How stickler are you guys as far as working with what happened in the actual games and in the Pokémon world storyline? Your thoughts on the legendary Pokémon would be particularly useful. :)

I'm trying to figure out what to do with the legendaries in my own game. I want the trainer to be able to complete the Pokédex, but at the same time, I'm not sure if true, one of a kind, legendary Pokémon should be caught or not.

I don't think it would be an issue, which ever you choose. If a particular person doesn't like it, they may not play your game. Ultimately, though, it is your game, may like you want it.

For instance, in a game I'm making, I'll have three trios from different generations.

Pokemon is a rich setting with so much potential.

Personally, (from the view of a dev) I wouldn't want to limit my self to "canon." Pokemon stories are kind of boring and uninspired. The themes they explore (cloning Pokemon, Pokemon & the environment, Pokemon slavery, etc...) are interesting, but handled in a Saturday-morning cartoon way with cardboard villains so the themes aren't used to their full potential.

I wouldn't worry about canon at all. It's my game, and I'll do what I want in it.

That especially applies to the legendaries. If I think that Shaymin should be a common Pokémon which evolves into Skymin upon levelling up while holding a Gradicea Flower, then that's what I'll do. Of course, I'd change its stats and so forth. My point is that I wouldn't in any way be restricted in my use of the legendary Pokémon, whether it be availability, location, powers or even status as a legendary.

It helps that I just ignore when the games say Arceus literally created the universe (and so forth), because such powers are silly. They may be powerful, yes, but space-time manipulation and all that stuff they usually make movies out of, I consider to be fiction. There's nothing more remarkable about Dialga than there is about Articuno, in my view. Which Pokémon are "one of a kind" is entirely up to you.

For me: If you try to be canon, fine. I you don't worry about this isn't that bad. The most important is to make a good game.

About legendaries, even the Game Freak stopped worrying about the old ones after GSC, mostly notably in HgSs were they redo some things to have more legendaries.

Pokémon is an unfinished story, so maybe things that we can made can be non-canon in some change (like Giovanni in HgSS). This can be very annoying.

On last resort: Make time-travel or paralel worlds to make this canon XD
