How often do you use the Dowsing Machine?
I tap it every now and then and it really pays off - I was just behind Floaroma from the Fuego Ironworks and using the Dowsing Machine, I scored myself lots of Pokemon goodies like Max Revives and Hyper Potions, and like 5x Honey. Sometimes the items are a little obvious, like in strange patterns in grass patches.

I'll use it every now and then, but in general, it isn't very often I do; usually when I'm too lazy to advance, press A, repeat. A lot of the items are indeed obvious in their positioning, both others are not, such as the Great Ball that Lucas tells you there might be an item nearby, when he gives you the Dowsing Machine in Platinum.

Other than that though, I don't really find much use for it. I'd probably find more use for it if it was like the Underground, where fallen 'hidden' items above ground replenished after a certain length of time, though... XD

Every now and then I just run around and use it. It's quite hilarious. I agree with Gymnotide about the patterns are easily read.

    I have an answer :D

    Never...

    ..Just never.

What? So few people are using it? I use it all the time. :O Well, not all the time, since I've already searched through most places. I think the dowsing machine is really much more helpful than an Itemfinder, anyway. I keep it open especially in caves because they tend to have lots of hidden items, mostly in rocks. Also the place with a blizzard raging has tons of hidden items just in the middle of the snow fields.

I have a decent knowledge of Game Freak's 'style' of hiding items throughout the series so I usually have a good idea of where to use the Dowsing Machine. So I just hit it where I suspect them to have hidden something. Works well for me.

Sometimes they hide items in the middle of nowhere, though, like in the Floaroma flower patch -_-

I try to cover the entire region with it if possible.

Did you know there's an Odd Keystone in the Twinleaf Town pond? =3
No, no I did not. Thanks for tellin'.

My friend uses this all the time, and it wastes time. Somehow it takes her forever to find items.

I forgot all about it. I haven't used it since my first Diamond profile at the end of 2007.

That's part of their style. Heh. Big open spaces like that, with nothing else in them (dead end rooms, Floaroma, mud patches) are bound to have objects around.

I am not talking about blank tiling in the middle of a grass patch or anything. In the back of the Town, there is just a huge continuous flower patch with some paths in it and you can actually find Honey and other items in the middle of the flower patches with no pattern whatsoever.

But that *is* part of their style. :P

It's true anyway. Sometimes the items are hidden in very uneventful places with no special markings or anything, which is why I try to use it everywhere when exploring a new place.
