I liked steins gate. I liked madoka. Heck, '11 was a great anime year for me. So sue me. :P

...I associate that one short samurai guy in log horizon almost entirely with you Netto, which is intriguing. It's like you're inside my animay.

As a lurker of 4chan, yes, it really does. Really hard to get out of the mindset afterwards.

I actually don't talk about the stuff I watch that often. Heck, I probably talk about anime more with you guys than I do with anyone else.

@Sync - We can talk about S;G as long as Laptrap's not here. But not sure if that counts as unanimous.

Does Lappy have a problem with Steins;Gate or something ._.

Spoiler:

Are there other SAO threads on PC that you're referencing here?
...I guess there would be, it'd make a lot of sense.

Must suck to have really liked the books only to see a huge negative backlash when the adaptation comes, though.

Here.

It's a love-hate relationship also. It's just that the series became so popular that it had its share of hype backlash. What I truly lament is the lack of discussion on the issues it raises. Everyone focuses on the "horrible story writing" and "harem" stuff and keeps avoiding the bigger issues it raises. Its what drew me back into the VRMMO/FRPG genre anyways.

I'm biased to Kokoro Connect because of the sub-genre. Don't ask me about it.

Well, I mean, if something has a terrible story and its characters are based around an idea you find dry, those "points" that it raises won't really matter because, to you, the show's bad. Why would you keep watching?

I guess that's where we diverge. While some don't like the story, I was perfectly fine with how it was presented novel wise.

As I mentioned before the adaptation to me was severely lacking in characterization, hence people cannot empathize with the characters.

Anyways, I really have seen this all too frequently already and I just shrug over it nowadays.

As for people watching something they hate...that always worries me. I mean if you hate it, why keep talking about it? It just raises publicity. If you don't like it, wouldn't it be better for people to not find out about it in the first place?

I wasn't really giving my opinion exactly, just raising a perspective as to why someone would focus on the themes when they don't like the themes or sub-genres. If I minded harems, I wouldn't enjoy Monogatari (though it depends on how they're handled). And the story only hurt me in Alfheim; my thoughts are mostly on other aspects of the show.

All I'm saying is that unless you go to places that are specifically for SAO (stream comments, dedicated sites, etc.) or wait until a few years after the show ends, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. And it clearly bothers you, both by how you keep bringing it up and how you talk about it. I know your pain all too well, but I think that if you keep visiting that thread that you have here, on a forum with a bunch of anime fans that have mixed feelings about the show, you're just making it worse for yourself.

Pokey had a signature that illustrated this pretty well, and I've pretty much stop expecting people to drop shows and instead expect them to ride trains they don't like too much, if at all. They're anime fans, and just like VG fans, they're going to vent about how much they hate something because it burns them up to the point that they need to. Like me with Mirai Nikki. I try not to bring it up, but I hate that damn show so much it's difficult not to, sometimes. People want other people to know that they hate something so that that apathy might spread and the listeners will either avoid it or go into it with a bias. Or, alternatively, they hate the fact that people like something that they might just dislike or be mostly indifferent to and need to vent about that. The last one probably applies to a quarter or maybe half of the SAO haters.

Among other reasons.

Well I'm not going to stop talking about it just because it hurts my sensitivities. If I don't learn to address something like fiction, how can I handle something more deeply embedded in society, issues like abortion, welfare and economy?

These are topics that are not engaged with in a rational fashion, but are instead governed all too well by emotions.

Anyways I'm just read it because I am hoping that these next few arcs would be received better, considering that the writing somewhat addresses some of the concerns of the past season.

Well, I think there's a difference between talking about something that's important and something that you love.

For instance, you all know how much I love Inazuma Eleven. If IE were in the position that SAO is for you, I'd certainly deal with it worse than a discussion about...say, welfare because one of those two things is important but I don't really care about them. And even if you do, you're definitely not as passionate about one as you are the other.

oh.

Oh.

OH.

That explains SOOOOOOOO much. I'd always wondered why you were so interested in Socio-Political matters. It all makes sense now.

In that case, I guess both would be something you have a passion about. In which case, I'd say that this is a good stepping stone for you. All I can say is that you should try not to get too defensive. People are going to be set in their ways, especially if their reasons for their opinions are flimsy (and even moreso when they're anime fans).

But personally, I rarely go to the anime forum. Being from GBAtemp, I know exactly where I need to go to see cynics and negativity, and pretty much any anime forum is a hive for that (nothing against the members) I used to be really bad with dealing with negativity (something that GBAtemp made me realize, which is why I can identify with you. I'm sure what you feel now and what I did then are mostly the same), but I mostly got over it (through the same site). Still, not a fan of negativity, so I try to stay away from said hives of cynicism.

I do tend to do that with politics nowadays. As in know that people do hold their beliefs even more closely if something attacks their world view.

Though apparently the defensiveness transferred to anime instead.

I'm trying my best to learn how to cope with it anyways. So don't worry too much. But by now the defensiveness over SAO is a psychological reflex, its been 2 years of just people hitting on it so eh.

Though sometimes I feel all of this venting and defensiveness is just me releasing stress from other issues. There's a lot of things going on that would probably break others.

I don't like discussing anime because I get annoyed when I express an opinion and people disagree to the point of telling me my opinion is wrong. Also I'm a bit anxious about my tastes and haven't gotten to the "screw you I like what I like" stage in anything so when I talk about my tastes I get nervous about being judged for them.

142. I got solicited for a poll in person by the Republican Party of Minnesota today. Humored them. Told them Net Neutrality was my biggest issue at the moment. Basically implied the Republican Party was a no-go zone for me.

Anime discussions are too involved for my lazy memory that only remembers things when a trigger is mentioned.

I'm not knocking on old games.

Knowing don, he'll just try to worm his way out of this by insisting that having the Pokemon TCG Gameboy game counts. :P

Well, I do have 3 cartridges of that game...

And despite saying I have no money for games, I come home with 5 of them from GameStop:

Ace Attorney Investigations (DS)
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (DS)
Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (Wii)
Project X Zone (3DS)
BlazBlue Continuum Shift II (3DS)

Whoops.

At least I now have 5 separate Buy 2 Get 1 Free coupon codes. That I can only use between the 28th and the 3rd.

And a 50% bonus coupon for any trade ins I do the last week of August. Because trading-in games is totally something I'd do.

Looking at Crunchyroll now, I really hope it's possible to turn off the comments. I wouln't be able to resist the urge to scroll down to check them every video and while not YouTube level, they seem pretty annoying.

You could do what I do and just watch on your smartphone while it sits parked on WiFi... oh wait that's right you don't have WiFi you said.
