  • He doesn't have to catch all the legends, he doesn't want to be an omnipotent trainer or something like that. He just wants to catch what HE wants to catch. But in other words he is smart he makes good decisions, battle tactics etc.

    "Is Ash Smart?"

The answer to that depends on who you ask. Some people think he's a clueless nut who wins battles on luck and hAx all the time, others think he's become a reasonably competent trainer prone to making rookie mistakes, still others think his intelligence level depends on how the writers want him to be portrayed in any given episode.

As for the whole legendaries thing, you realize they're not SUPPOSED to be captured in the anime, right? Did you watch any of the movies? Most, if not all, of the legendaries have some sort of importance in maintaining balance in the world, whether it's in nature or the fabric of time and space. There would be no planet left if you went around capturing all of them, and that's assuming you even can in an actual Pokemon battle.

  • My younger brother says that "Ash is as stupid as a motorcycle" but that's an inside joke that would require over a fanfic to explain.

I'd say that he was an idiot at times, especially when he did things like pull out Charmeleon against Paras in "The Problem w/Paras" back in the start of things as he was aiming to lose in that episode to help Cassandra evolve her Paras. So pulling out a fire Pokemon when he was supposed to lose to help a friend was a little bit dumb. And he did make PLENTY such mistakes too, ie. pitching Squirtle against grass Pokemon when he could have picked fire, etc but as time goes by, he seems to be getting better. Or I've just become amused by it.

What does make him smart is that he is like what, 10 years old (and miraculously doesn't age) and he manages to survive traveling around on his own w/a few of his friends. I cannot imagine many of that age I know making it alive for more than a week so there is a certain amount of maturity there.

HOWEVER, the moment I think of Team Rocket's numerous uber-lame disguises, Ash doesn't appear to be the brightest crayon in the box.

So he's not brilliant or anything if you ask me, but his heart is in the right place and that's what counts at the end of the day.

He IS omnipotent. His Pikachu has killed all but f***ing Arceus. Well no, it lost to Magikarp, but whatever. No, I don't think Ash is smart, I think he has Down's Syndrome. -_- He acts like such an idiot, and happens to win by luck almost every time, and loses/ties about twice every season.

Edit: Actually, he tied against Magikarp, but whatever.

Edit of an Edit: Actually Galla, with that 10 year old thing, then Dora the Explorer should be a genius. She's a 6 year old girl going around with a talking monkey in the rainforest, without much parental supervision, and she survives without harm.

  • Personally, I see Ash being sort of smart.

We all know how dumb he was in the early seasons. Remember that grade he got on The Ultimate Test? Even if he sees a pokemon more than once throughout the anime, he's all "What's that? :O" Oh, and let's not forget about all of the girls who had crushes on him. The guy barely notices that he's luckier than Brock. I just find his intelligence to be hilarious at times. Sure, he can be smart for battles sometimes but otherwise he's isn't that bright. If you were to put him in a school, he would most likely fail/come close to failing every subject [which I would be amused to see]. So yeah, I agree that he isn't the "brightest crayon in the box" but oh well; that's Ash for ya. People still love him for his other aspects of his personality.

I think he's intelligent when it comes to strategy in his battles, but common sense? Well that's another thing. :P

He also rushes into to things(which makes sense, he's a kid afterall) and let's his anger get the best of him sometimes.

The only reason he doesn't try to catch the legendaries he encounters is because he always ends up trying to protect them. That's more important to him than having a extremely strong Pokemon. I kinda like that about him.

I think Heracross is a really good Pokemon, it has great stats. Even tho it's not a Legendary it was still a good idea to catch it.

I think Ash is smart, he has some problems tho. He doesn't think over situations before he does them.

  • Ash is damm annoying and even misty is smarter then him and even simple basic pokemon tactic's, his prone to forget like normal attacks don't affect ghost pokemon, when he was battling 1 of the elite four.

He's an idiot mentally. He acts like an idiot.

But he has some great battle tactics ect, so, yeah, he's an idiotic but smart fictional character... Like a Mister Homer Simpson.

I don't think Ash is a realistic person. He's like Naruto in that manga.

Ash is an idiot (I like him, but he is^^) and he's not very mature (though he's gotten more so through the seasons)...(which is crazy, since he doesn't age) but he can be a genius on the battlefield, and Oak and everybody thinks Ash has something great inside him and so on and so forth... but hello? It's not realistic to be so foolish and so genius at the same time... or is it?
Hm. After all, wasn't Einstein a bit of a lunatic?
