Do you think we'll battle the trial captains, or just do the trials?

What's been mentioned about trials is
-Trial captains are type specialists who give specific trials on the islands, often involving totem Pokemon
-Several trials are needed to challenge the island kahuna, the final challenge on each of the islands

Nothing has been mentioned about battling the trial captains themselves, though. Just the kahunas. The information about the trials has never included it and we've never seen a battle with one in the trailers. Could this mean the trial captains are just overseers of the trials and don't do direct battle with those doing the challenges? I really want to be able to battle them, but I'm starting to wonder if we will.

I hope so! This has been something that I've been questioning for some time myself. It would be logical for us to be able to battle them, but at the same time, they could just serve as guides to completing their trials. I really think it would be a missed opportunity if we couldn't battle them, especially with these guys having type specialities just like Gym Leaders.

Since they have type specialties like Gym Leaders, I do hope we get to battle them because as Blue said, it'll be a missed opportunity and horrible handling of the change in game formula.

Yes, it's already been confirmed that you battle the Trial Captains in what's called a Grand Trial after you complete the general trial, and after you defeat the Totem Pokemon. Olivia's Pokemon have already been revealed in a trailer and everything.

ETA: OH, my bad I mixed up the kahunas with the captains, but considering there are type specializations, it makes sense that they can battle. Four islands - four kahunas and four captains could mean eight total battles, so not entirely unlike the original league challenges.

Where has this been confirmed? Also Olivia is a Kahuna, not a Trial captain.

Man, I sure hope we do get to battle them, as the more boss battles the better in my opinion. Only battling the Kahuna's would be underwhelming. I'm really starting to doubt it though as according to GameXplain, Ohmori said that the Trails are more Human vs Pokemon instead of Human vs Human like the gym battles, obviously refering to Totem battles. I would love to battle Kiawe and his Alolan Marowak, though! (Also it seems Sophocles has a battle, whether or not that's his trial or a post-trial thing is yet to be seen).

There are five trial captains that we know about: Ilima, Mallow, Sophacles, Lana, and Kiawe.

Oh, cool! I didn't see that. Where was this shown? :o

In the trailer video introducing the captains, he says "Let's get started, right now, right here" and a youtuber named TheOneIntegral speculated that it would mean his trial is a battle, since we don't really have an idea of what he would be otherwise. It's all speculation though, nothing is confirmed.

If any of the Trial Captains turns out to specialize in Dark-Types and you can't battle them, I will be utterly speechless.

And honestly I think a human vs. human battle is just as important as a human vs. Pokémon battle, so regardless of their Type specialities I think you should be able to battle them all. I love being able to test my strength against all the cool trainers a region has to offer.

Battles aren't part of the formal trials, but I'm sure they will be available to battle at some point in the game.

On the topic of Trial Captains, it seems as though there (maybe) will be a Ghost-type Captain which was spotted in the trailer following the demo. I suppose it wouldn't be out of the question to battle them post-game if we're able to, but it would be ideal to battle them during their trial.

I think in the demo video we saw the Ghost and Flying Captain.

About the three characters shown at the end of the demo, I saw people speculating that, but apparently there's some kind of keychain or necklace (I forget which) that all other trial captains have been shown wearing that these characters don't have. I haven't noticed it myself because my attention to detail is hit or miss, but if it's true there's a common accessory trial captains have that these characters don't, I think it's more likely those three serve another purpose. I personally thought the one in the middle looked like a sailor, maybe someone who takes you between islands. I think the top one is someone who introduces Poke Ride with Mudsdale. I'm not sure about the bottom one but she definitely looks interesting and I'm looking forward to meeting her.

If that's true I could see it ending up that you can only battle the trial captains in the post-game or something like that.

Hopefully we'll get enough battles from Team Skull, Aether and Ultra Beasts to make up the difference.

On the other hand it could be the case that a battle with a trial captain is the first part of the trial and that the real boss is the totem Pokemon.

The only indication that I got of us being able to battle the Trial Captains was when we were shown Sophacles in an earlier trailer. His dialogue saying something about "Right now, right here" could infer that he's either asking for a battle or for you to start his trial there and then.

Honestly, I don't see why we wouldn't battle them if they gave us type specialties. It may not be in the story, but I think we will battle them regardless.

Humans and Pokemon are supposed to live and prosper in harmony. I just don't understand why the Trail Captains wouldn't battle at some point. To become a trial captain, you have to finish the trials, as explained with the first 4 we saw. So they do have battling experience. A trainer not battling with there pokemon, I think just goes against everything that Alola is about and the whole pokemon series in general.

I'm honestly thinking that's probably the start of his trial. See, what I'm confused about is why didn't we see some sort of "preview" of the Trial Captain's Pokemon like we did with the Island Kahunas? That wouldn't make any sense and seems to imply that the focus is more on the trials themselves than battling the captains.

And was confirmed that Kiawe has a Alolan Marowahk though.

I guess the Totem Pokemon is a test to see if you stand a chance against the Captain.

No, I believe we are battling Trial Captains. We may have to pass a trial initially and face them in battle later on, but I personally strongly believe we will battle all of them.
