In Pokémon X and Y, we've seen the introduction of a new type group called "fairy," which is super-effective against dark, dragon, and fighting. This typing consists of Pokémon like Togekiss, Ralts, Mawile, Togepi, and anything else that might help reminding you of actual fairies. Anyhow, what are your thoughts on this? Were you expecting them to introduce this type? What was your reaction when they did? If it weren't fairy, then what other type would you have liked to see them create?

I wasn't necessarily expecting it to be Fairy, but I was hoping that it would help balance the existing types well. I was not disappointed at all with this, seeing as it is SE against Dragon, has a Dragon immunity, and is also weak to Poison+Steel which were two of the worst offensive types possible.

As I'm sure we all know, in the generations prior to Gen VI, Dragon was slightly OP. Considering it's only weaknesses were Ice and Dragon, you were pretty limited as to the things you could use to beat opposing Dragons(these being mainly Ice Beam, Ice Shard, and other Dragon moves). Ice as a defensive type is abysmal so most things using Ice Beam/Ice Shard weren't able to get STAB on those attacks. With the Fairy type being introduced, it allowed Dragons to have another check/counter to them which broadened the metagame quite a bit.

Poison and Steel as offensive types really had no place to be used. Poison attacks were used on Pokemon like Roserade and Amoongus occasionally. Steel was probably used a little more(Metagross, Scizor, and Escavalier were the main Steel types used in Gen V). It didn't really give notable coverage, but these Pokemon had high enough Attack to just wreak face with using their STAB.

Overall, I felt the Fairy type was a really good way to balance the existing types out, without changing too much. It lessened the greatness that once was the Dragon type and also brought a few other types, being Steel and Poison, into the metagame a little more.

Did not see it coming at all. I mean, the last time they added new types was Generation II, so while now it seems like a long time coming, I didn't even consider it as a possibility until Sylveon was announced. Definitely peaked my interest for X and Y, and I was already excited. Haven't used them too much, but from what I can tell, it was a smart play by Game Freak to try and even out the types. With the mechanics behind Pokemon battling, it's always going to be difficult to make the types even in terms of power, but Fairy really helped balance the scale with Dragons.

Well, they were a lot more rumours circulating around that a new type was coming during the advent of Gen VI, so I was rather prepared if a new typing was announced. I'll be honest though, I was expecting "Light" type before Fairy. So, I definitely was surprised when Fairy was announced. Regardless, it's a welcomed typing.

For some random thoughts about the Fairy typing. Just by looking at Fairy's offensive and defensive typing match-ups, it's easily one of the best typing there is now. Fairy is so anti-meta, it's insane. Resisting both Dark and Fighting are actually great resistances, and being immune to Dragon is fantastic. Resisting Bug was unnecessary though. Offensively, it's great. Being weak to only Poison and Steel is just amazing. Both are just awfully offensive typings, that only a few Pokemon actually use as coverage and STAB.

Of course, Fairy's shortcomings as of now is that there are a few truly good Fairy Pokemon. Besides Xerneas, Sylveon, Florges (kinda), Gardevoir (kinda), Togekiss (kinda), and Azumarill. A lot of the Fairy Pokemon don't have the raw stats and movepools to truly take advantage of the Fairy typing. But, if we ever get a influx of strong Fairy typed Pokemon in the next few generations, I strongly believe that they will be like the Dragon typed Pokemon of pre-Gen VI.

In the beginning, I was pretty skeptical of it - a lot of us were expecting a "light"-typing to complement dark-typing. Wasn't very let down, though, as fairies come in handy (Dazzling Gleam OP) and I'm especially a fan of Gardevoir's Pixelate, as it opens up even more moves to both it and Sylveon.

I loved the fairy type but I've seen a few of my friends with teams full of psuedo-legendaries hate them for making dragons weak. Although the pokemon that had the typing fit, I don't think there were enough good, raw fairy types. Things like para-flinch Togekiss leave the fairy aspect kind of useless.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts on this?
I needed some time to get used to this name, I was not too sure about, but the Fairy-type has grown on to me now. I like to use a Fairy-Pokemon whenever I can and I love to have Sylveon as a trusted partner in my team :3 I liked the idea of introducing a new type, because it took way too long imo.
What I don't like, however, is the fact that Dragon-Type moves have no effect at all. It's fine there is another Super-Effective move for Dragon, but WHY has to be the Fairy type immune to Dragon? It just doesn't make sense imo.

Were you expecting them to introduce this type?
I think it's about timethat finally a new Type is introduced into the Pokemon Franchise. It took some time before any new types were added, Dark-type and Steel-type being the last one back in Gen.2 and some better adjustments to other types like Bite being Dark instead of Normal, Flying being super effective against Bug/Grass/Fighting and so on (compared to the Gen.1 games).
I did expect they would introduce a new type since I was into the X and Y news from the start, but obviously in the beginning I did not know exactly what it would be. By the time they did introduce this new type as being "Fairy", I was not sure in the beginning if I liked this new name, because Fairy is also a term used in Fantasy that has nothing to do with Pokemon. Maybe "Light" would fit better in my opinion since we have "Dark" too and it's super effective against Dark as well, but meh... It has grown onto me know.

What was your reaction when they did?
Kinda like: awesome! A new type to be used in my team and battles if there is a Pokemon with this type I actually like, for example Sylveon and Dedenne.
But, there are some Pokemon who have this type that (for some) surprises me they even got this type, and others who should deserve this type in my opinion but actually don't. For example, Marill/Azumarill got the Fairy type, while Chansey/Blissey don't. The same for Minccino/Cinccino as well who, in my opinion, deserve this Type as well.

If it weren't fairy, then what other type would you have liked to see them create?
Like I said earlier, maybe "Light" instead of Fairy or just another type like... Space? I don't know xD

I wasn't expecting a new type in Gen 6 at all. I never really thought that we needed any new types after Dark and Steel were introduced in Gen 2. People complained about Dragons being OP, but y'all should've seen Psychic types back then. Though I guess I may be slightly biased in regards to the dragon thing....anyway, when they it was known that a new type was gonna be introduced, I had no idea what it was gonna be. I never really speculated on it either because I never saw anything to hint at what it would be.

At first I was worried that Fairies would be OP; with....how many types do we have now? 17? 18? its easy to screw it up. The type balance is a delicate thing. Fortunately, that doesn't really seem to be the case. Still don't understand why Fairy resists Bug but Rock doesn't. Or why they removed Steel's resistance to Ghost.

And does anybody find it somewhat ironic that rainbow jesus bambi Xerneas, the Pokemon of life, is so good at destroying stuff?

I was expecting a new type, especially once I saw Sylveon being revealed. Its appearance didn't suggest any of the existing types, which made it even more of a mystery. I'm happy about the presence of Fairy-types because Dragon-types were considered overpowered and they were often hard to counter. It was pretty much seeing 1st Gen Psychic-type all over again, it caused so much centralization that new types had to be created to balance it out.

I first thought most of the Fairy-types were weak in stats at first, but we still got some standout players through the likes of Sylveon, Xerneas, Florges, Klefki and old faves Mawile, Azumarill, Togekiss, Gardevoir and Clefable. Resisting Fighting was also a nice little niche there since I often found them to be very strong on their own with only two notable weaknesses until now, and while Dark-types aren't as much of a threat they are still quite common, although the one matchup I don't get is Fairy's resistance to Bug. The other weaknesses and resistances do make sense though.

I am hoping the next generation can introduce more strong, interesting Fairy-types with some new type combinations in the mix.

Back then I expected a new type, but even when Sylveon is out, I was still having doubts about the new Fairy type (I was also hoping for Light type too) until Game Freak announces Fairy as a new type, and I like it, because it's strong against Dragon Pokémon, which helps to balance the game.

I'm pretty glad the Fairy type exists. They give Poison and Steel a new advantage. I didn't really mind whatever type they were introducing, just as long as it was weak to Poison. The Fairy type did not disappoint.

Outside of my Poison love, Fairy has a lovable character all its' own. I see it as a sort of mischievous type, getting the Dragon and Fighting types to stop being so serious about themselves. An anti-meta, if you will. Always love those characters that have a light-hearted personality myself.
Also, it gave Granbull a new lease on life, so Fairy is up there with my favorites.

Towards the beginning, I had a lot of friends hate on the concept of a fairy type. Comments like "UGH, FAIRIES? POKEMON IZ OBVIOUSLY RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS!!1!" were not uncommon, and that is sad. Sad that people harshly judge a concept so quickly because it seems "girly." However, I was excited. Excited for something different. Something I didn't expect. The type was made for a reason, and that reason is to balance. Give the Dragon-type a weakness, give poison and steel type moves an advantage. To me, it makes sense. I loved the idea, and I love the result: a fantastic game.

Obviously, no one expected the exact type of fairy.
You know, it's pretty hard for me to put my opinion on fairy types. All the Pokemon seem to have little things that make them special. Mawile with huge power, serene grace, togekiss, prankster klefki and whim, BD Azu. And, while they are all great, the sets are predictable. I can't wait for more fairies so that we can get more diversity.

    Mine has to be Togekiss.
It's cute, strong, and so happy and cheerful.
    The perfect Fairy Type.

Eep ~ there's so much bold, and so many colors - these are some scary monsters, I want the nice sprites....

Like Togetic. (I too am really glad they made its line fairy type.) Eviolite togetic is fun, and it's the OG final form of Togepi.

Carbink is probably my favorite fairy though. Chillin' in that rock like that. Creepin'. Peepin'. Dual-screenin'.
