A lot of you guys are basing a Pokemon's potential on its stats, but stats really aren't the main thing. Lilligant isn't awful, it just has specific niches, such as Quiver Dance, Own Tempo+Petal Dance, Powder Moves, Teeter Dance, Worry Seed, Fake Tears, Charm, Healing Wish, Aromatherapy, etc. Like most Grass-types, its a supporter naturally. If you don't want to use HP, Sleep Powder+Dream Eater isn't a terrible option. Every Pokemon has potential no matter its stats, with some specimens just requiring a bit more creativity and a lot less complaining. Furthermore, GF attempted to remedy some "deficiencies" with certain Pokes this gen, with Magcargo getting Shell Smash and Piloswine getting Eviolite and Thick Fat. I can assume that the majority of you don't peruse Pokemon movepools and abilities for potential strategies that might combat a Pokemon's seemingly low stats and capitalize on its higher stats, but do yourself a favor and never write off a Pokemon you like as weak. Just flex your creative capacity.
Here's an example: Furret gets Frisk as a DW ability. One might say, "Terrible Pokemon, terrible ability." I said, "Fantastic." Covet, Fling, Trick, U-Turn, and an item such as Light Ball or Iron Ball is all you need to completely disrupt an opponent's item-related strategy in a competitive battle.
The moral of the story, as said by Karen of the Indigo Elite Four: "Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
Ah, one last thing. To the OP: It isn't Garby's fault (and I can refer to it as Garby because it is also a favorite of mine) that you used it the wrong manner. Perhaps its possible to use him as a Toxic Staller but, to me, he has no natural inclination to be such based on his stats. Don't discount him just because he's a poison who doesn't Toxic stall. How about a Rock Polish+Stench+Rock Blast combo? Each time you hit with RB, there's a 10% chance to flinch the opponent. Gunk Shot, Curse, Spikes, Clear Smog, Explosion, Acid Spray+some great Special Attacking moves, Recycle (such a neat-o move), Toxic Spikes, Stockpile, Amnesia, Payback: I can't even begin to understand why you would limit him to being a boring Toxic staller when both its movepool and stats beg you to make him something else, such as a lead (perhaps suicide?) or an attacker, whether special or physical. I'll say it once more: get creative! Using Pokemon that others deem "horrible" but in reality are awesome just makes you a more intelligent and skillful battler.
