[PokeCommunity.com] I'm walking on Super Mario Suuuunshine

Look what I randomly found in my closet one day! Cats, did anyone play or remember Super Mario Sunshine for Gamecube? Basically, you control Mario and a machine that he is equipped with - F.L.U.D.D, where you try to clear your name of dirtying Isle Defino of the graffiti made by Mario's "dark counterpart". Along the way, you gain Shine sprites for finishing levels to help restore Isle Defino to it's former glory!

So again, has anyone played it, or at least heard of it? If so, what did you think of it? Would you like to see some sort of sequel? Any other thoughts? Feel free to share!

I haven't played Super Mario Sunshine, but I've seen a bunch of playthroughs of it, and would personally love to try it out sometime. From what I know, it's been kind of in the same situation as Wind Waker was, where one half of the fanbase practically worshiped the game, and the other hated it to death. And I can definitely understand both sides, since I reckon a lot of the haters were hoping for a new Super Mario 64 game, and instead received this. I mean, F.L.U.D.D definitely does seem out of place, but I feel like the decision to make Mario Sunshine as it is, is kinda what defines Nintendo. They try to be innovative and present some new and features each time (for the most part, since New Super Mario Bros. is pretty much the Nintendo equivalent of CoD :p), with most of the hate mainly being generated from the fact that the game isn't like the old used to be. I'm pretty sure Super Mario 64 also got some backlash because of how far it ventured off from the 2D platforming formula, but I doubt it was on the same scale, considering how it was a step that most people could agree on being in the right direction. But with Sunshine they didn't venture into another realm, but rather altered with the mechanics that people already knew and loved, where some welcomed the change, and some just despised it.

Of course I can't say anything for certain, but that's just what I've really come to notice. As for a sequel; I don't know about a direct sequel, since the idea already seems to have been abandoned, but I'd love to see a return to Delfino Isle at some point. And the whole game revolved around Bowser Jr. or w/e he's called trying to kidnap Peach because he believed she was his mother, and Bowser already explained that wasn't the case, so yeah. Can't really see anything like that happening :p I'd love to see him make a return though, just with another storyline :p

Heck yeah I played this game, I think I bought it at launch. Man, Sunshine was easily the most soothing Mario game, even if it could be punishing (I'm lookin' at you, Sand Bird). The music was very mellow and often experimental, the enemies were new and the mechanics were fresh. It was a great game...and talking about it like this kinda makes me want to play it again.

It's also one of the most controversial Mario games because of how far in left field it was, but I think it was a success at making a new innovative entry in the series.

...So yeah, I liked it. I don't really want a sequel, though. Sunshine is one of those games that, because of its concept and its setting, it really should be the only game of its type. That's why it works, because there's really no other game like it in the Mario series.

I've had this game for years and every time I tried to pick it up I wound up putting it back down again soon after. Finally got around to beating it earlier this year.

The camera was an abomination, there was a huge lack of variety in level design, blue coins were a cop out for "additional" content, the camera was horrendous, the voice acting was atrocious, the difficulty curve was more like a spastic zigzag, the camera was godawful, the forced progression (having to do the first seven levels of each world to unlock the final level) left little room for you to pick and choose your path to the end, and did I mention the camera?

Yeah, I really didn't like Sunshine. There were a few stages that I really enjoyed but it mostly ranged from "meh" to controller-throwing frustration and tedium.

The pachinko level is one of the worst levels I've ever played. And then I hit the sand bird! So yeah, this game is a blemish on a perfect track record. Hopefully Nintendo has learned their mistakes from this.

I was younger when this came out (duh), but I actually irl had a fear of graffiti, so the concepts and gameplay actually scared me a bit. I didn't actually play it, I watched my siblings play, but it did seem pretty interesting. It'd be one of those games that I'd probably pick up one summer and play it for a couple days/beat it and never look at it for another 20 years.

lol, you just reminded me that I have this game! xD

even today, it remains one of my favorites. it had that good balance of fair and challenging levels. i still remember how many times i failed that pachinko level, then found a strategy that works every time.

the level i hated the most was definitely the sand bird one. it was basically a trial and error level, but annoying nonetheless.

i liked the free-control camera, though sometimes it would spaz out. the music was incredible, and the concept was so bizarre i couldn't help but enjoy it (Mario with a water pack? Who knew?).

Mario Sunshine is the only Mario game I have not completed 100% due to some of the secert shine sprites being so annoying. I really disliked doing the Sand Bird shine as I kept falling off when it turned. I enjoyed the Piana park level the most especailly the robo bower roller coaster boss.

This game could have been a LOT better had it not been rushed. As of now, it's fun but heavily flawed.

I'd love to see a sequel just because I think Sunshine has huge potential yet to be realized.
(for the most part, since New Super Mario Bros. is pretty much the Nintendo equivalent of CoD :p)
No.
