I'm going to answer this question as best as I can without sounding like a favoritist or a hater.

To put it bluntly, Ash is dumb as bricks, but a very skilled Trainer.

  • I think he is so stupid his Name is Ash Ketchum(ketchup) but he barly even gets more than 30 pokemon (Tauros as 1) And he releases more Pokemon than what he has.

Ash: Pokemon falls of cliff jumps off to save them

Me: Pokemon falls off cliff "Return"

Ash is not Smart. Just say Starly was falling off a cliff he would jump down to get it and about 1 millimetre from the ground/ocean/whatever/spikes/lava/anything dangerous he would remember that starly is flying type and can FLY!!! But he wouldn't jump down if it was a field full of pillows(extra cushing) or to save his own mum

  • His mom was kinda stupid too. >_> Heh, here's an example of Ass Ketchup.

Ass: Oh, no! I can't beat Blaine's Rhydon! Oh, I have an idea! Let's use Thunderbolt on his horn even though it gets an ability that makes electric attacks hit the horn anyway! That'll totally work!
    *Haxachu uses Thunderbolt*
    *Rhydon dies*
Ass: Oh, wow! I'm going to ignore the steroids I gave Haxachu in the Brock episode and say it was all my idea! :D

  • Ash is a really interesting character. He may act stupid once in a while, but that doesn't mean he is stupid. He comes up with good strategies when fighting. Ash is always using the stuff he learned from contests to improve his battle tactics. Being a little dumb and naive is part of a good anime character ex(Ichigo from Bleach, Naruto from Naruto, Luffy from One Piece). I have no idea why would people get aggravated when he does something dumb, dumb=funny last time I check

  • It's been 10 seasons of dumb stuff he's done. It was pretty funny in the first couple, but now it's not even funny anymore. >_>

Excluding not recognising Team Rocket (he represses them from his memory lol) and "forgetting" Normal type attacks don't affect Ghost types once (I suppose he thought it wouldn't matter like Electric/Ground XD), is there anything else he does that is actually dumb?

  • Not having some of his Pokemon evolve, etc. Meh, if the creators of the show let him have evolved Pokemon more often, they'd at least have an excuse for his god moddishness. Oh, and he tied against a Magikarp once.

XD OK. That was a DP episode, I thought you didn't watch any? Anyway, since AG his Pokemon have evolved more, at least. In Battle Frontier his whole team were fully evolved except Pikachu and Corphish and hopefully his whole DP team will become fully evolved (except Pikachu, obviously). But I don't think that makes him stupid. I think its supposed to be that there's something "special" about Ash, so that's why his non-evolved Pokemon can win? Maybe because he's supposed to be more caring towards his Pokemon than other trainers are. That's something like what one of the Frontier Brains said, Anabel, I think

  • I stopped watching DP episodes at a certain point. I watch it sometimes when there's nothing on, but barely any. =\

That's another way the anime is different from the games, lol. Caring about your Pokemon makes them more powerful than doing any kind of training. Except in the Brock episode, which I mentioned earlier, when he pretty much just gave Pikachu steroids at the last minute.

Ash is okay but the problem about him is that he sees all the Legendies but doesn't try to catch them it's not even that he just doesn't get it any effort. Ash could at least throw a pokeball at one and see what's happens maybe he'll get lucky.

still others think his intelligence level depends on how the writers want him to be portrayed in any given episode.
    I'd go for that...

Otherwise, Ash simply fills the role of the young, naive, male protagonist. If you're familiar with the archetypical protagonist type, this should be self-explanatory enough.

In the anime, the legendaries protect the world. If Ash just went around "catching them all," then the world would be doomed, and it'd be the most retarded thing he's ever done.

I didn't say you had to catch them but a least try to.

  • If legendaries control the world why does Brandon have the three regis
and the factory dude had Articuno.

    *OFF TOPIC*
in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew the Regi's attacked Ash so there must be more than one off each Regi at least and there are more Lugia's.

Ash has never really been dump. He just started off naive and inexperinced in a lot of things, not knowing stuff but what do you expect when he was only 10 years old when the show started.

What did you expect a 10 year old to know everything? As the show has gone on Ash has aged and matured. He's not prefect and he still makes mistakes from time to time, but considering he's a teenager that's all part of growing up.

While he might still be clueless about girls he's far from stupid these days.

Having prof.oak as his grandfather gave him a leg up since he has such a knowlageable person to learn from.

Ash didn't pick up on certiant things when he was yonger becuse his dad wasn't around to teach him.
