Music Covers better than the original

What are some song covers that for whatever reason you think are better than the original?

your turn

Hungry Like A Wolf is a pretty good song. Not amazing, but pretty good.

The Ska version of it, on the otherhand, is the best thing ever.

Hungry Like A Wolf - Reel Big Fish

I mean, Queen makes everything sound better live...

Covers are a risky thing, they're either brilliant or terrible and there's rarely a middle ground. Anyway I think one of the best covers I have ever heard is Disturbed's version of Land of Confusion. It's amazing and definitely better than the original.

Edit: I think though that the ultimate in covers in Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. It's so beautiful. Can't believe I forgot to mention it.

I live for BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge covers hahaha.

These covers are some of my faves - I love it when artists can make a song their own :,)

Hands To Myself/Sorry - Troye Sivan

Blank Space/Style - Louisa Wendorff

Dirty - Ed Sheeran (ok literally all of Ed's covers are gold)

Get Lucky - San Cisco

Have you heard Miley Cyrus' cover of Lana Del Ray's Summertime Sadness? Proof she's a talented singer singing shit songs. It's very good.

Yeah I have! It's so good. And yeah definitely - I guess there's a lot less risk when you do covers since you're not releasing it to radio so you don't need to make sure it's radio-friendly and generic and going to sell heaps, so it gives you heaps more space to be experimental and authentic.

I'm generally of the opinion that covers are one of the riskiest things an artist can do haha. You're either going to get bashed for making it too different or bashed for not making it different enough. Not to mention I just personally feel covers are either great or bad with not much of a middle ground.

Yeah that's also true. I guess it's just a different kind of risky. Like I feel that for a lot of these artists (eg Miley Cyrus) it would be tough for them to be experimental with their own music because if it flops, it'll put a strain on their career, their cashflow, their relationship with their label (I'd imagine), etc, whereas if a cover is meh they might get bashed but it's not going to be career-defining, and covers are generally a lot 'smaller' impact for mainstream artists than their own singles so it won't have such a massive impact.

THAT SAID I do agree that it is risky regardless, and takes a lot of guts to change something that people already love. Everything is risky. ;P

speaking of Troye Sivan (@Charlie Brown):

I actually only literally just listened to the original for the first time before listening to the cover. The original is pretty cool but I love the extra edge that Troye adds to it. Not his best cover imo but still pretty good, cheers for sharing o/

That's only my personal taste but I like Zeromancer cover for "Photographic" more than the Depeche Mode original :)
