Coming from a person who lives in pretty much the only developed sect in the arid midwest, I'd largely have to agree with you excluding Colorado Springs, Denver, Provo, Salt Lake City, Albequerque, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, and… that's about it. Everything else is pretty much cowboy territory from what I've seen, and by no means meager. Lovely natural tourist attractions, they are. :DIf I had to take a guess, I'd say it's because the Midwest is largely rural and thus less "cultured", and that's where the term "pop" comes from.
