Intelligent redesign of the forum headers

I saw the earlier thread about the design which was strangely closed in a hurry... and instead of asking for a hide/show feature I'd suggest a reworking. By "intelligent redesign" I mean having some CSS work to where they stretch/shrink to a point, and having their height be static instead of dynamic, as ATM I don't notice it on my ridiculously small netbook screen.

I saw the screenshots of the other OP's, and they do seem a bit large for their purpose. I think the best fix would be to have them, like I said, stretch to a point (whether that be with pure CSS or PHP or what), and have the height be static and work with the pseudo-dynamic width. They look a little big and with how simplistic they are the size isn't necessary... but that may well be my small screen size (1024x600). I thought to ask so as to suggest a less abrupt and more all-pleasing solution than the other OP's to the thing as IMO leaving it be isn't the best answer for everyone.

I would not be opposed to this. While I can understand the staff's position with how they're an integral part of the forum, I do believe that they can be made less obtrusive. I'm not expecting them roll something out immediately, or even in the near future(tbh its not that big of a deal to me) but it'd be nice if they could play with some things and work it out.

EDIT: Just an idea, what if they worked like the header image on Fundamental? I don't know how possible that would be, but as you scroll up on this theme the header seems to expand. Or maybe I'm just imagining things :p

You mean the forum splashes right? I agree that the more responsive they are the better. Responsiveness is what you're looking for here, which takes a bit of extra effort on the Mod's behalf (since Media Queries aren't common knowledge among web development hobbyists so to speak). That said I'd like to see us make strides to have more responsive splashes.

Correct me if I'm off point here.

I'm on a 16:9 768p screen ATM and IMO the splashes are a bit larger than optimal.

I guess that's what I'm going for, yes. They're nice splashes, sure, but they just need their drawers adjusted. They're busting a sag.

Are we talking about those block headers that suddenly appeared in the last few months? Above the topics but below the style's header (i.e. Sky High has Brendan and Rayquaza; not talking about this header) where the "News" announcements sometimes pop up?

On some forums, those middle "headers" are of perfect size and look fine. Some boards, though, they are stretched to no ends. I'm working on a 16:9 1680x1050P screen, but my laptop has an even higher resolution. Both screens do the same thing for those same boards.

If we can get those boards to work properly and adapt the middle "headers" to style width, that'd be nice.

If that is, indeed, what we're talking about..?

Yeah for reference we call these Forum Splashes, which is a little idea I came up with last year or a little before that. The intention was certainly to extend to what you see now but I honestly see how this can create issues for the most common screen height of ~800px.

So I want to ask you guys: in particular what splashes are too large (in which sections)? And are you having massive problems on specific styles?

Letting us know when you're experiencing problems with any forum splash or style is important and totally recommended. That way we can make strides to fixing the issues and giving users a better experience. I will certainly look into our options of how we can make these forum splashes become more accessible for users with smaller resolutions and see how we as staff can rectify any problems. Again though the most important matter in ensuring that these splashes don't cause you issues is your feedback! So definitely let us know if you're having problems and we'll do what we can :]

Psst. Your resolution is 16:10. Just wanted to let you know. :P

I think it's about time GC got a splash that's styled in the manner of PC 2.0. At the moment the image gets crammed into the browser tighter than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a lunchbox that doesn't fit, at least on mobile. Something dynamic with the pastel colours like you see in other sections would be nice, but I wouldn't know how to go about doing one of those like that. I'm having a hard enough time with CSS already, and now there's all this XSS stuff to learn and I have to clean up and standardize my code aaaah

Umm since I'd rather not waste time with a PM or it's own thread I'd also like to let you guys know that I can't scroll to read notifications on Garchompin' on mobile. Sorry :/

Going through the list the ones I've found to be a bit too large or at least give off the appearance of being too large are:
    -Pokemon X & Y
    -Battling & Team Building
    -Challenges
-Rom Hacking Hub(not vertically, but it broke the forum horizontally on the theme I'm using and others I tested)
    -Roleplay Lounge
    -Culture and Media
    -Anime and Manga
    -General Chat

But I'm generally bad seeing how nicely things stack up visually so don't really take my word for it, just some ideas. Apart from that sections like GC, Challenges, Pokemon TCG, Pokemon Clubs and a few others could use some nicer looking splashes.

    Pokemon TCG

I'm in the process of reworking this one, slowly. I'm trying to balance between it being a one-stop place for information and simultaneously not having it suffer from information overload.

Granted, pretty is not my forte, as that requires some patience for graphic design.

Uhm, speaking of these, I'm having problems seeing them correctly. I'm using Firefox and Let's Fly Together and Art and Design's forum splash looks like this...

    Spoiler:

...And I'm pretty sure that's not supposed to happen. I switched to Fundamental and it worked fine. If this post doesn't belong here, oops :c

Fixed this issue. Let us know if you see any other oddities!

On the theme "Atop Mt Coronet" many of the splashes seem to be bugged in the very same manner. I tested it on like 5 other themes and they all seemed to work properly, so its likely just an issue with these particular theme. Which I've only been using because I was too lazy to change it lol.
