Developing: Massive 9.0 Magnitude Earthquake hits Japan

I am sad that this happened. I am sad for all the people who died. I also hope all the nukes don't blow up. Then, they can't live around there for like 1,000 years.

I sure as hell hope you're not talking about nuclear bombs because this is something very, very different.
 
Right Now on TV Tokyo: How to make a neck rest.

But i guess aslong as the other channels cover the deaths and ruins, it's not important for the japan's major tv channel to do it... On the other hand thought, I guess people who arent affected by the earthquakes, or even people who are and are tired of hearing about it, should be allowed a TV channel which doesnt cover that.

I worry for all the people living in Japan and I feel like even the rest of the world is majorly affected by this incident.. If not physically then economically. I am happy that there have been a lot of action to donate to relief funds recently as they need it.
 
As horrible as this disaster was (and still is), the recovery from this will devastate Japan's economy even more than the 90's housing crises that caused an economic depression (which aftereffects still exist today). Not to mention the 2007 economic depression.

As far as the nuclear power plants go, they might have to circulate sea water through the cooling system in order to stop the cores melting. However, the long term effects might be the oxidation of the entire system, meaning they won't be able to reuse the reactor. They are also saying that even if the cores do start to melt, the fallout would be similar to TMI and not Chernobyl.
 
It seems that rescue efforts are now focused on helping people who are stranded in schools, hospitals and other buildings which survived intact. Unlike other earthquake disasters there haven't been many people rescued from buildings because a lot that would have otherwise been still standing were completely demolished by the tsunami. Over 10,000 are missing. Thousands are confirmed dead. Tens of thousands of people are stranded in shelters or on top of buildings without medicine, diapers, blankets and other essentials.

I found a stream of NHK's coverage and was watching some survivors talk about what happened. One old woman said her husband disappeared behind her in the water as she rushed to safety. They showed a high school which had just finished a graduation ceremony and everyone had left right before the quake. Really really heartbreaking things like that. But then in the middle of the broadcast one of the announcers got a phone call from family members who were safe and had food and water and that was so uplifting to watch.

And then I found these unbelievable things people have been saying on facebook. I'm just speechless. I cannot believe what some people are saying about this.

Nuclear Reactors, not nuclear weapons, jut to be clear on that. But you're correct, a melt down would utterly devastate the surrounding areas. It would be a nightmare.
 
Wow, I finally got around to looking at all the aftermath again. Good God. :X 95% of a town destroyed, an estimated 10,000 body count and all the nuclear stuff. This makes me event more determined to head a relief fund at my school. :S

All that devastation is just heart breaking..

Which is odd, because I thought Japan was vehemently against nuclear technology, post WW2.

Anyway... Yeah. This string of horrific events is awful.

But look at the bright side: Hopefully, Japan doesn't have politics completely and soulcrushingly destroying relief efforts.

*Cough*

But yeah. These chain-reaction catastrophes are horrible, and I pray for those in Japan. Despite my opinions on the Japanese, it's hard to feel anything but pity at this point.

They're not sure if the earthquake triggered the eruption or if it erupted on its own. But man, those poor people.

Nope. They use Nuclear Power and have Nuclear weapons. I'd protest Nuclear power too if 100,000 innocent civilians of my country were incinerated by Nuclear weapons.

Now a Volcanic eruption can be caused by tectonic (earthquake) activity, but it remains to be seen whether of not the recent earthquake caused the volcano to erupt.
 
I was told that Satoshi Tajiri has been killed in the Earthquake? can someone please clerify if this is true of false please? thanks.

My prayers go out to Japan, More Tsunami's are meant to hit aswell, those poor people.

For the millionth time, that is a hoax perpetuated by some troll. He is alive. No more discussion.

I had heard that the aftershocks have the ability to cause more Tsunami waves as well.

Correct.
They are simply put, mini-earthquakes. So there is still a possibility of more tsunami waves, however, I doubt there will be one as powerful as the first, since that was caused by a 8.9 earthquake. I don't think I remember an after shock that was the same ferocity as the original earthquake.

I am sure you know, the 3rd reactor has exploded in Fukushima. They are still trying to cool the second, however, they might be struggling to control it, since they were trying to cool the 3rd, but that exploded.
The problem they are now faced with, is there is a possibility of a meltdown, which would be very bad. :/​

Japan is the third largest user of nuclear power.
 
Here I am complaining that I haven't played Black or White yet while some people's journey in Unova has ended. :\

I'd be more moved he I've seen this but my satellite's messe up and I can't see the news channels. My dad first said that it was a tsunami and I wasn't really concerned as the area hit wasn't Tokyo and even though the last tsunami caused great damage, I just wasn't moved. Now I heard an earthquake also came, poor people :( One hit Kobe not too long ago, I learnt in Geography. And what a massive magnitude! Earthquakes are horrible and becoming too common. Now I just read from a poster above that a volcano is coming/has started erupting. :( God be with them.

I read in the paper that in Japan the earthquake has already been already raised the magnitude to 9.0, whereas America still goes by the 8.9 magnitude.
This earthquake caused the main island to move 2,6 metres and shifted the earth's axis with about 10°, making the Earth's rotation around the sun shorter by a few milliseconds.
This is the greatest shift since the earthquake in Chile last year in February (8.8 Magnitude), which was about 8°.

The aftershocks don't seem to be stopping any time soon. =/ Apparently there's a good chance another earthquake is on it's way (7.0).
I want to ask my prof what's causing so many aftershocks... He was on TV explaining how the Pacific Plate dives underneath the Eurasian plate, the Ring of Fire and the birth of Tsunami's. Despite it being horrible, it's quite funny to see your professor on tv. |D

I don't know if anyone noticed it, but it seems to be me that the so called "Ring of Fire" has been quite active these past "months"; Chile, New Zealand, Japan... not to mention the countless vulcanoes that erupted in the past year. (not counting the Islandic Vulcano with the dificult name, you'd make me say "the earth is quite active these times")

I'm not gonna keep on dwelling on the excitement of all this geological news. You have to excuse me for that. Being interested in Geology, I can't help it.

As great as this news is for geologists, as disastrous it is for the people living in Japan.
Natural, Economic and Nuclear disaster all in one go... I honestly hope they can manage to get things back in order as soon as possible. =/ Just now the country had started to get out of the Economic crisis of last year... The Nike took a dive of 6%(?) (trying to remember the news of this morning >_>), many large facilities/companies had to close their doors, million of export products have been gone to waste... which would have covered part of a decent income otherwise...

Apparently this earthquake will be the most expensive since the one in California years ago (6.7 (?)). =/

And last, but certainly not least, my thoughts go out to the many people in Japan that are still looking for their missing loved ones, to those that have to rely on help of outside and to all people in general. =/

Chile Earthquake - February 27th 2010
New Zealand Earthquate - February 22nd 2011
Japan Earthquake - March 11th 2011

It makes sense, even though there is a big jump between the first and second one. The fault line in Chile ruptured, which destabilized the Pacific Plate. Now, since it was the first one and caused destabilization, it would take longer for the second to occur. I am not sure why, I just know this happens.

The destabilization that was already on the SW part of the plate was fixed-ish, but that put stress on the SE part, when that stress was released it put stress on the NW part, and when that was released it puts pressure on the NE part (Part of Mexico up to Alaska.)

These same series of earthquakes in the same amount of time happened in 1902 and the years surrounded it, San Francisco says hello.

It's possible that this is just one big coincidence. It's possible that it isn't. It doesn't hurt to be prepared.
