Home Again
Alex, horse in tow, walked through Spider's Hollow at an easy pace. He'd been moving at a fast pace for days with his only real rest in recent memory being interrupted by Veralice's henchman. The town had come alive since he'd arrived. Bounty hunters stood at notice boards or headed towards Janet's agency, traders and shopkeepers were preparing for a day peddling their wares and at the small train station a group of miners were crowding angrily around a man. It seemed that there was some sort of hold up on the tracks keeping them from an easy journey into Gilded Brook. Alex figured some idiot had robbed a train or something, but that usually didn't hold things up particularly much.
Alex didn't spare much thought towards the unfortunate men, instead letting his thoughts drift back to Elias and the mysterious Flint again. He generally wasn't the type to be sentimental, but he'd come to like Elias, cowardice and all, in the short time he'd known the man. He hoped that this Flint wasn't dragging him towards his death. It seemed doubtful an old man like Flint would be after any particularly big catches, but Alex had known Janet long enough to know underestimating the elderly in a world rife with magic was not advisable. Still, Elias had survived an attack that had nearly cost Alex his life only hours before. This was probably going to be nothing compared to that.
"Look at me worrying like a housewife" he mumbled under his breath "That's a habit I better not get into."
It wasn't long before Alex's leisurely pace brought him to the familiar wooden house where he rented a room. He lead the horse to the small stable that sat behind the structure and into one of the stalls. Two other horses were also inside as well as an empty stall that was currently filled with rusty riding gear and aging farming equipment that had never actually been used. Alex made sure the horse had access to hay and water before trudging back towards the house through the dry dirt.
With a creak, Alex pushed open the front door. Immediately he was greeted by the smell of toasted bread. Steeling himself for the effort he was about to have to exert, Alex walked into the kitchen to see the tidy-looking Lily Crowley slowly eating her way through a slice of the aforementioned bread whilst her daughter, looking as unkempt as Lily did tidy, ravaged a bowl of what seemed to be a sort of stew like a starving urchin. Both froze and looked up at Alex as he entered, the former with a warm, motherly grin and the latter with an almost scary enthusiasm and curiosity.
There's no way this kid is going to not end up a bounty hunter. I hope Lily doesn't blame me.
"Well look who's home." Lily said, her voice teasing "I was beginning to wonder if you'd bitten off more than you could chew this time." She was being jovial, but it was obvious that this was a legitimate concern for the woman - one that Alex chose to ignore.
"No need to worry about that. I wouldn't dream of dropping dead before paying my rent."
Alex helped himself to a serving of the breakfast stew, pleased to find it was still warm. He ate quietly with the Crowley's, paying no heed to Burke's absence. The portly man was an early riser and was probably already at his tavern preparing to serve travelers their breakfast and alcoholics their first glasses of liquor for the day. Unfortunately, it was not so easy to ignore Sienna's staring. He'd even been careful to make sure he wasn't covered in blood this time, but it seemed that wouldn't be enough to make his absence seem uninteresting.
"Yes?" he sighed
"Well, what happened?" the child asked
"Shot some people, met a drunkard and made some money." Alex responded nonchalantly, wanting this conversation to be over quickly.
"Details!" the girl ordered, ignoring her mother's reproachful look.
Alex took another mouthful of the meal before relenting. He gave a brief description of his prolonged chase after Dead-Eye and his gang, explained how he'd met Elias and come back into contact with the weirdly altered Emmett and finished with his skirmish with Veralice's follower. He left out the part where he'd nearly died, not wanting to deal with Lily if that was brought up.
"What-" Sienna began again, but was cut over by her mother
"Enough already. You've got studying and chores to do, so clean up and get to work." Alex shot Lily a thankful look before finishing his meal and moving to help clean up after the morning meal.
Following the ordeal of interacting with his landlady and her kid, Alex headed up the stairs towards his small room. He was just now becoming aware of how tired he was and how much his arms and legs were aching from consistent galloping around. He dumped his guns on top of a cupboard and tossed his coat on the floor, a heavy thud and clanking noise emanating from the ammunition concealed inside as the garment hit the floor. Alex flopped onto the bed, briefly taking in the various wanted posters and news articles stuck to his walls before focusing on the wall to his right. It was almost entirely covered with information relating to Veralice's movements and attacks. He knew that Jebediah had been following the abomination himself, but Alex had learned patience was also an important skill when it came to hunting a particularly formidable prey. He'd extrapolated several locations where the demonic Big Bad was likely to visit next and his encounter with the water-user the previous night between Ironhaven and the Chasm had all but confirmed in his eyes where he needed to go. He'd spend the rest of that day resting and making any preparations he needed, but the next morning he'd be off towards Wrench. A violent grin spread across Alex's face as he contemplated the prey he was about to go after.
