Held Items

Gen II introduced the idea of held items, which are items that Pokemon hold and use, some when certain conditions are met. What and how much of an impact do you think this had to the games?

Held item does make sort of an impact, especially when battling. One of my favorites would be Life Orb; this one gives boost to both of your offensive stats, while sacrificing a bit of your HP every turn. It could be very helpful if you're planning to use the Pokémon for sweeping purposes. :] Other than that, I also like Leftovers.

I think held items have a big impact on the Pokemon games. They allow for diverse strategies and gameplay, and are extremely useful. For in-game items, Lucky Egg has to be one of my favorites, since it makes training so much easier. As for held items during battles, i would say Life Orb or Leftovers are the ones i like most

Held items pretty much revolutionized competitive battling. A lot of Pokemon are usually only viable because of their held items. Ironically, even strategies like Acrobatics, which don't rely on items, still rely on items haha.

I really like the concepts of Absorb Bulb, Cell Battery, Snowball, and Luminous Moss (could be more, don't remember). Although they're never really used, I kind of want to use it just to see how my opponent would react.

In terms of competitive battling, they obviously made a huge impact. However, in my own experience in normal gameplay they really make almost no difference at all. I almost never give my team held items unless my bag is too full.. In fact, the only game I occasionally do give my team held items in is Black and White, just because many useful held items are found pretty easily and can help when dealing with the Elite Four.

My thoughts are basically the same as Gulpin's. For normal in-game play, held items, while nice, aren't terribly useful (except for Lucky Egg and Amulet Coin) since you either can't get the useful ones easily (like how you can't get a Choice Band until after beating the Elite 4 in D/P/Pt or how Focus Sash is a consumable item) or they're just plain not necessary since the Pokémon main story is usually not difficult.

But for competitive battling, damn are they useful (well, some of them anyway, which is why I hate the Item Clause in VGC and Battle Spot).

When it comes to the hold items, they were certainly a good idea to add to the Pokemon games. As for my favorites, they are Amulet Coin, Lucky Egg, Quick Claw, and Leftovers. Now for why I like each one. I like the Amulet Coin since I like getting double the amount of winnings after trainer battles. As for the Lucky Egg, it is quite useful for leveling up a Pokemon. Now for the Quick Claw, like the idea of having a slower Pokemon getting the first attack in. As for Leftovers, they are quite useful for healing a Pokemon after each round of battle.

They had a Big impact on the games, It could change a whole battle.
I never Use them that much though, don't like it.

Held items are very useful even in non-competitive play. When it still was very much a new thing back in gne 2, I'd attach berries to my Pokemon all the time just to see them activate in the middle of battle. Plus of course to make use of the actual effect of the item. I still make Pokemon hold items all the time , particularly the Amulet Coin and Exp. Share in gens 2 to 5. They're so many useful in-game effects to them too.
