When Ash ran into Mewtwo's cloning thing, it cloned him and that clone was Ritchie. He probably went and did all the things Ash did because it was in his DNA. o3o

It's been a long time since I've seen the show, but I don't recall Ash even having a rival between Gary and Paul (which would mean all of Johto and Hoenn). And concerning Ritchie... did we really need ANOTHER Pikachu-using chump?

Gary was Ash's rival for the first season. Gary used every chance he could to one up Ash and then rub it in his face. Plus he always had his cheerleaders with him, which annoyed me. I still don't understand why he had a car in the first episode, he was 10.

But IIRC they didn't show up till almost the League tournament. I don't think he had any rival-like character that kept popping up throughout the entire course of his journey. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'll be the first to admit my memories of the anime are hazy at best.
