1st Gen I Could Never Trade my Machoke to Evolve it...

I'm wondering if the virtual console versions of R/B/Y will find a way to implement trading into it, since back during the days of R/B/Y, we needed a cable to do that.

So, how do you think they'll work around with this in the rerlease of RBY to the virtual console?

The description for the ports in the Nintendo eShop states that battling and trading will be available via local wireless [more info].

I was kind of hoping for online trading... but beggars can't be choosers.

Yep, seems like local wireless is the way they're going. I agree that I wish they had online trading (I don't know if I'll know anyone in person who will be playing these games), but this is still better than nothing. I plan on getting games on multiple systems (I have a 3DS and a 3DS XL) so I can trade with myself to get around some of the limitations of non-wifi trading.

I must say, though, despite knowing people who had the games in real life back in the late '90s, my friends and I hardly ever actually traded. Almost all of us got the same version (Red), with the exception of one guy whose game became so badly glitched that the rest of us wouldn't get within ten feet of it with a link cable. I obtained trade evolutions later on, once I had more games (mainly after Gold came out; I did my GSC Pokedex, then had my internal battery on Gold where the Pokemon were located die, and then decided to go back and do Red, mainly trading with myself and one friend who still played).

It's terrible to hear there will be a lack of wi-fi, but at least it's nice to see these re-releases implementing wireless local trading and battling which we all knew was an improvement on its own when 4th Gen introduced it.

Definitely glad we're seeing an improvement in regards to trading methods. That is, from cords to local wireless (which I suppose is only natural considering the times we are in), but it would have been nice to see global trading available. With how close you have to be for local wireless, we may have as well had new cords introduced with the games to celebrate their release on the VC just for nostalgic purposes. Albeit, other than my sister who isn't likely to purchase the games, I won't have anyone to trade with anyway.

Just as an FYI, there is an in-game Machoke (for Cubone) trade on Route 5 in Yellow. You're stuck with a silly nickname, but at least it's a way to get Machamp without having to trade with another game.

ROCKY is the real MVP. at least i think that's what they named it.

Well there's the wireless connection implemented...

But yeah, back in Gen I it was almost impossible for Haunter, Graveler, Kadabra and Machoke (Machamp is obtainable in Yellow though, as Betty said). I was extremely happy when I got the chance to evolve my Kadabra into an Alakazam!

Those cords were a pain, they never worked properly for my brother and I. It was constantly a battle of, "ok, hold it in and let's hope it connects and doesn't disconnect while the Pokemon are mid-trade." So I'm happy that commemorative cords won't be back and we'll at least have wireless trading :P
