Free 2 Play games

There are games out there which are free to download, but often contain microtransactions for some things. These games, better known as F2P games have been getting more popular (especially League of Legends and DotA 2). More often the not they also get associated with the P2w (Pay to Win) tag cause of those microtransactions.

What's your opinion on F2P games? Do you think these games mainly are P2W or are there examples where there is no P2W issues at all? Do you play F2P games?

I don't generally play free-to-play games, as in my experience they generally fall into two categories: those with extremely competitive (and often hostile) online PvP communities that form the basis of the gameplay - and I don't care for online multiplayer unless it's co-op - or those that have an absurd number of microtransactions and are extremely poor quality and generally not fun to play unless you shell out what you'd pay for a game on a console...or more. I suppose I'm generalizing, but that's my experience with them...they're just not that good. Which isn't surprising, because nothing in life is truly free.

I did give Destiny of Spirits a try fairly recently though, and I didn't find that too unpleasant. Similarly, Pokemon Shuffle wasn't dismal, but it was a far cry from Link Battle. In every case, I've found that the experience of a F2P game can't match that of a paid one, so I'd rather just pay for one of the same genre and enjoy myself with that.

    I've only played 2 free-to-play games: Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.

TF2 wasn't pay-to-win, and the only stuff you have to pay for are cosmetics which do not affect gameplay in any way--plus you get weapon drops so really even a free-to-play player can get those shiny weapons. The community wasn't half bad but it's not great either--but to be fair, other games have FAR worse communities.

Dota2 isn't pay-to-win either. That game's all about skill and some luck (same goes for LoL) but making yourself look amazing is just great. I've also made great friends because of that game :p

I like free games as much as I like games you have to pay for. What I don't like are games, that are supposedly free, but full of microtransactions. I don't wanna be thrown out of the game because of some random pay wall appearing and I don't like having the feeling of only being able to use the most basic of the basic features, because everything else has to be payed or grinded for.

The main F2P games I play are Skylanders Lost Islands (due to me owning so MANY of the Figures) and Dragon City (mainly for my mother) on my Android Phone

i recall that I did not play Team Fortress 2 on my first laptop until it went free to play. Course after months of having mine be free to play, I decided to upgrade to premium status. Course all I had to do was buy an item in the in-game store.

I play F2P games sometimes, but it's not a long term thing. I don't look to make anything out of it and mainly just use it as a timewaster. Other games I play are timewasters, but most F2P games imo are about on the same level as a flash game in that I can play it for 15-20 minutes and then forget all about it. Yes most of them are considered p2w, but I don't really put any stock into that. It's still a game and you can get some general source of entertainment from it even if you don't have the supersuit that makes you invincible from everything for 2 minutes.

Free-to-play is fine in my book.

    Pay-to-win is not.

Games like Team Fortress 2 or Scrolls feature micro-transactions, but neither give people who pay money a large advantage.

I don't know much about it, but League of Legends seems to be somewhat pay-to-win.
