lack the great amount of coffee shops that Kalos had, but his drink going cold didn't help the taste in the slightest. Despite the poor start to his day he still had to keep up his enthusiasm. After all, he was going to be a champion one day, and being so negative about everything would just make him look bad.

His new buddy also made it difficult to be a grump. The little Zubat, whom he lovingly dubbed Roux, ended up being quite the ball of joy. For a creature lacking both eyes and a tail she sure was bright-eyed and bushy tailed. She had quickly found out that her favorite part of René seemed to be his hat, as she spent most of her time curled up inside it atop his hair. Occasionally she would pop out to nuzzle against him, usually signaling she wanted something, even if it was just attention.

Yeah, nothing would go wrong! This was the start to a brand new René. Nothing could take him down now!

"Hey, mister," a young voice shouted from behind René. "Your Pokémon looks really strong! Think you can help me catch one?"

Ah, youthful enthusiasm. How René hated how kids automatically think they're you're best friend. His day now dampened by overly-enthusiastic children more than coffee (Roux was an exception. It was cute when she did it), he turned to whoever had the gall to request a random stranger catch them a Pokémon.

"There's a Butterfree out in the trees," the young boy dressed in bug catching gear said, "but it's too strong to just toss Pokéballs at it."

Well... A strong Pokémon? Might as well put what he learned to the test.

"So, they're off in that direction?" Josef stood at the edge of a wooded area, staring at the line of flour footprints beneath him.

"That's right. I traveled in there myself the other day, but I don't have any Pokemon to fight them with. I tried going to the police, but like I said, they wouldn't do anything unless the Pokemon were in the act of ransacking my bakery."

"Any idea how many there might be? I doubt my Deino will have much trouble with them if they're asleep, but I think a guesstimate would help me to be prepared just in case."

"I don't really know. Maybe... somewhere between twelve and fifteen, not counting the outsider. They had been a relatively peaceful pack until that other one came along. I'd left out stale bread every so often for them to eat off of when the harvest wasn't too good. Me and the Rattata minded our own business for the most part and got along just fine, so I'd rather not cause them too much trouble especially if they've got babies in there."

"Alright." Josef pulled the Pokeball from his belt and gripped it tightly in his hand. "I suppose I'll head on in and see for myself then."

"Be careful, Josef. You may be a trainer, but you've still only just graduated. I'd hate to be the reason for you getting hurt so early on in your adventure."

"No worries." Josef turned and smiled at Rachel as he took his first step through the trees. "I'm more than capable of handling myself." Josef brought his attention back to the forest and the trail of prints leading further into it. "Guess I'll get to see what this Deino can really do."

Josef followed the trail that the Rattata had made for nearly five minutes before he saw a clearing only a short ways ahead of him. The boy crouched down and crept up to the edge of the trees, peering between them as he looked into the open area. He'd found the pack with little effort, but their numbers were a deal greater than what he'd anticipated. It seemed that there was actually two families that had joined together, and eggs had been laid all around.

The boy scanned the area for the Pokemon which he thought could be this outsider, but with so many of them around he could hardly begin to tell. The fresh trainer smiled and then looked down at his Pokeball, an idea brewing in his head. Josef pressed the button on the ball, causing it to grow into its full form. Pulling his arm back like a crank, Josef launched the ball out into the clearing.

"Go, Rouge!"

Several of the Rattata instantly perked up, while others remained groggy and slow. Deino burst free from his ball in a blinding light, the act of which caused a few of the rats to flee instantly.

"Guess we'll have to shake them up a little more than that, huh? Rouge, use Dark Pulse!"

The Pokemon tilted its head back and let loose a ray of circular rings made up of a dark energy. The attack hit a few of the Rattata, causing them to jump up and run off out of fear while others merely snarled and took a defensive stance. Rouge began spinning in circles, throwing up a cloud of dust around him as the attack bore into the ground around him. The Rattata squinted their eyes, trying their best to see through the screen that the Deino had created to no avail. It would be several seconds before the dust settled, which meant that Josef had the chance to make another attack.

"Rouge, use Dragon Rage!"

Though Josef had another chance to let Rouge attack, the smokescreen had affected both parties. The Deino already had trouble seeing due to the tufts of hair which covered his eyes, so the dust did him no favors as he tried to take advantage of the moment. The Pokemon fired off the move, only to have it fly high over the Rattatas' heads and into the trees beyond, causing one of them to crack and fall over. As the tree fell, a few of the Rattata that were left quickly rushed over to where it seemed likely to impact and braced themselves to bear its weight.

Josef, curious as to why the Pokemon had sacrificed themselves, started to edge around the clearing while remaining in the safety of the trees which surrounded it. The Rattata which had surrounded Rouge had now dwindled to number only three, but the dust had finally cleared and it was their turn to strike.

The Pokemon launched a ferocious barrage of attacks at the Deino, more than making up for the extra strike that their opponent had failed to capitalize on. Rouge toppled over backwards as it was struck with hit after hit, and struggled to get back up as it elongated its neck in search of its trainer.

"Dei! Dei!" Rouge turned, its body bruised from the numerous attacks it had just received. "No! Deino!"

"You're right! I'm sorry! Deino, strike back at them with your own Tackle!"

The Pokemon nodded and then rushed at the nearest Rattata, striking them with its body and causing both to fall over. Rouge struggled back to its feet, standing triumphantly over the Rattata it had just knocked out. "Deino!" The Pokemon cried out, excited about having won its first battle.

"Don't get cocky just yet, Rouge. There's still two more!"

As Josef had managed to reach the fallen tree, he witnessed the Rattata protecting a nest of eggs which they'd apparently only just lain. The boy started to walk out of the safety of the treeline, hoping to help the Pokemon protect their children when a Pokemon cried out from the other edge of the clearing.

"Raaat!" The cry echoed all throughout, causing the other Pokemon to stop and turn their heads.

The dark-skinned Rattata which was now very easily recognizable as the outcast slowly stepped down from a pedestal of trash which the others had laid out for it. The Pokemon's eyes slowly scanned the clearing as it walked, making contact with each and every other Rattata and causing them to flee as it did so.

"So, you're the head honcho then, huh?" Josef walked out into the clearing, stepping up behind Rouge to offer the injured Pokemon his support. "Think you can really take us on by yourself?"

"Rat-tat-ta." The Pokemon spoke with each step that it took, methodically and carefully closing the distance between itself and the duo in front of it. "Rat. Rat-tat-a. Tat. Tat. Ta."

"I don't understand a thing you're saying, but you've been bothering a friend of mine. Which means, regardless of what you think or what your intentions are, you have to be stopped."

The Rattata took up a defensive stance and began to glow as its eyes narrowed.

"Trying to finish this in one strike are you? Well, two can play that game. Deino, use Focus Energy."

Rouge nodded with a grunt, and began to glow similarly to the Rattata.

"Rat-tat-a. Rat. Rat-tat-a."

"Whatever you said, I'm sure it was something cool. It's a shame that I don't know what it was. Regardless, I think we've both talked enough." Josef pulled an empty and unused Pokeball from his pocket and pressed the button in the center of it. "Rouge, use Tackle!"

The Deino rushed at the Rattata, throwing his whole body at the Pokemon as it rushed forward to do the same. The two Pokemon clashed and then fell to the ground, their bodies in a tangle. Josef rushed forward with the ball in his hand and ready to throw. Several seconds passed before Rouge began to move his head ever so slightly.

"Thank goodness. I'm so glad you're okay." Josef squatted down and pulled the Pokemon apart, noting that the Rattata was clearly out cold. "What do you say we finish up what we came here to do, eh Rouge?"

The Deino nodded and then sat on its hind legs as Josef pressed the empty Pokeball up against the Rattata's head.

BETTY DELACROIX CROSS

Chapter 1: Route 202 (Part 2)

​

The walk was comforting for Togepi, who enjoyed the warmth emanating from Betty. She was the happiest Pokémon in the world with her nice trainer and whatnot. Both somber and spine-chilling stories had reached Togepi in her lifetime, hence her content with the treatment she has so far received.

Meanwhile Betty hummed her way through the winding route as a means to pass time, but not without simple chit chat here and there to her new, and only, companion.

"So can you understand me? I always wondered if Pokémon could understand us when we couldn't understand them, you know?" Betty began a conversation. Aria glanced up in curiosity with a charming smile. "Eh, but I'm going to assume you do. I mean, if you don't then I hope you don't mind hearing my voice too much... I kinda like talking to myself a lot. Helps me a bit really. Don't you?"

They conversated back and forth; Betty with her winding paragraphs and the togepi with its cries and charm. It was perfect for Betty to find a living life form that doesn't mind her ongoing conversations. In fact, she's already beginning to grow attached to the fairy. Furthermore her cuteness always melted Betty's heart.

However Betty's ambition began to kick in upon the sight of a nearby trainer battle. It enticed her to dip her toes into the world she had only studied for, yet never put to practice. Fortunately for Togepi Betty was knowledgeable in the basics. Unfortunately she lacked any experience.

The notion was brought up minutes after passing a closed bakery. Honestly Betty would have been up for a sweet, but their "closed" sign quickly soured her mood. Instead she hoped to kill the urge to eat bread via training. After all, seeing Aria in action could help with bonding.

"So... I know I just met you and you met me, but I think we should train like the others. Gotta get strong so that we don't get left behind now," Betty suggested as she strayed from the paved path and to the wilderness. Aria gave Betty a puzzled look. Pi?

"Don't worry, we'll start small and easy... I remember that fairy types are strong against dark, dragon, and... fighting! Yes, fighting! Whew, almost forgot the basic stuff already." The trainer continued to ramble on, to which the fairy type didn't seem to mind. "...no poison or steel for you though, unless we're feeling super awesome. Strong too." Not convinced of her hesitant responses, Betty clumsily pulled out a small notebook riddled with notes whilst holding her starter on the other.

The togepi cooed in comfort as she observed her trainer analyze the chicken scratch. "Okie dokie, ready Aria? We got this we got this," Betty asked, voice soaked with determination. Aria giggled in glee, piiiiii~♡

Betty caressed her fairy before gently setting her down. They walked towards a small collection of pine trees devoid of trainers that could intervene in the training. Togepi has meanwhile been exerting herself in keeping up with her master's human pace. One mere step for Betty translated to half a dozen, or more, for Togepi.

Regardless they met their destination. To Betty's fortune there was a bug resting on a high branch, perfect to start a brawl. "Okay... ready?" Her togepi waddled to the front of her, eyes scanning the area. "See that bug up there?" Betty mumbled as she knelt down, finger pointing to the victim. "Let's start! Metronome!"

And Aria didn't waste any time. She took a step forward and lifted her glowing arms as commanded. With a small gesture she let out a charming cry, stirring the caterpie awake. Betty rose up and observed as silver sparkles forming a faint ring hovered above the bug. They grew in size until they lost their glow, revealing them as gray boulders. It was Rock Tomb.

The caterpie screeched as they fell upon them, snapping the branch off its place and on to the ground beneath. Dirt and dust covered the scene. "Well that was cool as heck. This is the first time I've seen metronome in action," she commented on the swaying togepi's success. Now that the caterpie is down I can maybe attack? But I don't know where it is yet and-

The bug shot out from the dirt and tackled the unsuspecting fairy, who tumbled over to Betty, all while the trainer blurted out "Ah?!" in surprise. "Dazzling Gleam, now!"

Aria rolled over to its standing position, tears already trailing down its cheeks. This alarmed Betty.

She no longer wished to continue, emotionally torn by the shedding of her starter's tears. "Wait wait! Stop! It's okay we don't have to continue!" she rapidly intervened, body sliding inbetween the pokémon. The caterpie was taken aback, red antennae instinctively twinkling to life. Betty scooped Aria from the ground, soft hands wiping away the tears. "Oh no no no it's okay it's okay I have you now." Aria began to sniffle, embarrassed. "I'm so sorry... did that hurt too much? Did you get scared?" The fairy glanced up to Betty, face a sniveling mess. Aria was aware she had little to no tolerance for pain, yet it was humiliating for her trainer to witness. Pain wasn't the reason she was sobbing anymore.

Without warning a stench overwhelmed the duo. It emanated from Caterpie's glowing antennae as it made a run for the nearest bush. Both Aria and Betty gagged, immediately leaving the scene.

They returned to the route's paved road gasping for fresh air. "Okay so... I guess we gotta start even smaller," Betty mused. Togepi has meanwhile calmed down somewhat, now hiccuping. "No no don't worry about it, I'm not mad cutie pie... more like I feel horrible for making you cry," she admitted with a pout. The girl then gave her togepi a heartwarming smile, lifting them above her stature. The fairy was back to feeling hunky-dory, albeit with the last batch of tears still clinging to her eyes. "I guess we should... hm. This is hard." She lowered Aria to her chest to resume the previous embrace, much to Aria's delight. Piiiiiii~!

"How about we find an even weaker or easier target? I mean... yeah, doesn't hurt to try I suppose," Betty murmured to herself, monologuing. With less energy than before the pair headed for a new area - a group of bushes and pine trees seemed promising. But it appeared to contain quite the activity... there were plenty of Starly congregating in the vicinity, their squawks and cries overshadowing the commotions taking place on the route.​

"...Well, that was easy!" Silvana remarked in very mild bemusement. Her brows furrowed for a moment as she quietly questioned why anyone was paying her for this, and then the answer popped into mind almost immediately.

Their time was worth a lot more than hers.

That demeaning realization aside, she found herself face to face with an abandoned cart. It was stuck on a hill and looked like it had been intended to be pulled by a pokemon. The cart itself looked like it still contained the shipment, not that she had been given enough information to confirm whether a few things might be missing. This just raised one... important question. "How are we supposed to get this back?" Silvana asked no one in particular, The heavily laden cart mocked her with its silence, its design giving her the answer. The young lady's frustration only worsened as she stared at the yoke. Her glance shifted to the popplio at her side, who quickly shifted her gaze away in refusal. A defeated sigh escaped Silvana.

Several long moments of procrastinating later, she had strapped herself onto the cart and was beginning to try and tug it free. ...It didn't budge. She came to the sudden realization that it had been abandoned for a reason, and as much as she dragged her dignity through the dirt with each furious step she tried to take she found herself accomplishing little more than embarrassing herself. "...Well, I hope you're proud of me Mom. I grew up to be a monster of burden." Silvana softly lamented in a defeated tone as she tried to catch her breath. Moments later, the sound of rushing water caught her ears. Huh? Well that was odd. Turning about though, she caught something ingenious.

Her popplio was attacking the ground near the wheels! A mixture of water gun and pound were being used to upturn, shift and flatten the soil, as well as dislodge the various rocks in her way. "You know how to do that all on your own, huh?" Silvana asked, decidedly a bit surprised. She hadn't even needed to issue a command! In response, Warle stopped what she was doing and gave Silvana a strange, almost knowing look accompanied by what sounded distinctly like pokemon laughter. "...What's with that??" Silvana asked in response, somehow feeling teased in spite of having understood exactly none of what was 'said'. However, she received no response and Warle went back to her work. Eh. It was probably nothing!

...A good half hour of work and some struggles later, and Silvana finally managed to pull the cart free! With a lurch and a strenuous looking tug, Silvana managed to jerk the wagon forward along the road.

"Great Job, Warle! Now all we have to do is--mmmm..." Silvana began, only to abruptly trail off as she remembered getting this thing back was still going to suuuuuuck. She had strong legs, but was lacking a bit in the upper body strength department. Pulling this thing back home would leave her sore and exhausted in many an exotic place. But hey--she finally felt like she earned that ... pocket change! The great ball helped, a lot. She'd never held one before, and the excitement was enough to bring a smile to her face after it was all said and done.

"That went a little bit smoother than expected, wouldn't you say?" Josef stood up, placing the newly captured Pokemon on the belt at his waist before patting the Deino's head. The boy smiled as he rubbed his hand against the Pokemon, wondering if he should return it to its ball or wait until after they'd received their reward.

"Josef! That was amazing!" Rachel walked out from behind a tree that she'd been using to hide, a smile spread across her face as she approached the boy and his Pokemon. "I never would have imagined you could have gotten so powerful, and so soon after becoming a trainer! Those Rattata didn't stand a chance against you, despite all the trouble that they'd been giving me the past couple of weeks. It kind of makes me feel ashamed, to be honest."

"Hey, don't worry about it. It's what I've been training at the academy to do anyways. And... well... it didn't all work out that perfectly."

"What do you mean? You scared all of them off and even beat their leader! How much more perfect could it have been?"

Josef slowly walked over to the felled tree and then fondled with the Pokeball at his waist, releasing the Rattata from it so that it could stand beside him. "Your friends are..."

The Rattata looked all around itself with a confused look upon its face before finally meeting Josef's lowered gaze. "Rat-tat? Rat?"

Josef nodded. I still don't get what you're saying, but yet, you do me. This tree... you can hear it, can't you?"

The Pokemon's ears perked up and its eyes widened, having only just realized what was going on. The Rattata lunged at the tree. The Pokemon's mouth opened wide as it sank its teeth into the bark and began to viciously tear away at the trunk. As the Rattata gnawed its way into the tree, it formed a small hole just barely big enough for its own body.

"Rat! Rat-tat!"

The Pokemon looked up at Josef and then quickly ran circles around the hole that it had created. From within the hole, another noise echoed, something much more faint, quiet and weak.

"R-rat... tat... a..."

Rachel slowly walked over, confused as to what was going on until she heard the soft cry of the Pokemon trapped beneath the tree. "Oh my God, that's horrible." The woman clasped her hands over her mouth.

"Rachel, go run and get a Nurse Joy from town. There's going to be a lot of injured Pokemon that are going to need immediate aid."

The baker nodded, quickly turning on her heel and bolting off back in the direction from which she'd came. Josef sighed, peering down into the hole that the captured Rattata had created.

"You're not such a bad Pokemon, you know? Your methods were wrong, but... you were just trying to take care of your new family, weren't you?"

The Pokemon ignored him, continuing its circling of the hole it had made while poking its head in periodically with a whimper.

Five minutes had slowly passed with nothing being done as the boy and Pokemon waited for Rachel to return with help. Josef was quickly growing irritated with how long it was taking for the baker to come back. The boy started shaking his leg vigorously, his hands fidgeting and sweating as he attempted to busy himself all the while counting the seconds that passed by.

"Josef! Go ahead! We're almost there!"

The boy's head snapped to the side, looking to where the voice was coming from. Off in the distance, Josef could see Rachel running back through the trees alongside Nurse Joy and a Machoke which was carrying tray tables in each hand.

Wanting to waste no more time, Josef shot his hand through the hole and grabbed several of the Rattata which had just been prematurely hatched from their eggs. The boy removed his hand from the tunnel and put the Pokemon on the ground beside him before quickly diving back in for more. By the time Joy and Rachel had finally reached Josef, the boy had already pulled up over two dozen baby Rattata.

"Oh my goodness," Joy began, tenderly handling each and every Pokemon as she moved them from the ground to one of the carts that she'd brought with her. "This is terrible, how could this happen?"

"It's my fault," Rachel whispered. "The Rattata had been raiding my bakery for weeks, but the Police wouldn't do anything about it. When Josef came by to check on me, I threw him into the thick of it, bribing him with whatever sweets he could want as long as he could get rid of the Rattata... I just... I never meant for this to happen. I just wanted to scare them a little and have their leader relocated..."

"It's alright, you don't have to beat yourself up over this." Joy took a moment to stop what she was doing and put her hand on Rachel's shoulder, comforting her with a smile. "They can still be saved at this point, but if they'd been left alone under that tree, things could have been much worse."

"There's no time to talk right now," Josef said, glaring at the two women as he lay arm deep in the tree. "There's a few left in here, but they're adults. They're... trapped, beneath the weight of the tree. I don't think they're conscious either. Their bodies are firm and unresponsive, but they're definitely Rattata. I need that Machoke to come over and lift the tree for me so that I can pull them out before they're crushed."

Nurse Joy nodded. "I understand. Machoke, go and give that boy whatever help he needs! We have to save every one of these Pokemon!"

"Maaa-choke!" The Pokemon lumbered over and dug its hands under the tree trunk.

Josef pulled his arm free from the hole and rolled off of it and onto the ground, taking a position between the Machoke's legs.

"Right here. There's three of them that I could feel. I'll need you to hold it up for at least five seconds, do you think you can manage that?"

"Ma!"

"Alright then." Josef took several deep breaths, readying himself for whatever he might see. "Now, lift!"

Three Hours Later​

"So, how were they?"

Josef slumped down into a booth in the corner of Rachel's bakery, his hair drenched it sweat and his clothes covered in dirt and mud. "They were fine. Joy said they'd make a full recovery."

"I see, that's good then." Rachel walked into the kitchen and came back only seconds later with a glass bottle of milk and a whole, chocolate cake. "This is... really, all that I can do to thank you right now. The bakery has still lost a lot of money, so these next few weeks will be really rough. I can't afford to-"

"Rachel, it's fine. I was happy to help, even if things took a dark turn in the end. All the Pokemon are going to be okay, so there's no need to worry. And besides, I'm more than happy to have your cake. After all, you are on my map."

The baker smiled, placing the entire cake on the table that Josef had chosen to fall in to. "Well then, I hope the three of you enjoy it."

Josef nodded, releasing both his Deino and the Rattata into the seat across from him. "I expect we will."

"By the way, what are you planning to do with that Rattata now?"

"Eh, I think I'll keep it." Josef started cutting into the cake, serving a sizable piece to both of his Pokemon. "It's not such a bad rat anyways."

"Then, do you plan to name it anything?"

"Hmmm, I hadn't really thought about it yet." Josef sliced off another small wedge of the cake and left it on the serving platter before sliding off the other half of the cake onto his own plate. "How about, Trees?"

"Trees? That's an odd choice for a name."

"I suppose, but I think it fits him just fine."

BETTY DELACROIX CROSS

Chapter 1: Route 202 (Part 3)

​

Curiosity can be described as a double-edged sword. For Betty it was the sole driving force behind scoping out the Starlys' activity. They were heading in the general direction regardless, so why not?

Togepi's bouncy nature died down upon entering the tiny area thriving with pine trees. Their ruckus distracted the fairy from her musings, black beady eyes observing the flock with awe. "Wow... look, that's... a lot of Starly," Betty noted the obvious. Aria let out a cry of agreement, sight never leaving one detail in particular. There was a concentrated area of Starly and Betty took notice of this. "What is it that you - Oh." A closer inspection revealed a tighter group of the birds surrounding an area. Some flocked about while others perched atop branches, staring down with forlorn.

The young trainer halted. Being attacked by birds wasn't on her bucket list, but analyzing what they might be unsettled by might make that happen. Togepi kept watching, eyes never parting ways. Betty carried an urgent need to fulfill this curiosity, yet a small voice inside her head stated otherwise.

Eh. Aria was mildly astonished upon Betty slipping her into the bag, but a quick bounce from the togepi pushed the bag's cover off for her to peek out of. She was itching to look at what was occurring, mouth spitting out incoherent words. Little did she know that Betty had hid her away in case of a flurry of scratches or pecks that might be given.

To their fortune no such thing occurred. Good thing too, or else Betty would have reversed her steps and never have returned, leaving them to fend for themselves. It was heartless had she known why the ruckus, but her upbringing taught her to care for herself more, as selfish as that may seem. Whether she follows such principles seems to depend solely on the pain endured.

The flock of Starly parted like the red sea for the incoming trainer. Feathers and frantic flapping obscured her vision, prompting her to stop her advancing. Once cleared a fallen tree sat in front of two Starly, one of which was flying in a frenzy around.

Piiiii?

Betty studied the fallen log with confusion, at first being unable to understand the reasoning behind their ruckus. Furthermore the panicking Starly at times flew to her face, blocking the view and startling her. "Wait wait I don't understand I... uh. Hm."

Togepi attempted to stretch, twist, and turn to see what his trainer was witnessing, but to no avail. The backpack kept her in place, but did not prevent her from stretching out. Betty knelt down in front of the fallen tree to further scrutinize it, attempting to comprehend the two birds.

Aria stretched too far and rolled out of the bag. Unlike Betty however, the togepi heard a faint cry coming from below the log. The fairy sprinted towards the source whilst calling out to her master. "You figured it out?" Betty replied, mildly surprised. "You're pretty smart." To the pokémon's dismsy they were unable to squeeze under the fallen tree. Betty caught on and rested her head on the ground, eyes peeking through the gaps through the fallen log... to see a mini Starly. It was a baby Starly.

"Oh oh oh no you poor thing, let me just..."

Betty immediately leaped up, arms stretching. "Okay... here goes." With a huff she slid her arms in between the fallen tree's branches and lifted. Aria cheered and bounced in joy upon in the sight of the tree budging. So much so that she too began to push against the tree in hopes of helping. But as soon as the way to the baby was open to the fairy they rushed right to them.

The trainer began to struggle with the tree a foot off the ground and... her arms gave out from the weight of it, a loud thud shaking the flock of birds around. The two adult Starly angrily pecked at Betty, the concept of their child possibly harmed frustrating the couple. "Hey! Wait-ow! Sorry sorry I don't know what I did I-"

Fortunately for them Togepi had long rescued the bird, the avian Pokémon resting on the fairy's crowned head. Betty took notice, relieved now that the parents halted their assault. "Oh good heavens, you saved me some pecks. How did you get the baby out of... there...?" she inquired, eyes switching from her togepi to the tree and vice versa.

A newfound sense of accomplishment and pride filled Aria. Not only did she rescue a baby, but she impressed Betty.

The birds surrounded the small hero, thankful for their heroism. Betty let out a small sigh, wishing to be acknowledged as well. In addition signs of affection, oran berries, and more "thank you's" were given to the fairy.

"Luckyyyyyy," Betty murmured under her breath.

The Bats and the Bees?

​

"Come on," the young bug catcher apparently named Alfie urged, "it's gotta be just around the corner!"

"You said that twenty minutes ago." René was starting to have his doubts about whether the kid really saw a Pokémon, or if this was just the worst set up to a robbery he had ever seen. The kid had led him on a wild goose chase through the underbrush, all at the expense of René's shoes.

"AHA! You hear that?!"

"It better not be another angry Rattata," René said with a grumble, moving in front of Alfie. If he never had to see another purple rat in his life he could probably die a happy man. Thankfully they tended to be all bluster, and sudden movements tended to scare them away. Not before headbutting your shin though.

Pushing through the brush Alfie pointed out proved to be a little trickier than it first seemed. The branches were tightly clumped and more than one flicked right back at him. The feeling of wood hitting his forehead was therefore not entirely unexpected. Unexpected until he reached up to move it and felt it was surprisingly large and round for a branch. In fact, the thing was barely smaller than a yoga ball, and a quiet buzz could be heard from within.

And then it hit him in more ways than one.

"YOU MORON! This is a Beedrill hive!" René immediately began to move backwards as fast as he could he possibly move, stumbling a little on an exposed root. Right before his eyes he noticed a rather mean looking Beedrill crawling out of the wood pulp hive, locking its many segmented eyes on René.

The Beedrill rushed at the one who disturbed his hive, large needle first. Before he could reach his target, however, a small blue blur slammed into its side. As René's eyes focused, he saw Roux flying back from the falling wasp, maintaining her balance in the air.

Idiot, are you a Pokémon trainer or what?

"Thank Roux, lets take this guy down."

The little Zubat let out a happy chirp before getting herself ready for the first attack. Flying towards the now hovering Beedrill, she bared her fangs and latched onto the bug-type's abdomen. The wasp flinched at the sudden pain before managing to knock away the Zubat. The Beedrill rushed forward, thrusting its needles at the bat Pokémon. Several blows landed, eliciting a small squeak of pain from Roux before the Beedrill flew backwards.

"Make sure he can't do that again, Supersonic!"

A eardrum rattling screech sounded from Roux, causing René and Alfie to cover their ears. The Beedrill seemed fine at first, but when it began to fly forward it began to wobble. Despite the difficulty it had maneuvering, it rushed forward for another Fury Attack. Bracing himself to see Roux get hurt yet again, René was surprised to hear a crash instead of a squeal of pain. Stealing a glance at the battlefield, he saw the Beedrill has veered heavily off course and ended up ramming a tree at full speed by accident.

"Push the advantage, Bite it!"

The nimble poison-type rushed forward with her fangs bared yet again. Before she could make contact, however, the Beedrill began retreating into the trees at full speed.

"You did it!" A shout of joy sounded next to René, and he saw Alfie rush forward with a Pokéball in his hand. Realizing he intended to chase and attempt to catch the Beedrill, René pulled back the young boy, knocking him off balance.

"What are doing that for," the kid said in protest, "we could have caught it!"

"Are you daft?!" René didn't let up his grip, and began to pull the kid away from the direction of the Beedrill. "Do you want to get lost in the forest? Because that's what's chasing random Pokémon will do!"

"It's buzzing! I could have followed that!"

"Do you know nothing about Pokémon?! Beedrills don't retreat, they fight until they collapse if their hive is on the line. The only exception is if there are other Beedrill nearby. If you want to die, go ahead and follow it, or just stand here. This area is about to be swarmed. You can catch your Beedrill then, assuming you're still alive."

That seemed to get the kid's attention, and he begrudgingly stopped trying to run in the direction of the wasp. Roux managed to find the quickest way out of the woods, and aside from a close call with some distant buzzing, no yellow could be spotted among the trees.

Out in the open the kid seemed defeated, but accepting of the situation. Grumbling a muttered "thanks", he set off, presumably for home. Roux seemed disappointed as well.

"Don't be down," René said while scratching the head of his Zubat, "who knows how strong that Beedrill was. You had him too, or else he wouldn't have ran off." Roux looked a little brighter and crawled back inside her place in his hat.

Last time I decide to help someone who doesn't even have a Pokémon catch one. They can just go to the school like the rest of us.

Chapter 2: Jubilife City

​

Despite all the cities that reside in the Sinnoh region, none are quite as recognized or admired as the city of Jubilife. Housing a television studio, the headquarters of the Hexcorp Company, and being an all around center of exploration with its three exits, the city is a constant hub of greetings and farewells. Even as the sun begins to set as our plucky group of trainers begin to arrive at its majestic, towering skyline, there is still plenty to see and do. Be wary, though. Jubilife isn't some small town like Sandgem. There are plenty of people who might try to take advantage of one's naivety. Of course, I'm sure this is nothing to worry about with such smart and savvy trainers like you, right?​

Mission 1:​

The local preschool is introducing its students to the awesomeness that is the Pokémon Trainer. For this introduction, they'd like to treat their kiddies to an authentic Pokémon battle. Perhaps some of the trainers passing through would like to help?

Mission 2:​

A local clown is making a total annoyance of himself at a local restaurant. People like to enjoy the busy sights and sounds of the city, but this unfunny joker just can't seem to take a hint. Maybe someone can point him in a direction that his... talents would prove to be more useful...? Or perhaps he just needs to have a battle to knock some sense into him and his Mr. Mime.

Mission 3:​

One of the classes from the local preschool was taking a tour of the local television studio. When it came time to leave, a roll call was held and little Mary has turned up missing! Won't someone help track her down?

Mission 4:​

Jubilife City is home to the headquarters of the Hexcorp Company! Right now, they're holding a special contest for daring trainers who think they're strong enough to take down one of their scientist's prized Porygon. It's proved itself to be quite the difficult adversary to overcome, but maybe it simply has not found a worthy opponent to truly best it. The reward is truly worth while, however. If a trainer can manage to best this powerful Porygon, they'll receive a special upgrade for their Hexcorp watch!

Mission 5:​

The local television studio is holding a contest for trainers who think their Pokémon have a little bit of stage pizzaz. This contest isn't about besting one's opponent, but rather about impressing the audience with a display of flair and showmanship. Do you have what it takes to potentially become a star?

Mission 6:​

Located in the southwest corner of the city is an old, abandoned apartment complex. According to rumors floating about the city, the apartment complex was the location of a rather gruesome murder that transpired roughly five years ago. Hex Maniac Janna is absolutely enthralled with this rumor, and wants to investigate the building to see if she can contact the spirit of a lonely girl who was supposedly murdered there years ago, in an attempt to put her spirit to rest.

A strange man has been seen around town offering people a chance to win a free Hexcorp watch if they can answer three simple questions from his clown buddies scattered across the city. The catch? This man is actually a con artist and has been managing to trick tourists out of their money and valuables once they let their guard down. Help the police track down this degenerate once and for all.

A little brat by the name of Joey has been bothering people left and right around the preschool to try and defeat his legendary, top percentage Rattata. While he has had his fair share of victories and defeats, he seems to act up rather badly if he's defeated, going as far as to prank and harass those who manage to defeat him. Help set this boy on the right path, before it's too late.

Josef walked into Jubilife City with his arms stretched out wide and his nostrils flared open. The young man took in a massive breath and then exhaled slowly as he listened to all the sounds of the busy city. It wasn't his first time in Jubilife, but there was just something about the air of a city that set it apart from anywhere else. And... to be honest, it brought back a lot of memories regarding his life in Kanto, which made him smile.

Josef's parents worked in the television studio, but they'd both requested off this day in particular to be able to see their boy off on his big adventure. His mom was a traveling reporter, while his father worked behind the scenes inside the station itself. It was unfortunate that he couldn't pay them a visit at the moment, but he was sure that he'd see at least one of them again somewhere along the way.

Josef started walking around the city, taking in all the various sights that he hadn't given the time before. The boy took a lap around Jubilife, wondering what he should do while he was here, or if he should check out anything at all. He'd wasted plenty of time with Rachel's bakery that the answer didn't seem to be something so easy to figure out. If he wasted too much time like that, it was possible that he'd end up falling behind everyone else in his class and he'd miss out on something important.

"Hmm, that watch upgrade sounds like it might be useful later on, but..."

"Agh! That's not fair, Joey! You've had your Pokemon way longer than me! Of course it's gonna be a lot stronger!"

"Heh, quit whining you baby. You lost, fair and square, so give me your lunchbox."

Josef followed the commotion, wondering what was going on. To his surprise, there was a boy in his early teens hanging around the Jubilife preschool. A small crowd surrounded the boy as he gloated over his newest conquest. A four year old fell to the ground and began to sob as he unzipped his Pikachu backpack and pulled out a lunchbox with the image of a Gengar on it. The teenager snatched the box out of the child's hands and quickly rummaged around inside of it.

"Tch. Peanut butter and honey, some diced up oran berries, and crust-less white bread. What a joke."

The teenager dropped the box to the ground and threw its contents off in the distance before beginning to stomp on the image of the Gengar.

"Hey! Cut that out!" Josef rushed up to the boy after seeing how he was behaving in front of the other children who were at least ten years younger than himself. "What do you think you're doing?"

"Huh?" Joey turned to look at the giant who was quickly closing in on him. "Ah!" The boy screamed and then pulled the lone pokeball from his belt, throwing it in the direction of Josef. The ball twirled through the air and then bounced against the ground before bursting open, revealing a Rattata with a larger than average physique.

"A battle?" Josef quickly slowed his pace to that of a brisk walk.

"Huh?" Joey straightened up upon seeing that the titan across from him had slowed his advance. The teenager brushed himself off and then smirked as he puffed out his chest, trying his best to make it seem like he was still the big man on the playground. "Yeah, a battle! You scared? My Rattata has won so many battles already, it's not even funny! It's the best of its kind; the top percent, y'know?"

"Why would I be afraid of a battle? Just a few hours ago, I fought against a whole pack of Rattata."

"Y-yeah?" Joey shook a little bit, trying to wrap his head around how anyone could beat up a whole pack of Rattata so easily. What kind of Pokemon could this guy have, he wondered. "I'm not afraid of you either! My Rattata will mop the floor with you, regardless of how many others you've beaten! I told you, my Rattata is in the top percentage of all Rattata! There's no other like it in the region! Heck, there might not even be another one like it in the whole world! Maybe it's in the top of the top percent! Hahaha!"

The boy tried to make himself out to be big and bad, but Josef could see right through him... well, over him, rather. The man closed the distance between them and could tell now, as he stood over the boy that he was shaking in his shoes. "Alright. I'll battle you, but just so that I can test something out for myself. If this Rattata really is in the top of the top percent, then maybe I should be a little bit scared."

Joey's eyes lit up as they rose to Josef's. "Of course, my Rattata's the best! Nobody can beat it one-on-one!"

"Alright then. I'll fight you with a Rattata of my own, so that I can see what percentile it falls into."

"Y-you have a Rattata too?"

"Of course. I caught it just a while ago and haven't had the chance to use it, so I really have no idea how good or bad it is. But I think now is as good a time as any to figure it out."

Joey grit his teeth. Up until now, he'd only ever gone up against really weak Pokemon that the preschoolers had managed to round up on accident and chance alone. Josef was sure to be a formidable enemy, especially if his intentions were to give the boy a dose of his own medicine. "Alright then! Let's lay it out there then! If I win, I'll take... I'll... uh, I don't really know what I want from you."

"Hmm," Josef scratched his head and thought hard. What did he have that someone else would want to fight him for? "Oh, I've got just the thing." Josef pulled his bag off his back and started to rummage around inside of it. "Here. If you win, I'll give you this slice of cake from Rachel's bakery just down the road. And if I win, you have to stop picking on preschool kids and fight more people your own age."

Joey's mouth began to water as he stared at the recently baked cake and the cute little decorations that Rachel had put on it. He wanted that cake, there was no doubt about it. However, if Josef were to win, he'd have to give up on the easy pickings around the preschool. Normally, he'd take up the offer without a second thought and come back to the preschoolers regardless of the outcome... but Josef was just, so... scary.

"I'll take you up on that bet."

Josef nodded. "Alright then. Since this is a battle to test just where my Rattata falls in terms of strength, I'll only use it in our fight. Neither one of us will use items, or let out Pokemon hold anything while they fight. This will be a battle determined simply by our Pokemon's power and our ability to direct them, okay?"

Joey nodded. "That's fine by me."

Josef nodded and then pulled the pokeball from his waist. "Let's get it on then. Trees, I choose you!"

Thief in the Big City

​

Jubilife City, now René could get back to actual civilization. He enjoyed what you could call the simpler life, but some city luxuries were sorely missed. Coffee, for one. The lack of decent coffee in Sinnoh was absolutely heretical, but the city surely had something to make up for it. While checking the map for the umpteenth time, trying to decide just what sounded closest to Kalosian brews or whether Café Islandico brewed with beans grown in Hoenn or one of the Alolan Islands, he was so rudely interrupted.

"Excuse me fine sir," the interloper said just after René met his eyes, "we're having a competition today and anyone who completes it wins a Hexcorp watch!"

"I have a watch." Raising his arm to show the man in the ill-fitting suit his actual watch, he noticed the man's obviously fake smile didn't even waver.

"Ah, but Hexcorp watches are the future of wrist accessories. Just think of all the features a nice new Hexcorp watch has over you more… ahem… traditional watch has."

Ignoring the stanger's thinly veiled insult of his watch, René carefully set his map down and took the Pokédex out of his pocket. "I have a Hexcorp Pokédex. I am certain this tool has more features than whatever overdesigned, obsolete in two years piece of tech you can offer me has."

"But what about the ease of use of a Hexcorp watch?? The man's smile was beginning to look strained under the teen's constant rebuttals. "What about when you're out in the field and need to check something immediately?"

"I pull it out of my pocket." René barely hid his contempt for the man in his voice. "This is an issue of milliseconds. If my milliseconds are so valuable you've managed to waste an awful lot of them."

"Look kid, do you want to look for the clowns or not?" The man's smile disappeared and he spoke candidly for the first time all encounter.

"Wait, there are clowns involved in this?"

"Yes, three of them."

"Hell no then."

Mutter some swears, the man finally had enough sense to walk away. A small smile crept across René's face. Returning his Pokédex to his pocket, he looked down to find the ground in front of him suspiciously empty. He just left the map there a second ago, and no one walked up to take it. It was even one of the nice ones that had their own containers to prevent it from tearing, it was too heavy to blow away.

"Hey, Roux, did you see someone take the map?"

The little zubat took off from under his hat, cocking her head a bit as if the very idea was absurd.

"Right, you can't see anything. Sorry."

Taking another look around, René spotted a fluttering piece of paper in his peripheral vision. A second glance revealed his map, firmly in the mouth of a Meowth sitting and staring at him. If a cat could look smug, this cat was absolutely pleased with itself. Just as he made eye contact with the Pokémon, it decided to bolt with his map. After a moment of shock at the obvious taunt, René began to chase after it. The last thing he wanted to do was be stuck on a journey without a map.

The Meowth was clever, managing to keep just enough distance to be seen without being slowed down. René blundered through crowded streets, his own size being a massive disadvantage in the chase. He narrowly avoided running into a large trash can being pushed out of restaurant by hitting a chain link fence, and then being surprised by the Furfrou residing on the other side of the fence. Regaining his composure, he thought the Meowth had gotten away for sure. Just ahead, however, the same Meowth was laughing at him.

Rushing after the Pokémon one last time, he turned a sharp corner and found himself in an alley with a plywood fence separating it from the other street. The thief sat atop the fence, daring him to take another step.

Thinking that he should throw something to try and scare the Meowth into dropping the map, he reached for the closest object. Clasping a Pokéball in his hand, René lined up the toss in his mind before throwing. Watching the Pokéball sailing through the air in slow motion, he could almost swear the Meowth jumped into the path of the projectile. Bursting into light, the Pokémon disappeared into the red and white ball. A few weak shakes later, the ball rested and dinged for a successful capture.

Grabbing both those items in a daze, René thought he should move to the park and piece together what just happened with his apparent new team member.

Chapter 2: Jubilife City​

The image of the infant Starly remained etched into Betty's mind. Its woes, its burning tears, ragged feathers, trembling body - and yet there was one point during it all that Betty was contemplating on walking away from the scenario. Cruel would have been the act had she done it similar to an incident years ago. There was once a baby ducklett that had failed to leap over to the sidewalk, left stranded on the car-riddled street by its mother. It cried and waddled in circles, both terrified and famished. A good soul managed to halt their vehicle in fear of running over the duckling that couldn't muster the courage to leap. Betty so happened to have been walking on the opposite sidewalk, pace slowed by the event. Other vehicles made haste, some enraged by the stopped vehicle that let out cries of horror as they missed the living creature by mere inches. Betty wanted to help the creature. Betty wanted to run over to its aid and lift it over to the sidewalk. Betty wanted to ease the driver's pain.

----

...she wanted to. And that's as far as she ventured, instead continuing her walk back to her original destination. Despite the guilt eating away at her conscious, the fear that she would make a scene, the lights, the enraged drivers, it was enough to push her away from a valiant cause.

----

A sense of regret gnawed on the trainer, embrace tightening around the unsuspecting togepi. The fairy took the squeeze as a sign of endearment, a cry of joy slipping out of their body, but it didn't capture the trainer's attention. Betty attempted to lock the memory away deep in the abyss, yet it resurfaced often.

----

Soon the route's path transformed into a small set of stairs that took one into the famed Jubilife City. Taking these steps made Betty's heart flutter and stomach drop from trepidation.

----

"Ready?" Betty breathed out, both excited and anxious. "Let's go see if we can find some food or something to snack on. Anything with some milk... mmm, brownies sound so good right now." The togepi pictured food as well - ice cream, chocolate, pancakes, waffles, cake, sweets! While Betty slowly wandered the city for bakeries Aria's food fantasies caused her stomach to rumble. To the fairy's dismay Betty didn't take notice, mind elsewhere.

----

A small cafe made its appearance not too far from where they began. Furthermore it was within seeing distance from the Pokémon Center. It was small and modest with glistening wooden floors and decorated walls. Betty left the café with a bottle of Moomoo Milk and enough bread for two, robbing her of 300 Pokédollars. Outside Betty tore a piece from the sweet bread and handed it to Aria, who happily accepted with a Togepiiiii!.

----

"Oh my god," Betty said through a mouthful of sweet sweet heaven, sipping her milk with every bite. "This is soooo good oh my - isn't it Aria?" The togepi replied with a coo as she nibbled on her piece. Betty mused on the significance of her starter's name; there was no significance. It slides out of the tongue quite nicely, but the more she used it the more unfamiliar it became. Many called their Pokémon by their species' name, Togepi in this case.

----

"Hey, Togepi, how-" Togepi interrupted with a charming raspberry, innocence and childlike demeanor endearing. Never have Betty's eyes glistened with fondness. "Awwwww you're just so CUTE!" Immediately after she glanced around, a sheepish smile on her face from the thought of being overheard.

----

Both wild and owned Pokémon wandered the city. Togepi waved at those who locked eyes with her. Some reciprocated the act out of kindness while others ignored. One in particular, a drifloon, stared as he floated beside a decorative tree. A toddler played with the balloon, tugging and yanking him about. At first he cringed and whined, pleading Arceus for the child to stop following around.

----

When Togepi came into Drifloon's view it caught him by surprise; it's been ages since he's seen such a happy and content creature in this city, much less that species. Furthermore it's not often for one to be clinging to their Pokémon so tightly... the drifloon was certain it was painful.

----

Drifloon pursued the fresh duo, unintentionally dragging a child behind its tail. The child skipped and giggled behind the flying ghost type with a heart full of joy. Sticky fingers attempted to grasp the Pokémon's strings, but it was futile. Regardless the child continued to follow, enchanted by a flying balloon they've only imagined in tedious dentist visits.

"Trees? What kind of name is that for a Rattata?" Joey laughed nervously as the dark-grey Pokemon burst free from its ball. "W-what's wrong with your Pokemon? Why's it such a weird color? It looks... different... darker, somehow."

"It's called an Alolan form, apparently." Josef placed the empty ball back on his belt and took on a more relaxed pose. "My mom used to have one. Not a Rattata, but an Alolan form Pokemon. Funnily enough, it was a Meowth."

"Wow..." the boy's eyes seemed to be pulling themselves out of his face as he stared intently at the off-colored Pokemon. "I've never seen one before. That's pretty cool, but just because your Pokemon is a different type of Rattata that doesn't mean that this battle is going to end any differently! Let's just get this thing going already!"

Josef nodded. "It's technically my first real trainer battle, so don't be too harsh on me, alright?"

Joey smirked and then stood up straight, puffing out his chest. "Really? Guess I should take it easy on you then since you're such a newbie."

Josef smiled half-heartedly as he dragged his right leg across the ground, placing it firmly behind him as he took on a more aggressive stance. "Trees! You're going to win this battle!
Believe in yourself!"

"Rat!" The Pokemon called back as it tensed up its body, readying for whatever was to happen next.

Joey's eyes narrowed as he took a strong step forward, digging his heels into the ground. The boy inhaled deeply and then shouted at his Pokemon, "Rattata! Use Fury Swipes!"

The Rattata leaped forward, zig and zagging all the way over to Trees as its claws elongated. The Pokemon jumped onto the opposing Rattata and began to swipe at its face and body, time and time again.

Josef grunted as he watched his Pokemon get quickly jumped on. "Trees! Use Quick Attack to get away!"

"Rat-tat!" The Pokemon called out as it started to move forward slowly. The Pokemon quickly began to gain speed until the only thing that Joey's Rattata could do was hang on.

"Trees! Quick!" Josef pointed his finger at the fence positioned just behind Joey on the other side of their makeshift battlefield. "Run as fast as you can towards that fence and then throw off that Rattata!"

Joey leaned back and cupped his hands around his mouth. "Rattata! Hurry up and let go! It's okay if you lose them, just don't get throw into that fence!"

The Rattata struggled to gather its bearings. If the Pokemon had let go without a second thought, it would have been swiftly trampled over and hurt by the Rattata it was hanging on to with its life. Only seconds passed before Trees had come within feet of the fence. Joey's Rattata closed its eyes and clenched its teeth as Trees made a sudden turn, causing it to fall over and skid across the ground. Joey's Rattata rolled underneath and over Trees before flying off, coming to a jarring halt against the cold metal of the fence.

Trees quickly rose to its feet. The Pokemon was covered in bruises from the numerous hits it had taken from the opposing Rattata, but most of the damage had been done by its own hands during its accidental tumble. Joey's Rattata looked even worse for wear, however, as its whole body was covered in scrapes and bruises and even being so unlucky as to have had one of its eyes swollen shut.

"Rattata! Don't give up! I know you're the strongest one out here right now! Use your own Quick Attack and then follow it up with a Bite!"

The Rattata shook, struggling to stand on its own two feet. "R-Rattata!" Strong and defiant, despite the damage it had taken. It was apparent that both Pokemon were on their last legs, and whoever landed the next hit would likely be the victor of the match. Joey's Rattata started out its sprint much quicker than Trees had, rising to a speed high enough to cause Trees to grow dizzy in only a couple of seconds as one Rattata ran circles around the other.

"Trees, don't give in! Store up all the energy you can with Focus Energy and wait for my command! You've only got one shot, so ignore whatever else is going on and listen only to me! Trust me!"

Trees looked back at Josef and hesitantly nodded its head. The Pokemon closed its eyes and bowed its head. Trees' ears perked up as it awaited its master's call. Slowly, an aura formed around the Pokemon's head and shoulders as it focused its energy into what was currently its only points of attack.

Joey sniggered as he watched Trees begin to glow. Attacking from head on would most definitely be a mistake at this point, but if they came at the Pokemon from behind then it was unlikely Josef could keep up with the Pokemon's reactions. The boy waited a second, readying a speech in his mind for when it would be decided that he'd won.

"Trees, now!"

Joey snapped out of his daydream at the sound of Josef's voice. Wasn't he waiting for Joey's command to issue his own? Instead, Trees leaped forward at the exact instant that Joey's Rattata was beginning to come around its side. Trees crashed in to the speeding Rattata, causing it to spin in a circle before falling to the ground, and for Joey's Rattata to roll over several times before coming to a halt. A cloud of dust formed over the area, covering both Pokemon. The trainers rushed up to their respective Pokemon, calling out to them as they feared for the worst.

"Rattata! Rattata, are you alright? Talk to me buddy! We won, didn't we? We always do!"

"Trees? Trees, you there? Come on, man."

Both trainers fell quiet as they disappeared into the dust cloud and stopped at the places where their Pokemon had fallen. Josef stared down at the ground, seeing that Trees' body was still twitching but his eyes had sealed shut.

"Trees, you alright?"

"R-Rat..."

"Thank goodness. Hey, guess what? This means you're part of the top percent." The boy started to laugh and then lifted his Pokemon up into his arms before making a beeline for where Joey had been heading. "Hey, kid, you out here still? Joey? Hello?"

The dust slowly cleared, revealing that the boy had run off somewhere while Josef had been checking in on his own Pokemon. A few of the preschool kids had been watching the battle as it unfolded with wide eyes. Josef ran his hand across Trees' head before pressing the pokeball against it, sealing the Rattata away.

"Hey. You kids see which way that boy went?"

Two of the boys looked at each other and then shook their heads. "We couldn't see anything through the smoke. We're sorry. Thank you for helping us win against that bully though! He comes around every day to take our lunches away from us!"

Josef shook his head. "It's fine. I couldn't stand the way that he was treating your friend, so I just had to step in."

One of the little girls skipped up to the fence where the small crowd had started to gather in celebration of Joey's defeat. "Mister?"

Josef looked down at the little girl and then took a knee so that he could speak with her face-to-face. "Yeah? What's up?"

The little girl dug around in her bag and then pulled out a pokeball from within it. "Here you go. My mommy gave me this but I think you should have it. Joey beat up my Pokemon yesterday so mommy said I should use this ball to catch a stronger one and stand up for myself. But since you did it for me, I think it's better that you have it now."

Josef reached over the fence and took the reward. Josef smiled and then rubbed his hand across the little girl's head. "Like I said, it's no problem. If he comes around again, you should get a teacher to help you out. It's not good to have bullies like that around a place like this. You kids should be having fun, not be worrying about whether or not you're going to lose your lunches."

The little kids all smiled wide and then ran back inside the building, cheering for Josef and yelling about how they were going to ask for special lunches from their parents the next day since they weren't going to be stolen again. Josef smiled and then slowly scanned the area in search of Joey. There were a set of prints which began where the boy had started out at, but they quickly disappeared. The boy sighed, unsure of what would happen around the preschool after this. At the very least, he'd taught Joey a quick lesson which would hopefully help him to mature. In the meantime, however... the idea of listening to a radio while he adventured seemed quite tempting.

Chapter 2: Jubilife City​

To be a trainer that her parents would take pride in speaking of then Togepi needed to brawl. How ironic that Betty still sought out for the approval of her parents when she partook this journey to yank them off their back. Perhaps the dilemma wasn't her parents afterall?

----

Mental musings only took her so far. It was training that needed to be done. "Easier said than done," Betty muttered to herself, debating the next course of action. Togepi had been given a third piece of bread upon her request which consisted of wiggling her stubby arms in the air.

----

With the food and drink gone Betty was left with where to go. Training in such a city could be problematic with a starter that knows metronome.

----

Meanwhile the drifloon hovered not too far off, curiosity leading him towards the duo. The child carried the determination needed to leap and snatch the strings connected to the balloon Pokémon. Many attempts were done and yet the child kept trying for success.

----

During one of Betty's pauses the toddler took a leap of faith and miraculously grasped one of Drifloon's strings. What ensued was a montage of painful yanks, broken english, irksome laughter and giggles, vision blurred due to the constant tugging, and dwindling patience.

----

Drifloon spent his days blown by the winds, scavenging for human food he had grown very fond of. Today of all days he had stumbled upon a delicious scent that humans have dubbed "hot dog." Unfortunately it was at the hands of a child and too late did he realize this, already close enough in proximity for them to grasp his strings. But the scent was overwhelming and worth plotting against for... once an opening arose.

As the balloon relishes the idea of hot dogs Betty glanced over the tv station with curiosity, never having been in. However there was a risk of being asked to be on live television accompanied by a strenuous attempt at declining such offers.

----

She smirked and continued on forward in glee with a content stomach. Togepi felt no different, eyelids heavy. The fairy yawned with limbs outstretched before shrinking into her shell for slumber.

----

A rapid set of footsteps approached Betty, high heels at best, but she shrugged it off as mere coincidence. Perhaps the individual was late for a meeting? Some do walk awfully fast as well... in addition it's occurred when the need for a restroom comes so suddenly.

----

"Excuse me, young lady?" a female voice attempted to get to the young trainer. Betty took notice of the voice, but was convinced it wasn't directed at her. "Excuse me, please," they asked once more, voice dripping with distress. Betty swiveled around awkwardly, surprised it was her who was being spoken to. It was a tall and pale madam with golden hair tied into a painful high bun. Her emerald dress matches well with the beige blouse. "Have you seen little Mary?" the woman questioned, hands lowering to show the height of this said person. Without giving enough time to reply she repeats. "Have you seen her?"

No such memory of a small child, assumed from the short height, resurfaced to the trainer. "I... I don't know, um, I don't remember, I'm so sorry-"

----

"She's a small girl with red hair tied into-" the woman interjected in hopes of jogging Betty's memory, panicking with jittery hands. "-ponytails, and she's wearing a red dress! W-with a bear on it. Have you seen her?!" A blank look was given to the frantic woman, whose worry then multiplied. Togepi grumbled in her slumber, eyes forced open to witness the ensuing commotion. Betty wished to help, but where to begin was the problem. Should she get herself involved in the dilemma of another?

----

With hesitation she decided to lend a hand knowing a child might be in peril. "I'm so sorry I don't remember, but I can try to-"

----

As soon as the woman's eyes picked up the sight of a passerby she locked Betty out, slightly shoving her aside to reach for another. A sharp pang of distress consumed Betty, whom had just experienced her rare heroic display turn to ashes. Then again the attempt was mediocre at best so the blame didn't fall on the stranger this time.

----

Not wanting to be put in a very awkward position, Betty began to walk the opposite way of the commotion. "Hey Togepi, Aria if you prefer, how was sleep?" she asked to distract herself. The fairy blinked whilst tilting her head back to get a good view of her trainer.

----

Betty and Togepi continued onward deeper into the city. Unbeknownst to them the Drifloon had been trailing them out of boredom, hoping the pestering child would leave them be.

"So this is Jubilife, huh? ...It's really big. I wonder if there's a library somewhere in this mess." Silvana remarked as she observed the city's skyline. As much as she was impressed and perhaps a bit intimidated by the city, her dream of becoming a powerful magician did not lay in any of these huge businesses. And then, someone laid a rather heavy, forceful hand on her. "Hm?" Silvana blurted out in mild alarm, only to turn her head and stare into the eyes of ... a man, her own height, with his face obscured by a brown paper bag and a pair of tinted ray-ban glasses that hid his eyes. "First I've gotta see if you're the real deal..." the man remarked. "What--KyyyaaaAAAAA!!" Silvana began in an understandably bewildered tone, only to scream in alarm as the man reached and attempted to embrace her. "CREEPY KIDNAPPER!! WARLE POUND!!" Silvana squealed as she promptly facepalmed the man on his behalf, keeping him at arm's length as he made grabby hands at her rather ineffectually. An equally confused Warle hopped into action, leaping into the air and smacking the man rather hard, throwing him from Silvana several feet away onto the ground. Just like that, Silvana was off. Without hesitation, she turned tail and fled elsewhere in the city, leaving Warle and the man with a bag on his head to share a look for a moment before Warle ran off to join her trainer.

Josef stepped up to the front door of the Hexcorp company, hopeful that he could pass whatever test they'd prepared for him to overcome in order to obtain the radio app. The boy walked inside as he was blasted by several fans which were propelling warm, misty air at towards the doorway.

"Welcome to Hexcorp!" A young woman who was only a few years older than Josef sat at the front desk on the other side of the lobby. The woman welcomed Josef with a smile and a nod. "Are you here for the competition?"

Josef nodded his head. "Yes ma'am."

The woman smiled and then motioned to her right side. "Right that way. Take the elevator up to the second floor. The offices there have been turned into a makeshift arena for the giveaway."

Josef nodded his head and walked by the receptionist, following the hallway to which she'd pointed. At the end of the hallway were a set of elevators with matching call buttons. The boy pressed one of the two buttons and a chime played, announcing the arrival of the elevator he'd called for. Josef peered into the small area, and having noted that nobody was inside trying to get off, headed into it himself. Three columns of buttons were presented to the boy on the inside of the elevator, each of which represented a different floor. The boy wasted no time in mashing his thumb against the button with the number '2' on it, causing the doors to slowly draw close and the elevator to begin its ascent.

Several seconds passed before a chime similar to the one before played over the speakers. The doors pulled themselves open, revealing a large gathering of people from varying ages. In the center of the room, a scientist stood atop a table and held a microphone in his hand. The man seemed to be in more casual attire than one would expect of a scientist, but he still had on the signature white overcoat which is what gave it all away.

"Nobody? Nobody?" The scientist yelled into the microphone with a smile on his face. "I guess my Porygon here is just too strong, isn't that right, Kal?"

The Porygon hovered around its trainer without making a sound. Its eyes scanned the room, searching for a new opponent before locking on to Josef.

"You there! The young man in the back who just arrived! Are you here to take on my challenge?"

The crowd parted, leaving a small path for Josef to take up to the arena. The boy started rolling the bottom of his shirt between his fingers, growing increasingly nervous about the number of eyes in the room the longer he stayed there.

"Y-yes. I'm here for the radio."

"So is everyone else my boy! Come on up, you'll have your chance! Everyone gets just one though, so make sure you're ready for it!"

Josef fixated his eyes on the ground, not wanting to acknowledge just how many people were around him. His palms were beginning to sweat, but he couldn't back down just yet. He wanted that radio app, regardless of the costs. He'd already spent a considerable amount of time weighing its worth and utility against the various factors at play, and had decided it best to go for it despite everything in his body screaming at him to run back to the safety of the elevator.

"I'm here for the radio..." Josef whispered to himself as he fumbled with the pokeball at his waist.

"Hey kid, don't keep us waiting now! Let's see what you've got!"

Josef jolted back to attention, ripping the ball off of his belt and dropping it to the ground in a single motion. The ball rolled over on itself, enlarging and then popping open lazily. Rouge appeared from the red light emitted from the ball and let out a lazy cry.

"A Deino, eh? Sounds like this'll be a challenge! Let's get down to business then!"

"Rouge, use Dragon Rage!"

The Deino reeled its head back and then shot out a powerful blast of purple-black flames that struck the Porygon head on.

"Kal, no!"

The Pokemon fell to the ground, bouncing off of it. The Porygon winced in pain, and seemed to be surprisingly damaged by the attack.

"Damn those fixed damage moves... EV and IV training means nothing when you hit me with that shit..." The scientist scratched his head vigorously and then rushed up to his Pokemon, pulling a potion from his back pocket. "Here, take this real quick and then get back out there!"

After spraying the Pokemon's wounds with the potion, Porygon began to hover back in the air strong and proud as if nothing had ever happened.

"Kal, use Tri Attack!"

The blocky Pokemon formed a triangle around its head in which fire, electricity and ice all mingled together. The triangle condensed down into a ball and then shot out like a rocket towards the Deino. The little dragon barely had the time to dodge before the attack blew past where it had just been standing. The Deino kept moving, realizing that if it was hit by the attack it would most likely faint instantly.

"Kal, don't let up! Keep firing until you've got nothing left!"

"Rouge! Don't stop running! Fire off a Dark Pulse whenever you get the chance! Don't let it sit still either! It can't live forever!"

"Dei!" The Pokemon trotted around the perimeter of the arena as it dodged attack after attack and firing back with attacks of its own.

"Kal, his attacks can't hurt you! All we have to do is hit him once, so stay where you are! If you start moving, it'll be even harder to focus in on him!"

The Pokemon's eyes narrowed as it focused on the Deino. The Porygon stopped firing off attacks haphazardly and began to charge up all of its energy into one larger than average orb.

"Rouge, he's charging up for an attack! Use this time to whittle it down even further!"

"Dei!"

The Deino fired off a Dragon Rage attack, followed by a couple of Dark Pulses. Each attack hit its mark, causing the Porygon to cease hovering and fall to the ground. However, Kal continued to charge its attack even while on its last legs.

"Kal, fire!"

The Porygon let loose the collection of energy as its eyes fell closed. The scientist crossed his fingers, hoping that the attack could hit so that he could call it a draw.

"Dei!"

The attack struck the Deino, sending it tumbling backwards before a cloud of smoke consumed it. Josef leaned into the arena, hoping to catch a glimpse of his Pokemon, hoping to see that it was alright and that they'd won. Several seconds passed before the smoke dispersed, and when it did, it could be seen that all but the Deino's head had been frozen solid.

"D-dei?" The Pokemon cried out softly, craning its neck towards Josef.

The boy jumped into the arena and grabbed up his frozen Pokemon, hugging it tightly. "Yeah, we won buddy. Don't worry, I'll take you to the Pokemon center when we're done here. You did good."

The scientist walked over to Josef and sighed. The man had already recalled his Pokemon, admitting defeat the second that he saw Rouge wasn't completely frozen. "It was about a fifty-fifty chance that he'd have gotten knocked out. Your Deino's one strong customer being able to tank Kal's attacks like that. Listen... that app, you can get it from the front desk. I'll let the receptionist know that you won while you're in the elevator."

Josef nodded, pressing Rouge's pokeball against the Pokemon's now limp body. "Thanks. It was a good battle. I know that radio will be useful eventually."

"I'm sure it will be. It's Hexcorp brand after all."
