Help choose the next new default theme

Don't you think people should know better than to browse the internet on anything under iPod touch/iPhone kind of power?

Other smart phones have caught up to those in capabilities and hardware. For some of us, it's not the power of the phone that's the issue, but rather the speed of the network we're on. >_< And it's not exclusive to mobile devices. Not everyone has a minimum of 4 Mbps for their speed.

I browse frequently in an area only covered by Edge technologies on my HTC G2 because I basically live in the middle of nowhere as far as 3G is concerned.

Well then... that's either your, or your carrier's problem. They are mobile carriers, not ISPs.

I'm aware that PC and myself can do nothing about a carrier's 3G coverage range.

However, there are those who aren't as fortunate as myself to have a 4-10 Mbps connection through their ISP. A slower loading page would deter new members.

I do find it imprudent to make a couple of seconds a factor in judging a site, especially when you know your internet connection isn't the best.

This might be just NZ internet, I don't know, but most of the people I know don't bother using the internet on their phones as New Zealand internet is too overpriced and takes way too long to load, and that is just Google. Imagine what it would be like for a PC skin? It would murder my phone and others without as fortunate internet access.

Well, clearly you don't know how important cross-platform accessibility is in web design. That is one of the first things they hammered into my head in my (X)HTML class last semester.

Route 167 gets my vote.

But if you want a clean simple theme then go with Forever Standing. It was the default theme when I joined. (and it what I use when on my phone) It was actually one of the reasons I joined. (I liked the pretty theme. xD)

It isn't just a couple seconds. On the thread in computers and technology where people were posting their broadband speeds, some had as low as 40Kbps! That's a hundred times slower than the speed you need to only wait a couple seconds.

If internet speeds are that low, that's honestly not PC's problem. It'll not only be PC, but hundreds of thousands of other sites that will load slower in such 40kbps speeds.

And may I remind you people that the whole reason PC's server needs to keep drinking Red Bull is the ROM Hacking section? Where you need tools and programs not available in mobile phones? Of course, because that hasn't been considered. Most new members are in it for the ROM hacks, and MUST be on a computer, therefore require decent hardware and internet connection. Other people who will find this site will be just as likely to be on a computer than to be on a phone. And those on a phone or on a slow connection KNOW the risk they have with medium to high detail and sophisticated websites, which are becoming the standard nowadays. There is absolutely nothing wrong with sacrificing a matter of dozens of kilobytes.

Eehh... season-wise, it makes sense. But after that it's spring and summer, of which then it should be Route 167.

PokeLink 2.0 is pretty much like Pokelink 4 blue, but with lighter/nicer blues and was the default for April Fools 2006. Try it out!

That brings up a good question: is the theme going to change with the seasons? And why are we sticking to one theme all of a sudden?

People needing a computer to rom hack has nothing to do with the amount of people viewing the forum on mobiles.

I'm making a game, which involves having to have a computer like rom hacking does. That doesn't make me think when I'm not at my PC "I need a computer to make my game, so I'll just wait to see if I have any notifications or new posts on my thread instead of using my iPhone."
The rest of the rom hackers/game developers may want to wait longer than they have to, but that's unlikely.

And apart from having a "simpler" faster loading style, having one as default which isn't widescreen would be better. Then the text wouldn't be too smal to read on mobiles.

One of the most annoying aspect of mobile browsing is loading a bunch of photos in signitures. And the drop down menus. Use forever standing and go into your browser settings and find the setting that blocks photos.

If we could get a theme based on pokelink 4 that does not load avatars and signitures that still looks good on smart phones. The mobile version of pc right now is too boring

EDIT: Just tried the "Simplistic (Beta)" It works perfect for mobile browsing.

You can turn off avatars, signatures, and images on any theme, but it doesn't stop the images from the forum skin from loading, which is why I'm not keen on Route 167 as my first choice for the new default, because that background image takes a bit to load at slower connection speeds.

only problem with that is that setting is global meaning when I browse on my computer it would be without images. We need a theme for that, and simplistic works great for me.

I actually would change my vote to Route 167 if some sort of device detection were implemented that changed the default based on the device connecting in.

We've been looking into auto-detecting user agents for mobiles but so far the only decent solution FORCES only one mobile style to that device with NO ACCESS to the style switcher.. IMO not a viable option for most of our users. :(

Yes the theme will change based on seasons, whim of the admins, or whatever reason we can come up with.. for THIS change, I decided to ask our supporters to pick the next default theme.. that is all.
