    Hey,
I was wondering if rom hacking could help get you get into a good college?
Im not saying just starting a hack, im talking about if you finish a successful game like Shiny Gold and etc.

I don't think you should put ROM Hacking on your application given its legal ambiguity. However, writing about something like "GBA Game Development" is perfectly acceptable (and may help you get into a good CS university). Though GBA Development entails actually programming in some language like C (thus it's probably beyond most "ROM Hackers") so I wouldn't write about it unless you actually have some experience with it.

    Thanks for the info,
What if im trying to get into a college and specialize in image/video editing professionally? Also thinking about making website layouts. If i put something about how i completed a full GBA game remake or something like that, would that be acceptable?

Probably not, because, as the previous poster stated, it's pretty far into legal grey area. However, if you've made sprites from scratch, that may help.

Like colcolstyles said, GBA game development would help, along with game art/sprite creation. A GBA remake would involve downloading the rom, which is not the most legal thing to do and might hurt your chances.

    Yeah i understand that,
But, like sometimes dont they ask you questions like what do you do with free time aside from school? I have MANY other things i do besides rom hacking, but, if you finish a rom hack than its proof of hard work and determination to things you set out to do. And it would help prove my skills at that. So i would just say GBA development?
What about something a little bit more specific like: enhancing the gameplay and development of games by creating original content such as scripts and graphics.
Without stating that i downloaded illegal roms.

Well I don't know what others think, but if I were are a college and I heard "GBA development" as someones hobby then I would ask "what the heck is that?" Then what would you say in response to that question? I can't think of a response that wouldn't evoke legality questions...Same with the last part of your post. Even by not mentioning the downloading of illegal roms, you still are admitting to editing some companies game, which is usually not legal. I would just stay away from mentioning anything about editing legal games if I was you.

In a few rare cases it has helped, but in most cases people either didn't list it or it didn't help them. As stated before it is in a legally gray area so if you are like me and own and dump your own roms, it should be legally sound (where I live at least), but it probably still won't help. I would make it VERY clear what you are doing though because you might still get into some legal questioning.

    Possibly, yes.
In my case, I was getting ready for the boards and at the same time, was trying to figure out how to hack. Hacking improves your brain if "done right". I don't really know much hacking helped (or did it help at all) but at least, I got great results and got in to all the universities I applied to :D

    "didn't list it"
What do you mean by this ?
Do they actually ask if you do rom hacking or something ?

Lol'd, sorry. Everyone put "I hack pokemon roms that I(most likely) downloaded illegal off the internet" on their college resumes. Let everyone know how it goes.

Hm... I see that of course there have been some people at TAFE in the state of Victoria, Australia that actually do have people downloading ROMs off the internet and playing them on an Emulator, from what I remember when I was doing the Multimedia Course at TAFE back in 2009. Incase you're wondering, TAFE is acually college under a different name here in Australia.

But of course... ROM hacking is actually a good way for people who wish to start game development and their dreams of doing things that have never been done by Nintendo before.

I'm sure it would help if you're wanting to learn how to create new games and all that sort of stuff... but knowing Nintendo... they can be quite conservative. I still wonder if it will be possible to extract a 3DS ROM once the Nintendo 3DS gets released? We've just gotta try... and make sure that Nintendo doesn't bring us to the drop off point in ROM Hacking, which would be our worst nightmare of course. Hopefully the Nintendo 3DS won't be hack proof once it gets released.

But yes... the colleges can actually vary, but yes, ROM Hacking would at least help you with your dreams of creating video games and all that. And better storylines ect.

The skills are probably more valuable than the actual title on your resumé.

Assuming you're a reasonably prolific hacker with minimal reliance on "tools" and under, you'll have a fairly diverse skillset for some hardcore integrated systems type work. Knowing how to work a debugger and the like is also a handy skill to have. It'll also help introduce one to a whole bunch of important programming concepts.

As someone who can write their own assembly code reasonably fluently, I've been told I know more about the subject than most CS graduates. But then, I'm a science graduate so I would not say that it was beneficial so much as good at wasting time :D
