Its Japanese name, Asanan, comes from Asana (pronounced Aa-son), which means a pose or posture on yoga. The yogic pose in which Meditite is usually seated in its sprites (pre-Gen VI), is closest to the Sukhasana.
The first time I saw this 'mon was on Pokémon Pinball Ruby and Sapphire, where it initiates catching mode. The same also goes to its counterpart, Sharpedo.
