Silliness aside I don't think it is the sort of series that needs to finish like that. Well, I can only give opinion from the anime, I have no idea how the manga has gone.
 
800. Its 90 chapters of very minimal progress is finally getting it axed. Aside from the lack of romantic progress, it was pretty fun, though.

The whole goal of it was to encourage boys and girls to take relationships more slowly, but I kind of doubt it achieved that goal.

Probably. That shouldn't be a series' goal. Simply by creating likable characters and organic relationships they will achieve that same thing because, for otaku at least (Herbivores and NEETs especially), they are likely to desire what they see. The important thing, though, is that their desire to act on it relies on feasibility and reality.

That and people like characters and pacing. If its generally an interesting series, people will be down with it as long as its not drawn out or stretching out something that should have happened long ago. Of course, I have no idea what series you're talking about, but it goes without saying for...pretty much anything.

Fighting to make the world a more sexually responsible place while simultaneously getting to draw girls drooling. That man led a happy life until now.

Suddenly shoehorning a happy sex ending onto a series like this would be a bit off the mark, indeed. And it did manage to be gorgeously lewd at times using the most mundane components, so I can't even complain.

I never really got that vibe from it. I thought it was just an interesting take on sharing emotions and developing a relationship. Nor everything is propaganda.

Yup, that. Unless he has specifically come out and said that is what he was going for then I'm finding it hard to believe Don's post. I think he just came up with the unique twist for a common setting and ran with it. If that is what you picked up from reading the manga then you would pick up the same message from a lot of 'romance' manga series, especially those aimed at otaku male.

Anime fans sure can overreact to things in their shows. God, the recap episode in Utena would have made /u/ explode.

Kannagi one is probably my favourite otaku rage moment. I mean without that we wouldn't have had the writer's beautiful middle finger in the coming chapter.

I have actually seen it in person, for my reaction see my signature. It was chubby white weeb girls doing it though so yeah.

But hey, they have fun and there are certainly weirder street fashions and subcultures.

Heh, that's a little surprising. Maybe the message was stronger in the mango.

I haven't seen Ganguro face to face, but from what I can gather from the documentaries that I have seen, which explore and talk about the ganguro trend, the style is actually pretty popular with some particular age groups in Japan.
