Is it better to leave a laptop on or off at night?

I think I'm a really major offender about this whole not-shutting-down cases as I tend to do overnight downloads aka. not shutting down my laptop at all for at maximum 2 days just to download stuff. You'd be surprised at how fast the speed is over here, you won't get what you want when everyone else is using the internet as well...

But I normally place some sort of cooling fan underneath my laptop to prevent it from overheating. I've only done this a few times anyway. But I rarely put my laptop in sleep mode, I'll always shut it down whenever it's not in use, or hibernate it whenever I'm planning to use it after some time.

Still, this thing is already three years old and now in need of a new battery... *sigh*

Yup. As previously said in this topic, it's recommended to turn it off since the battery could be affected. Waiting a few seconds while it turns off can make your computer work better, so I think it's worth the wait.

I couldn't leave a laptop on overnight, due to the fact I'd be wasting electricity this way. Also, if I had to leave it on for some reason, I'd make sure that it wasn't connected to the internet.

I leave my laptop on all day and night. It never gets shut off unless in need of a restart for updates/ect but then again I have a high end gaming laptop and plenty of tech that keeps it from ever overheating plus I don't care about wasting electricity too much.

I keep my laptop on for weeks at a time, only restarting once every 3-4 days. I never shut down unless I have to carry it somewhere.
I used to do that on my old laptop too and it is till running well after 6 years of use.

I usually put my laptop in sleep mode when I go to bed and when I'm not using it. It does sap the battery life away so I'm looking into using Hibernate instead.

Contrary to a lot of folk here, instead of putting my laptop in sleep mode I instead put it in Hibernation mode. Is this bad to be doing a lot? I have to do it because the battery in my laptop has degraded so much that I've heard it wake up in the middle of the night whilst in sleep mode and then just die.

Hibernation saves an image of the laptop to the hard disk as far as I know, though I haven't really gone exploring the particulars of it too much, at least not in recent times.
