Inspired by whatever happened to Muffin (although I cannot judge as I don't know the full story and who's telling the truth etc.), a question popped into my mind. What if, through no fault of your own, your account was hacked and the hacker proceeded to post profanity etc. etc. and you ended up getting banned? You wake up, have a shower, make a nice mug of tea and decide to quickly check your subscribed threads on PC and BAM, you are permanently banned overnight. Is there any hope of getting your PC access back and, if so, what course of action should you take?

Well, staff can see IP addresses. So, if it was, in fact, not you messing around then you would be un-banned and whoever hacked you will be banned themselves.

Can't some IP addresses be shared by more than one person? I remember once finding a site that looked a lot of fun, I tried to join but it said my IP address had been permanently banned - I had never even joined! How could this have been possible?

This happened to Neti a long time ago, so it is a possiblity. He got notifyed by me and some other people before he got banned though. I think the mods could sort it out most of the time, but sometimes they might slip up. not trying to say the mods aren't good, it's just that everyone makes mistakes.

I've not heard of shared IPs, but maybe it's a possibility. What I have heard of is the actual service provider being banned, but that's unlikely. If you were using a proxy, I think sites can ban well known ones as well. Could have been any of those things, but I suppose it could get to the point were there are no unused addresses :|

What if my younger bro comes on and gets me banned he is using the same computer therefore same ip address is there any way to prove im innocent

I guess not, but you can prevent it happening by threatening to open his eyes to a world of hurt if he ever did so.

Nope. Solution: don't tell him about the site, or make sure not to make your account log in automatically.

The staff will also look at the posts, too. If there's no similarity in posting style, then they're more likely to believe you.

Essentially, you are responsible for ALL activity from your IP address, so dont let anyone get you IP banned from here, because more often than not, it is harder to prove your IP innocent if for example; your neighbor logs into your wireless internet connection and repeatedly trolls the site...or your friend/family uses your computers to troll here.

That being said, it isnt impossible to be unbanned if someone used your IP and got banned.

Always take basic precautions so that ONLY YOU can log into your account. Never leave yourself logged in to a shared computer and always type your password out on them, dont let the browser 'remember' the password

    Dear Anthony,

Please stop abusing me by bashing your head into me. It hurts my feelings and I'd really rather you didn't.

    Sincerely,
    Your desk

    This happened to me once.

As long as you have enough evidence that you're account was hacked, you can get your account back. If it was a member, they will get struck with the ban-hammer.

    Remember, EVIDENCE, is your friend.

Its a mods desk. theyre special :p

Anyway I guess just try to be careful. Plus you'd need the hacker to something really bad to get banned so fast. Overnight ban isnt really too bad imo.
