  • Did he seriously only get 5 coins from all that? Oi... European Platinum gains, here we come...

It looks like the demon child of Minesweeper and Sudoku.

YES! I'm actually good at Minesweeper, now I DON'T have to buy coins and use my money on better things, like dolls. :P But seriously, I don't really care. The only time the game corner is useful was in FRLG and RBYG for Porygon. And that's it.
EDIT: From what I can see in the video, it just gives off the number of Voltorb and the number of points you can get in each column/row. It's basically like PicrossDS, or its many other names, I think it's called "Tsunami" or something.

5 coins from JUST that? He did next to nothing, he was just showing how it worked. If you think about it logically, there will be a bonus for clearing the board, and it multiplies and so on each new board you make it to.

I imagine this was confirmed when it was first revealed, "As you progress without hitting any voltorbs, the levels get harder" as quoted from Serebii's article on it. So you keep hitting multipliers, the more coins you get, progress as far as you can and quit when you think you can go no further.

EDIT: I'm gonna have to see how these multipliers actually do work, from what I can tell in the video where he won 5 coins, he achieved:
    x1
    x2
    x2

So for level one the base value of a correct square is 1 coin, and it really cant stay the same way through other levels as it'd eliminate the point for multipliers and the incentive to continue going despite the risk.

So looking at what I'm predicting:

    Consecutive board number = X
    1 * X = X
    2 * X
    3 * X

Although a prediction, I'm confident this is the system they are using.

  • As from what I've seen through the video by Jake and the HQ screenshots, the new Voltorb Flip doesn't seem all that terrible. It's still lame how they had to take away apart of what was from the originals and change it, but at least they didn't leave it out completely for other regions like in Platinum for Europe. :\ Though, the game looks intriguing and doesn't look all to difficult, this idea still remains subjective.

It isn't a major deal to me though as I never took much interest in the Game Corner anyway. If anything, it would only be a place I go to if I might have ever needed anything through coins (which a handful of the times I would just purchase) or if I just roamed around the game with nothing to do I might take a visit and try out my luck. Other than that, I'm not like, "OH NOEZ, they removed the slots, AHHH!" :|
i didnt know pokemon hg/ss where already out in korea
Yup, it was released on the 4th of February (just two days ago actually). So, you'll be seeing more and learning new information (from whatever we don't already know) on the games as time progresses. With the US release date not too far off, it's only a matter of time before everything is really known, considering abundant news has been released recently.

I've talked to the person in question and the highest amount of coins he's gotten from a game is 18. D:

Yes, I do know that eventually the amounts should raise up, but it's Minesweeper. There's no way to be perfect in it. At some parts, it's just as bad as gambling as there are times when two spaces have a chance at a mine and there's no way to know other than one of the two last spaces have a mine in them.

Ehh, at least the building matches the new room to a degree, even if it is all super-expensive looking on the inside. Maybe it's just the big ol' diamond sign on the front.

  • I figure that the US version should have slots. The worst the ESRB could do is give it an E10+ rating, which would vastly benefit online play anyways ;P

Although in actuality a 10+ would be more accurate of the majority of their market, Nintendo will always aim for the every age rating to relate to their target market (young children). Some parents do pretty much follow and strictly let their kids play only the age rated games suitable for them, and that is exactly what they want to keep in mind.

Slots were removed to keep the game at a suitable rating for all to play. It was argued that the slots machines in the Game Corner pertained gambling influence and therefore was banned from the EU versions, reason why the EU Platinum had disabled the Game Corners in Veilstone City completely.

To bypass this, Nintendo had the slot machines for all the games outside of Japan (including Korea as well) altered to the newly introduced mini-game, The Voltorb Flip, which is pretty much a Pokémon-related version to the game, Minesweeper. Sucks yes, but at least they didn't remove it completely and still offered something in its place.

  • Well, that's a plus. I'll take just about anything over a slot machine. Slots are the most boring of games, in Pokemon and in real life. I never even bothered with the Game Corner in Platinum.

Looks like one reason to prefer the non-Japanese version.

  • Meh, seems importing the games just became unnecessary. Good to know in a way, doesn't change the fact that this sucks.
It's not that I liked the gambling thing very much, I just can't understand why they suddenly jumped to the conclusion that gambling in Pokémon games could possibly lead to gambling addiction. Gambling was always illegal for minors wasn't it. Has an important number of old fans reported they became addicted because of that? Do the guys (whoever has made the decision to forbid it) actually think so poor of childrens minds? It's not like they're completely retarded.
Actually I'm more annoyed that they think so poor of children than I am about the fact the original has been changed or that the traditional slots are missing. Oh well...

  • I always found that I enjoyed going to the Game Corners for things like the Card Flip game and the Roulette. I didn't really use the slot machines that often, but I don't think that they should have been removed from the game just because they thought it was a bad influence for children to be "gambling." I always believed that if the EU (and wherever else) wanted to cut down on gambling related issues, they should start by taking Poker shows and ads off of TV, which have seemed to be increasing rapidly over the last few years, and not worry about slot machines to win prizes in a children's video game.
