Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

It's a damn shame that we have to add another name of the growing list of celebrity deaths in 2016, we're half-way through the year and it truly is proving to be a pretty shitty year death wise.

Just like Shirley Temple, I thought Muhammad Ali was already dead. Looks like now we'll never have that dream battle between him and Mike Tyson outside that one EA boxing game we had a couple of years back. May he rest in peace.

This was tragic stuff to hear after I just came back from grocery shopping. It's so bad that 2016 is the year we've been losing way too many legends and Ali has added to that growing toll.

R.I.P. Muhammad Ali, a legend of his game and a legend to all of us.

Terrible news to wake up to but after seeing him in the news yesterday and how grave his condition was, I had a feeling that I'd be waking up to such. Yet another legend that 2016 has taken from us. Rest in peace.

Terrible news. I'm not big on boxing (I'm more of a MMA guy) but his contributions to the sport are undeniable. He'll certainly be missed.
