Google Chrome OS [Fall 2010]

    Also known as the Chromium OS; Google have announced that they are creating an Operating System, based on Linux which an open source OS. It is said to be optimised for the web and web applications which will make things easier, faster and more convenient for people using netbooks and laptops. Your opinions on the OS? Is it Google just trying to make more money by making a quick OS based on open source, or do you feel it will be all around beneficial?

    It's going to be gutless. The whole OS is substituting a Window Manager for a barely-stable browser. It may very well be a decent product, but at the end of the day, these Chrome netbooks are going to be overglorified smartphones.
     
    They announced this in 2009 I think. It's going to be targeted at netbooks, though, so I'm not too interested.

    What makes you think that this is any less of an operating system than Windows or Mac? All an operating system is at its core is an interface between the human user and the computer's hardware. Based on what I've read/seen on this, Chromium does exactly that.
     
    Was curious about this when it was first announced, now I'm warming to the direction they're heading in. Somebody has to experiment sometimes, it can't constantly be your generic OS all the time.

    Depending on how the reception for this goes, I might try and install it onto my old laptop just to try it out.

    Exactly why I think Google should just stick to making a decent Android tablet or something that can rival the iPad. There are a ton of people out there still waiting for a decent alternative.

    If anyone has the potential to make a solid iPad killer, it's Google. And if you ask me, Chrome OS just seems like a waste of time when they could be focusing all that effort on something that would probably be ten times more well-recieved in the end.
     
    from what I understand, if the bulk of the programing is on a remote server than it sounds almost perfect for netbooks with small ssd storage that I've seen a lot of people go ape**** about on newegg
     
    Google needs to stick with the Android OS.

    Chrome was a great idea, but Chrome OS isn't going to be the grandiose OS that everyone is hoping for. Power users are going to be drawn away because of the lower processing powers. Simply put, unless you have a netbook and mobile wireless, you're better off going with some other flavor of Linux if you want something free.
     
    Last I had heard Chromium was going to be their experimental 'cloud' OS. Has it changed from that since I've heard last?

    Yeah, it is a Linux kernel at heart, but the Window manager is essentially being replaced with Chrome on steroids. Sure, it's an Operating System, but so is Nokia's (And occasionally Samsung's) Symbian.

    My problem rests with the logistics of Cloud computing. Connection goes down? Bang. Quota runs out? SLLOOOWW. Application updates have issues? Everyone instantly has a dead program on their hands. What's that? You want to open a 7zip file that's been compressed? Sorry, it doesn't come by default, so you can't use it. A constant internet connection is potentially the most stupid thing they can do.

    They've been clever enough to dodge one of the major problems that Linux would face - drivers. By limiting Chrome OS to release on certain OEM netbooks, they're able to make sure that it they have the a limited hardware pool.

    Personally, I'm not going to bother. I like having a gutsy laptop. They're either limiting the functionality of a system by putting a tiny OS on there (which could suite some people) or just releasing pathetic hardware in the first place.

    Why don't they just give users a Light Linux Distro with a Cloud drive (similar to UbuntuOne, but better integrated), where they can backup files as they please. Then just improve the OS updates and call it a day.
