So, I was just thinking..how do all of you protect your computer? What programs do you use? Do you do anything to protect them? By this I mean, how do you protect yourself from malware and hackers, not from your little brother logging onto your account. D:

I browsed through all the pages here and I found nothing even similar to this..so..welcome! ◕‿‿◕

    On Windows:
    a. Hide behind a router that stealths my ports
    b. Shut down half of the services as many leave Windows open to attack
    c. Run avast! all the time
    d. Browse in a different Firefox profile with half the functionality disabled if I'm anywhere I don't trust
    e. Data partition in case my system gets corrupted

    On Linux/BSD:
    a. Hide behind a router that stealths my ports
    b. Don't log on as root unless offline

    On Linux (Ubuntu):
    - *copies twocows description* Hide behind a router that stealths my ports.
    - Encryption.
    - I know how hard it is to get a virus on Linux, but I am paranoid..so I run Avast every night. xD;
    - Don't log on as root unless needed.

I don't go places I'm not familiar with or sound weird. I also have both regular firewall and a reverse firewall so that it alerts me any time a program tries to send out information. (I also don't download anything from a source I don't trust.

I run Commonsense 2009. Works well.

First up, both of my own computers are Macs. This cuts a lot of the rubbish out of my system xD I am not one of those Mac users that thinks they won't get anything though, and I am currently running a free antivirus, ClamXAV.

Our PC has ESET Smart Security, which I think is the best security suite out there - we use it at work, and we're the government xD it has a really small resource footprint and it's just fantastic.

Also all our computers are sat behind a router, which acts as a hardware firewall ;D

I use Sophos Anti Virus which is a very good protector :)

For software, I use Avast! and Winpatrol, and keep a copy of HijackThis! just in case. I also keep UAC on.

However, my first line of defense is my knowledge of what I should and shouldn't download. ^^

    No need for anything here:

    1. I use an operating system that has such a small user base, it's like a group of vintage car enthusiasts using it, so no one writes viruses for it, and anyway even if someone did it could only muck up my data and soft-loaded programs, and not the operating system as thats stored on a ROM chip :D

    2. I also use Ubuntu Linux, so no protection really needed.

Both my desktop use Online Armor and ESET NOD32, so I know I'm using high quality protection without a worry of a little nasty sneaking in. As well as a little Commonsense 2009 on the side

I don't. I just exercise common sense and experience.

It's like PTO-shaft covers being a legal requirement here... why bother? Rule of thumb: simply don't go near it when it's spinning.

I also run Commonsense 2009. Works pretty well for the most part.

for those nastygrams and other downloaded file issues that sneak by, I use NAV 2009

with my Windows XP, I deactivated the remote desktop and sharing. I also have just the general windows firewall, and have Avast installed. Additionally I have noscript on firefox to prevent any ad-based malware due to the growing number of flash viruses. Proud to say that for 3 years my system has not been comprimised. Also helps that I live alone now so my sibs don't use the comp.

Ever since NoScript started trying to mess with Adblock Plus' configuration, I haven't been using it. I prefer ABP over NoScript anyway; it blocks malicious ads without being overly annoying.

Firstly, I am suspicious of anything I download, and only download from trusted sites. Then I scan them with McAfee and Trend Micro Antivirus. That just about does it, even though I've been infected only a few times before.
