Remember 56k warnings?
I haven't used dial up in a long time, but I have a lot of memories of it. I had a pretty slow dial-up connection until late 2004, when we finally upgraded. It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 12 years since then at this point, though I'll admit that I've become so reliant on a swift internet connection that I wouldn't be able to get by without it. (Nor would the schools I've attended or the employers I've worked for; video streaming seems to be expected both at work/school and at home these days.)
It's only been a couple of years since I last used dial-up at my grandmother's house, though, and my other grandmother didn't have any form of internet until a few months ago. (Admittedly, she doesn't use it, but her relatives sure appreciate the upgrade!) I remember going a lot of places without internet connectivity even through the end of 2012 or so, and when I could get a connection, it was frequently dial-up. Phones have really changed that for me, though. I finally got a smart phone at the beginning of 2013, and now I'm connected to a fairly fast connection all the time (except when I don't have service and don't have a wifi network around).
I do know a couple of people in rural areas who simply can't get anything other than dial-up still. One of them is from a bigger city, and really wants to upgrade, but there are apparently no options.
