Far out, this is possible no matter when, k? The solar flare could come at any time, just like an asteroid could decide to "mate with" Earth any time. There's no sense worrying about it until it happens.

I wish we all didn't have to be afraid of the end of the world. Like really, we should be able to live in peace. D:

This would probably mean Australia would drown too, assuming it's pretty flat.

Australia is very flat. Our tallest mountain is at about 3km, but that's an epic outlier compared to the rest of the country. Plus, all of us live on the coast (practically) so it'd be practically drowning Australia anyway even if the middle of the continent stayed.

And can we please stop thinking about the end of the world as we know it? It's a very depressing subject. :(

also it means i won't graduate :(

also you're making me use :(. I never use the :(.

Hasn't the sun shot solar flares at us before though, and hasn't the earth's magnetic fields protected us from the such before though? =/ I mean, sure, there is the chance a freak massive one may come, but the chances of that are...very small. (Cool fact - the sun is more 'active' with flares and sunspots before quietening down again, etc every 11 years!)

Oooh that's why it's underwater in 2012. XD;

It would be pretty awesome for the world to be underwater... but... yeah it's only good in movies >___>;

it's only cool if the sun flares do some crazy stuff to life on earth and we get Pokemanz.

That is all.

Actually it would suck

Humans would have to adapt to the underwater, either becoming amphibious or aquatic. And guess what? There are sharks, and crocs, and either we get harpoonin' or get eaten.

Or we'll make an air-bubble Atlantis under the sea.

NC: That reminds me of where I was going with NaNoWriMo which I decided to continue on today (...slightly, but still!) Of magical things happening, lol.

Ryo: Atlantis ftw? :D

NaNoWriMo! Yay!

Except it's in the middle of tests and assignments of term 4.

Nay!

So instead, DO SoCNoC! SOUTHER CROSS NOVEL CHALLENGE!

If we got Pokemonz

I could only imagine the terror. A Pokemon that brings sandstorms wherever it goes (Ttar), a land shark(Garchomp), a hideous...whatever(Jynx), also Pokemon would enhance everything.

I mean everything.

Also America isn't really highish either. Asia would be my best bet.

Painful... as long as nobody is hurt. XD;

And ummm yeah exams kinda got in the way of working on NaNo but I had free time, so :D;

yeah, but drowning half the world is terribad. D:

what approximate sea level rise would there be, anyway, TS?

You have to remember that Earth' magnetic field is gradually getting quite weaker. While it does protect us from MOST of what the sun's tiny solar flares (note that most sorta leak in, which is reason for strange high temperatures if it occurs). The solar flare that would happen in 2012 is said to be quite the bad one; it's said to utterly go through the hole in our magnetic field(yes our magnetic field has a whole. And not a small one, I'll tell you that) and slam against Earth's surface, causing the aforementioned disasters.
It is getting weaker...but very slowly as far as I know. =/ And generally predictions for solar activity isn't really that accurate atm as well, which is what I learnt in Astronomy this year - for instance they predicted the peaking of solar activity in this cycle to occur earlier on but it started late. (Plus we've had rather strong ones before too which did have an effect but there was no apopcalypse from that).

Eh, I just figure there's no point worrying about it though. If something suddenly does happen we won't be able to stop it, and the chance is rather small as well.

Anyways, I decided to look it up some. Here's a website being rather gloomy about it... but it didn't list any sources and seemed a bit silly ('if the scientists are worried we should be worried!'... but are they that worried?), and it was a 2012 theory site which seems to be filled with all the possible ways we are going to die. -_- Then there's this site... an anti-2012 hoax site. XD But it actually listed sources at the bottom, and says stuff like 'The Sun was due to reach a maximum (called 'solar max') in its 11 year cycle in 2011 or 2012. However, more recent observations have pushed this date off to sometime in 2013.' (which adds up with what I learnt in astronomy, heh), and also this:
Specifically, there is no prediction of a massive life-killing solar flare in 2012. Even more specifically, there is no evidence that our sun can produce a 'Knowing' type solar flare anytime soon. We know what stars like our sun are capable of by looking at other sun-like stars. If these stars were churning out massive CMEs like the movie 'Knowing' depicted, then we would see that in other stars… and we don't.

TBH it seems more to me like someone shouted over nothing.

Shnap.

Next time you do that, Bob, you need to begin your post with the following:

OBJECTION!

If this bad solar flare thing does break through the magnetic field, what's the worst it can do without killing all of humanity?

Wipe out most of humanity.

:D

I also just Sav'd my Pokemon and found out my Ulgamoth has 31 Sp. Attack IVs, and Doryuzu 31 Attack.

...okay what's the worst it can do without wiping out ANY OF HUMANITY? :(

Apparently knock out electricity for a number of places which'd possibly stuff up the economy, really, and maybe some variances in temperature too (but how that would affect stuff depends and all =p

...ooh. D: I don't think life would be worth living without electricity, lol. :x

I mean, like, I understand how people in the past survived without electricity, but not for me~

No electricity?
Well, you can have my Pikachu for electricity generation purposes. XD

Pikachu is the cutest Pokemon ever.
^ The statement above is false.
