Started reading the DxD novels and nearly died. I'm sure it's written like crap in Japanese but this translation is horrendous.

Spoiler:

All but one of the 17 novels are translated meaning there are still 12 volumes of new material for me to read. Guess I'll skip to vol 5 and see if it improves, if not I'll be forced into waiting for new animus with the rest of the plebs.

Terrible translations of books that aren't particularly well written in the first place. I can't write for ♥♥♥♥ but I'm sure I could knock out a LN of *insert trope ridden fanservicefest series that probably got an anime* quality in a week or two.

36. Well, when a translator stupidly whines in his or her translator's notes about how unbelievable it was that there were people who hadn't heard of Wikipedia in 2008, I'm going to be extremely prejudiced about their translation the rest of the way, because it then reads like it was done by someone with a superiority complex. And the notes for volume 2 just keep going downhill in quality. :\

EDIT: And now he's just whined about the fact that a FICTIONAL CHARACTER is a DBZ fan in a translator's note.

Could be worse. You could be reading Google Translate like with a lot of other untranslated nor heard of works. Also I think people are forgetting that Light Novels are supposed to be written in grade school reading level. That's why the Light Novel distinction was made in the first place.

Then again we're talking about "kiddy" video games, comic books and cartoon shows here.

Being aimed at a younger audience is not an excuse for poor writing. Of course it isn't going to be The Castle by Franz Kafka but it doesn't have to be a trope filled mess direct from the mind of a horny year 9 student. There are light novels away from the otaku sector that would probably be more comparable to some of the young adult fiction in the west, so we shouldn't judge completely on what we get. Also I'm sure sub par translations sully perfectly readable series from the otaku sector, I'm obviously not a snob about that.

Literal translations are the worst. If I wanted a lifeless, literal translation I'd use Google Translate.

The best translations are the ones where the enjoyment or creativity is > the original script. That's why I loved the dubs of Dragon Ball and Yu Yu Hakusho so much (apart from their great performances). And I know we're talking about Light Novels here, but even great concepts can bore the hell out of someone when delivered with a 3/10 translation.
